The Romance of Crossing Borders - Studying and Volunteering Abroad (Hardcover): Neriko Musha Doerr, Hannah Davis Taieb The Romance of Crossing Borders - Studying and Volunteering Abroad (Hardcover)
Neriko Musha Doerr, Hannah Davis Taieb
R2,846 Discovery Miles 28 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What draws people to study abroad or volunteer in far-off communities? Often the answer is romance - the romance of landscapes, people, languages, the very sense of border-crossing - and longing for liberation, attraction to the unknown, yearning to make a difference. This volume explores the complicated and often fraught desires to study and volunteer abroad. In doing so, the book sheds light on how affect is managed by educators and mobilized by students and volunteers themselves, and how these structures of feeling relate to broader social and economic forces.

Among Hills and Valleys in Western China - Incidents of Missionary Work (Paperback): Hannah Davies, Isabella Bird Among Hills and Valleys in Western China - Incidents of Missionary Work (Paperback)
Hannah Davies, Isabella Bird
R1,029 Discovery Miles 10 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Among Hills and Valleys in Western China, first published in 1901, is a detailed and accurate picture of missionary work undertaken by Miss Hannah Davies, who had made it her life's work to tour the Chinese provinces and preach her Christian belief, as well as encouraging local people to build places of worship and also helping those in poverty. Some of the sketches of life and character are extraordinarily descriptive and beautiful, and a remarkable journey is described in this series of letters and journal extracts. There is, amongst other stories, a fascinating account of an assembly addressed by Bishop Cassells, the first Protestant bishop in western China, and his heartfelt pleas to the people to help build a new church. The book is well illustrated, with an introduction by Isabella Bird (now Mrs J. F. Bishop), the nineteenth-century British missionary, travel writer and historian.

The rise of more commercially-based, global media has significant implicaitons for the child audience. Many are concerned that the public service tradition of children's television is threatened, and that quality and diversity in programming will be impossible to sustain. This book challenges the romantic nostalgia that surrounds contemporary discussions of the subject. Based on an extensive research project, it provides a critical review of the history of children's television in the UK, and a realistic assessment of its future prospects. It looks at how broadcasters have defined the child audience; at the changing nature of children's programming; at the impact of commercial competition and new technologies; and at the role of audience research. The books contributes towards debates about the regulation of children's television; and it offers a case study that will be of more general interest to students and academics in the field.
