R320 R250 Discovery Miles 2 500 Save R70 (22%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

These `interventions’ are spurred by what in South Africa today is a buzz-phrase: social cohesion. The term, or concept, is bandied about with little reflection by leaders or spokespeople in politics, business, labour, education, sport, entertainment and the media. Yet, who would not wish to live in a socially cohesive society? How, then, do we apply the ideal in the daily round when diversity of language, religion, culture, race and the economy too often supersedes our commitment to a common citizenry? How do we live together rather than live apart? Such questions provoke the purpose of these interventions. The interventions – essays, which are short, incisive, at times provocative – tackle issues that are pertinent to both living together and living apart: equality/inequality, public pronouncement, xenophobia, safety, chieftaincy in modernity, gender-based abuse, healing, the law, education, identity, sport, new `national’ projects, the role of the arts, South Africa in the world. In focusing on such issues, the essays point towards the making of a future, in which a critical citizenry is key to a healthy society. Contributors include leading academics and public figures in South Africa today: Christopher Ballantine, Ahmed Bawa, Michael Chapman, Jacob Dlamini, Jackie Dugard, Kira Erwin, Nicole Fritz, Michael Gardiner, Gerhard Maré, Monique Marks, Rajend Mesthrie, Bonita Meyersfeld, Leigh-Ann Naidoo, Njabulo S. Ndebele, Kathryn Pillay, Faye Reagon, Brenda Schmahmann, Himla Soodyall, David Spurrett and Thuto Thipe.

Policing in Africa is often portrayed as being practised by incompetent and corrupt apologists for governing regimes. Professional policing, on the other hand, is the opposite of populist, incompetent, corrupt and regime-partisan policing. A professional police agency is dependent on solid competence acquired through learning interventions aimed at the type of police service delivery that will suit a democratic society and an adherence to human rights principles. Policing in Africa: Towards an African Epistemology aims to provide some knowledge towards the achievement of exactly that type of police service delivery.

In this book the authors present a dialectic of African preference and northern epistemology, and aim for synthesis between the two. The foundational epistemological discourses typical of African continental thinking on matters of community importance are the focal point. The book emphasises the strengthening of policing epistemology through research and people development. This, in turn, aims to bolster policing practices such as the prevention of crime through the ubiquitous quest for community partnerships, peace, conflict resolution and effective resolving of committed crimes.

Policing in Africa: Towards an African Epistemology is designed for studying and reflection. Learning outcomes guide, new terms enlighten, and critical thinking activities and case studies support reflection. The authors express the wish that this book will be of value to students, facilitators of learning, policy makers, oversight agencies, civil society organisations, libraries and communities in the broadest definition possible.

The role of a financial manager is to maintain a firm's liquidity and solvency by providing the cash flows necessary to satisfy its obligations and acquiring and financing the current and fixed assets needed to achieve its goals. However, the management of a firm's assets is not exclusively in the hands of a financial manager. Other functional departments, especially purchasing and marketing, play a significant role.

Finance For Non-Financial Managers thus provides an understanding of the principles of financial management as required to contribute favourably to the long-term success of a firm. Finance for non-financial managers explains the financial goals of a firm and illustrates how the principles of finance should be applied in creating wealth as opposed to simply maximising profit. With its ideal for anyone who has little or no prior knowledge of accounting or financial management.

In particular, Finance For Non-Financial Managers deals with the following:

  • the long-term goal of creating value and the short-term goals of profitability and liquidity;
  • analysing and interpreting financial statements;
  • using a financial calculator;
  • managing cash flow (liquidity), accounts receivable and inventory (stock).

Finance For Non-Financial Managers is aimed at managers involved in marketing, human resources, information technology and supply chain management, and for professionals such as engineers, architects, attorneys and medical professionals in private practice.

R515 R457 Discovery Miles 4 570 Save R58 (11%) Ships in 7 - 10 working days

In our typically fast-paced life in the 21st century it is not uncommon for people to feel a loss of direction, purpose and meaning. It would seem that deeper and more fundamental questions about our existence and the significance of our efforts and busy lives are seldom asked and contemplated. In many areas and at different levels there also appears to be a vacuum in inspirational leadership. Instead of waiting and hoping for others to rise to the challenges of our time, however, we can reflect on our own leadership and commit to grow as inspirational leaders ourselves. How well do we lead our own lives, our own families? How do we ensure that our own flame of inspiration remains strong? Do we have the ability to inspire others? Leadership thoughts attempts to open up perspectives, stimulate thinking and inspire attitudes and behaviour that would help to unlock the best in us - especially in the context of the workplace and the challenges that we face as a nation. It will be appreciated by students of life in general, by those who regard themselves as experienced but not complete leaders, as well as aspirant leaders who are eager to lay the right foundations for their leadership challenges in future.

Gerhard Hammerschmid, Steven Van De Walle, Rhys Andrews, Philippe Bezes
R1,202 Discovery Miles 12 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on a survey of more than 6,700 top civil servants in 17 European countries, this book explores the impacts of New Public Management (NPM)-style reforms in Europe from a uniquely comparative perspective. It examines and analyses empirical findings regarding the dynamics, major trends and tools of administrative reforms, with special focus on the diversity of top executives' perceptions about the effects of those reforms. Resulting from research funded by the European Commission, this book is an ambitious, comprehensive portrait of public administration in the central European bureaucracies after more than three decades of NPM reforms and in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. The chapters present extensive data on single countries but invaluably take a comparative approach, presenting a broad, explorational perspective. Public Administration Reforms in Europe is an indispensable resource for researchers, practitioners and students in a variety of social science areas, especially public administration, public policy and public management. Vertebrate Cranial Placodes: Gerhard Schlosser Vertebrate Cranial Placodes
Gerhard Schlosser
R2,451 Discovery Miles 24 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most of the cranial sense organs of vertebrates arise from embryonic structures known as cranial placodes. Such placodes also give rise to sensory neurons that transmit information to the brain as well as to many neurosecretory cells. This book focuses on the development of sensory and neurosecretory cell types from cranial placodes by introducing the vertebrate head with its sense organs and neurosecretory organs and providing an overview of the various cranial placodes and their derivatives, including evidence of common embryonic primordia. Schlosser discusses how these primordia are established in the early embryo and how individual placodes develop. The latter chapters explain how various placodally derived sensory and neurosecretory cell types differentiate into discrete structures.

The Practice of Psychotherapy - Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition): C. G. Jung The Practice of Psychotherapy - Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition)
C. G. Jung; Edited by Gerhard Adler; Translated by R.F.C Hull
R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Practice of Psychotherapy brings together Jung's essays on general questions of analytic therapy and dream analysis. It also contains his profoundly interesting parallel between the transference phenomena and alchemical processes.
The transference is illustrated and interpreted by means of a set of symbolic pictures, and the bond between psychotherapist and patient is shown to be a function of the kinship libido. Far from being pathological in its effects, kinship libido has an essential role to play in the work of individuation and in establishing an organic society based on the psychic connection of its members with one another and with their own roots.

Iraq - Threat and Response (Hardcover): Gerhard Beestermoller, David Little Iraq - Threat and Response (Hardcover)
Gerhard Beestermoller, David Little
R567 Discovery Miles 5 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The publication of this collection of essays on the current crisis concerning Iraq will not be welcomed by the United States government. Although the authors - a group of German and American scholars, who are moral theologicans, policy analysts, political scientists, and a Middle East historian - write from divergent backgrounds and perspectives, all finally concur, sometimes for different reasons, in rejecting the arguments of the Bush administration in favor of unilateral U.S. military action against Iraq. These essays are uniformly free of the intemperate language and careless argumentation that characterizes some of the opposition to American policy inside and outside the United States, and is therefore easy to dismiss. Whether the authors address either the threat Saddam Hussein represents to his reagon and the world or the prospects for alternative strategies, the reasoning is generally wellinformed, sensitive to complexity, and attentive to detail. The book will help to confirm and strengthen the growing 'thoughful opposition' in the United States and abroad to the Bush policies, and as such deserves to be taken very seriously.

Working Mothers in Europe - A Comparison of Policies and Practices (Hardcover): Ute Gerhard, Trudie Knijn, Anja Weckwert Working Mothers in Europe - A Comparison of Policies and Practices (Hardcover)
Ute Gerhard, Trudie Knijn, Anja Weckwert
R2,904 Discovery Miles 29 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Working Mothers in Europe combines comparative perspectives on social policies with analyses of mothers' practices as evidenced in macro data and as explored in country based case studies. Social policy research has emphasised the impact of particular welfare systems and their policies on women's integration into the labour market and the organisation of care and work. However, the authors argue that policies are not the only factor, and, hitherto, we have very little knowledge of the precise interactions between social policies and social practices of individuals and families. In order to accurately grasp the cross-country variation of mothers' work and care arrangements in Europe, this book assembles a comparative approach towards welfare systems and social policies with an analysis of mothers' social practices in several European countries. Exploring the ways in which working mothers manage to combine care responsibilities and paid work on the basis of diverse public and private resources, this book will be invaluable to academics, researchers and students interested in the social sciences. More generally, the book will greatly appeal to those with an interest in women's employment, gender relations and the needs of children as matters that are tackled in the interaction between social policy and individuals.

The Evolutionary Analysis of Economic Policy (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Pavel Pelikan, Gerhard Wegner The Evolutionary Analysis of Economic Policy (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Pavel Pelikan, Gerhard Wegner
R3,373 Discovery Miles 33 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This important book analyses evolutionary approaches to economic policy. Its main purpose is to explore the policy implications of evolutionary economics, in particular of approaches inspired on the one hand by Schumpeter and revived by Nelson and Winter which deal with industrial evolution under constant institutions and, on the other hand, of approaches inspired by Hayek and North, which analyse the ways in which institutions themselves evolve. Hitherto evolutionary economists have paid little attention to policy issues, and the relatively few policy implications that they have produced are divergent. Whereas the Neo-Schumpeterian approach has often been used to support political interventions, the Hayekian viewpoint holds that economic policy detracts from economic performance. More systematic evolutionary analysis of economic policy is required if these one-sided findings are to be transcended. Furthermore, such analysis can be expected to develop a coherent theory of economic policy which will plug the gaps and rectify the errors (such as approval of socialist planning and Japanese industrial policies) of both neoclassical and alternative approaches to policy. Evolutionary economists and policy analysts will find this book of great interest, as will economists and students of economics who are interested in enlarging their views with excursions outside the standard curriculum.

Gerhard Richter: 100 Abstract Pictures: Gerhard Richter Gerhard Richter: 100 Abstract Pictures
Gerhard Richter
R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With a career spanning more than sixty years, the renowned painter Gerhard Richter is one of the greatest artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This book celebrates the artist’s continued dedication to experimentation and innovation. The Abstract Pictures were created when Richter, a few years ago, poured colored enamel paints onto a glass plate and allowed them to flow into one another in order to take shapes. He then captured these ephemeral moments with his camera and selected 100 of these “pictures” for inclusion in the book alongside equally abstract texts formed by randomly generated letter combinations. An artwork of its own, this intimate volume inspires both close looking and a beautiful interpretation of abstraction.

Urban Refugees - Challenges in Protection, Services and Policy (Paperback): Koichi Koizumi, Gerhard Hoffstaedter Urban Refugees - Challenges in Protection, Services and Policy (Paperback)
Koichi Koizumi, Gerhard Hoffstaedter
R1,530 Discovery Miles 15 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Urban refugees now account for over half the total number of refugees worldwide. Yet to date, far more research has been done on refugees living in camps and settlements set up expressly for them. This book provides crucial insights into the worldwide phenomenon of refugee flows into urban settings, repercussions for those seeking protection, and the agencies and organizations tasked to assist them. It provides a comparative exploration of refugees and asylum seekers in nine urban areas in Africa, Asia and Europe to examine issues such as status recognition, international and national actors, housing, education and integration. The book explores the relationship between refugee policies of international organisations and national governments and on the ground realities and demonstrates both the diverse of circumstances in which refugees live, and their struggle for recognition, protection and livelihoods.

Morgan Jones, ew Butler, Gerhard Plenert
R1,114 Discovery Miles 11 140 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

When trying to embed changes or new mindsets and behaviors, organizations tend to focus on following a particular methodology rather than clearly defining the underlying behaviors that will deliver the sustainable behavioral change and align the thought processes that drive the behaviors-whether their intent is to continuously improve safety or overall risk management or achieve a sustainable growth and improvement trajectory. The key role of leadership teams is not to deliver results. It is to inspire and own the organizational culture that delivers the expected results. If culture is owned by HR, it is doomed to be another thing leaders have to do on top of their day job. Business leadership teams must oversee defining and managing organizational culture and have HR coach the capability of leaders to cast the right leadership shadow by role modeling the right behaviors, rewarding the right behaviors in their teams, and providing clarity on expectations around behaviors for all leaders and employees. The most challenging part of any performance-improvement implementation is the identification of key behavioral indicators (KBIs). The purpose of this book is to assist with that challenge and make "behaviors" easier to understand and identify. The book defines and describes the importance of focusing on the behaviors necessary for sustainable change rather than focusing on the tools and methodology behind change management. It discusses multiple lenses of change including Lean, Six Sigma, Agile, Risk, and Customer Experience and also addresses the weaknesses of complying solely with the methodology and tools. It proposes a behavioral framework to suit each particular lens. This book begins with reasons most continuous improvement programs fail to deliver the expected results. More importantly, it discusses embedding the newly described mindsets and capabilities into the business. The book concludes by providing leaders a roadmap and a coaching framework for how to align and embed their new behavioral framework at all levels, starting from the front-line worker up to the CEO. Essentially, this book leads the reader through the process of understanding the concept of defining behaviors and the difference between them and tools/methodology. It introduces KBIs for leaders to define and drive the desired behaviors at all levels. This will increase the probability of sustainability for the improvement initiative by focusing on and maturing the behaviors these initiatives are trying to drive.

Bodily Expression in Electronic Music - Perspectives on Reclaiming Performativity (Hardcover): Deniz Peters, Gerhard Eckel,... Bodily Expression in Electronic Music - Perspectives on Reclaiming Performativity (Hardcover)
Deniz Peters, Gerhard Eckel, Andreas Dorschel
R4,444 Discovery Miles 44 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book, scholars and artists explore the relation between electronic music and bodily expression from perspectives including aesthetics, philosophy of mind, phenomenology, dance and interactive performance arts, sociology, computer music and sonic arts, and music theory, transgressing disciplinary boundaries and established beliefs. The historic decoupling of action and sound generation might be seen to have distorted or even effaced the expressive body, with the retention of performance qualities via recoupling not equally retaining bodily expressivity. When, where, and what is the body expressed in electronic music then? The authors of this book reveal composers, performers, improvisers and listeners bodies, as well as the works and technologies figurative bodies as a rich source of expressive articulation. Bringing together humanities scholarship and musical arts contingent upon new media, the contributors offer inspiring thought and critical reflection for all those seriously engaged with the aesthetics of electronic music, interactive performance, and the body 's role in aesthetic experience and expression. Performativity is not only seen as being reclaimed in live electronic music, interactive arts, and installations; it is also exposed as embodied in the music and the listeners themselves.

Peter Graaf, Ruth A Holt, Christof Loose, Gerhard Zarbock
R1,312 Discovery Miles 13 120 In Stock

This book presents the first English language guide to adapting schema therapy (ST) for children and adolescents. Written by the developers of the approach, it presents a wide range of innovative child- and parent-specific techniques, with detailed guidance on how to apply them across five key developmental stages from infancy to young adulthood. Case studies bring the material to life, and the focus extends beyond the core therapeutic relationship to what the authors call 'schema coaching' - encouraging parents and carers to consider how their own entrenched ways of thinking, behaving and responding may contribute to or exacerbate a young person's issues and needs. In adult schema therapy, therapists differentiate between child modes, parental models, coping modes and the Healthy Adult mode. For young people, the authors focus exclusively on the child modes and in place of the Healthy Adult introduce a healthy Wise Child mode (sometimes called "Clever Sally" or "Clever Sam"). Care is taken not to label as 'maladaptive' modes which may still be in the normal range of behaviour for a child's specific developmental phase. With detailed guidance on how to enact age-appropriate schema dialogues, and imaginative use of play to reinforce or replace imagery rescripting, Schema Therapy for Children and Adolescents allows therapists to help young people put difficult events behind them and choose new, healthier ways forward. The first book to adapt schema therapy for children and adolescents - presents the ST-CA model and provides a clear, practical guide to clinical implementation Approaches schemas and modes from a perspective of developmental stages, with specific guidance and creative ideas for engaging young people in each age group Integrates the child's environment, involving parents and other carers in children's schema therapy by exploring their own behavioral patterns and schema modes Written by experienced practitioners who are the pioneers of theory, research and practice on schema therapy and interventions for children and young people

R3,028 Discovery Miles 30 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since 1992 the EU has incorporated a concept previously exclusive to states: citizenship. In embracing supranational citizenship the EU entered terra incognita, creating a concept resembling, but essentially different to traditional citizenship. This book provides an in-depth historical, political and constitutional analysis of the first 25 years of EU citizenship, and considers how it could develop over the next 25 years. Bringing together scholars from the fields of law, political science and history, this book takes a multidisciplinary approach to EU citizenship. It examines the history and development of EU citizenship, the roles of institutional and political actors, and the dynamics which it created in the post-Maastricht accession process, providing readers with a unique multifaceted examination of the topic. Exploring new insights into the nature and importance of EU citizenship, this book shows that after a quarter of a century EU citizenship has lost none of it's game-changing potential, and remains one of the most important features of EU law. Students of European law and politics and international relations will find this concise book an invaluable tool, with interesting and original insights into the present status of a key aspect of EU law. Its multidisciplinary approach will also help professionals working in fields relating to the subject. Contributors include: A.G. Harryvan, G. Hoogers, J. Langer, S. Neuman Stanivukovic, T. Nowak, R.
