In a time of unprecedented social and economic crisis, this book represents a challenge to the orthodoxy that shapes our vision of educational purpose. It argues that now, more than ever, there is a moral imperative for educators to assume responsibility for helping to bring about a culture of peace and non-violence in both our nation and throughout the world as a whole. Shapiro has situated his vision of education in a broader quest for social and moral change. His framework is one rooted in the critical pedagogic tradition which sees education's primary purpose as nurturing democratic values, civic involvement, and a commitment to a more just and compassionate culture.
Through the lens of Turbulence Theory, this volume offers students and scholars an innovative toolkit for understanding the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on teachers, families, and students. Bringing together cases from early childhood and special education written by parents and educators, author Susan H. Shapiro leverages Turbulence Theory as a framework to help readers evaluate the level of turbulence during each scenario and what methods, if any, might help mitigate or escalate the situation. With more than 20 insightful case-based examples and discussion questions, this book explores what lessons and strategies we can bring into future crises-and how we move forward in an ever-evolving educational landscape.

Here is an invaluable resource to help professionals understand the broad range of issues and challenges that adolescents face as they grapple with their sexuality. This highly informative volume addresses the most compelling issues of adolescent sexuality. Sexual orientation, acquaintance rape, new social roles, and sexually transmitted diseases are among the numerous topics that social workers confront daily in helping adolescents define and seek solutions to their sex-related concerns. Adolescent Sexuality highlights the importance of innovative approaches and client empowerment in prevention and treatment programs for youth, particularly in this era of declining federal support. This timely volume reveals the reluctance of adolescents to confide in their families; therefore, experts offer valuable suggestions for social workers to strengthen and use community resources--the church, family planning agencies, schools, and support groups--to supplement the efforts of many families.

The Schwarz function originates in classical complex analysis and potential theory. In this text, the author presents the advantages of the function, favouring a mode of treatment which unites the subject with modern theory of distributions and partial differential equations - thus bridging the gap between two-dimensional analysts. The author examines the Schwarz function and its relationship to recent investigations regarding inverse problems of Newtonian gravitation, free boundaries, Hele-Shaw flows and the propagation of singularities for holomorphic partial differential equations.
The study of composition operators links some of the most basic questions you can ask about linear operators with beautiful classical results from analytic-function theory. The process invests old theorems with new mean ings, and bestows upon functional analysis an intriguing class of concrete linear operators. Best of all, the subject can be appreciated by anyone with an interest in function theory or functional analysis, and a background roughly equivalent to the following twelve chapters of Rudin's textbook Real and Complex Analysis Rdn '87]: Chapters 1-7 (measure and integra tion, LP spaces, basic Hilbert and Banach space theory), and 10-14 (basic function theory through the Riemann Mapping Theorem). In this book I introduce the reader to both the theory of composition operators, and the classical results that form its infrastructure. I develop the subject in a way that emphasizes its geometric content, staying as much as possible within the prerequisites set out in the twelve fundamental chapters of Rudin's book. Although much of the material on operators is quite recent, this book is not intended to be an exhaustive survey. It is, quite simply, an invitation to join in the fun. The story goes something like this."
This book introduces functional analysis to undergraduate mathematics students who possess a basic background in analysis and linear algebra. By studying how the Volterra operator acts on vector spaces of continuous functions, its readers will sharpen their skills, reinterpret what they already know, and learn fundamental Banach-space techniques--all in the pursuit of two celebrated results: the Titchmarsh Convolution Theorem and the Volterra Invariant Subspace Theorem. Exercises throughout the text enhance the material and facilitate interactive study.
This text provides an introduction to some of the best-known fixed-point theorems, with an emphasis on their interactions with topics in analysis. The level of exposition increases gradually throughout the book, building from a basic requirement of undergraduate proficiency to graduate-level sophistication. Appendices provide an introduction to (or refresher on) some of the prerequisite material and exercises are integrated into the text, contributing to the volume's ability to be used as a self-contained text. Readers will find the presentation especially useful for independent study or as a supplement to a graduate course in fixed-point theory. The material is split into four parts: the first introduces the Banach Contraction-Mapping Principle and the Brouwer Fixed-Point Theorem, along with a selection of interesting applications; the second focuses on Brouwer's theorem and its application to John Nash's work; the third applies Brouwer's theorem to spaces of infinite dimension; and the fourth rests on the work of Markov, Kakutani, and Ryll-Nardzewski surrounding fixed points for families of affine maps.
