This contributed volume collects the scientific results of the DFG
Priority Program 1180 Prediction and Manipulation of the
Interactions between Structures and Processes. The research program
has been conducted during the years 2005 and 2011, whereas the
primary goal was the analysis of the interactions between processes
and structures in modern production facilities. This book presents
the findings of the 20 interdisciplinary subprojects, focusing on
different manufacturing processes such as high performance milling,
tool grinding or metal forming. It contains experimental
investigations as well as mathematical modeling of production
processes and machine interactions. New experimental advancements
and novel simulation approaches are also included.
This contributed volume contains the research results of the
priority programme (PP) 1480 "Modelling, Simulation and
Compensation of Thermal Effects for Complex Machining Processes",
funded by the German Research Society (DFG). The topical focus of
this programme is the simulation-based prediction and compensation
of thermally induced workpiece deviations and subsurface damage
effects. The approach to the topic is genuinely interdisciplinary,
covering all relevant machining operations such as turning,
milling, drilling and grinding. The target audience primarily
comprises research experts and practitioners in the field of
production engineering, but the book may also be beneficial for
graduate students.
More than 125 years ago, a remarkable group of people came together in Cape Town to write down the language and beliefs of the |xam people, a Bushman group that once lived over much of South Africa. The immensely valuable work of Wilhelm Bleek, Lucy Lloyd and their |xam teachers not only preserved a language now no longer spoken, but also provided fascinating insights into |xam cosmology.
First published in 2004, Customs and Beliefs of the |xam reproduces Dorothea Bleek's selection of |xam narratives from the well-known Bleek and Lloyd Collection that was originally published in the journal Bantu Studies during the 1930s. Collated and edited by Jeremy Hollman, the extracts include detailed notes on each of the narratives, as well as Bleek's 'sketch' of |xam grammar.
This substantially revised second edition integrates new scholarship on the Bleek and Lloyd archive, and restores previously omitted material. The introduction to each narrative has been expanded to contextualise it within the archive as a whole and, where relevant, reference it to the Notebook of which it is a part. This includes meticulous cross-referencing with the Bleek and Lloyd Collection catalogue code and the Notebook number and line reference. Each of the texts has also been critically reassessed, with additional editorial notes and commentaries, in particular with respect to the |xam words themselves and the ways in which they have been translated. A synopsis of each narrative is provided in an appendix, with cross references to the Bleek and Lloyd notebooks.
Customs and Beliefs of the |xam, second edition, is an in-depth, detailed and authoritative resource that will be invaluable to scholars, heritage workers and activists alike.
A pioneering collection of new research that explores categories,
constructions, and change in the syntax of the English language.
The volume, with contributions by world-renowned scholars as well
as some emerging scholars in the field, covers a wide variety of
approaches to grammatical categories and categorial change,
constructions and constructional change, and comparative and
typological research. Each of the fourteen chapters, based on the
analysis of authentic data, highlights the wealth and breadth of
the study of English syntax (including morphosyntax), both
theoretically and empirically, from Old English through to the
present day. The result is a body of research which will add
substantially to the current study of the syntax of the English
language, by stimulating further research in the field.
In diesem Open-Access-Buch werden anhand einer
kommunikationsanalytischen Studie unterschiedliche Konzepte der
Ausbildenden und der Auszubildenden für die
Unterrichtsnachbesprechung rekonstruiert.
Kommunikation in Ausbildungskontexten stören.
In a Gotham-like city, a depletion of the Earth's water supply has
led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The privilege
to pee is regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by
charging for one of humanity's most basic needs. From amongst the
people, a hero has risen who will lead them to freedom. A grand,
mischievous love letter to the conventions of musical theatre,
Urinetown depicts a world wracked by ecological disaster, caught in
the throes of corporate greed, and ultimately toppled by the best
of intentions. Praised by critics for reinvigorating the
contemporary musical, Urinetown is one of the most distinctive,
intelligent and jubilant theatrical experiences of the twenty-first
century. It opened at New York City's Fringe Festival, then
transferred to Broadway in September 2001, winning three Tony
Awards, including Best Book of a Musical. Urinetown received its UK
premiere at the St James Theatre, London, in February 2014, later
transferring to the Apollo Theatre in September, in a production
directed by Jamie Lloyd. This edition includes a preface by
playwright David Auburn and extensive introductions by each of the
authors.
Although her body of work is relatively small, Frida Kahlo has
inspired adoration and admiration that few other artists have
attained. This accessible and elegant book offers full page
reproductions of a selection of her works, allowing for a broad
appreciation of Kahlo's use of color, composition, and texture. The
biographical text informs readers of her early career, when a bus
accident left her bedridden and plagued by pain, but also afforded
her the chance to discover herself through painting. It follows her
life, her personal relationships, and her years in America. Eckhard
Hollmann explores the many themes and images of Kahlo's work, from
physical and emotional pain, to Mexican and indigenous folklore, to
the flora and fauna of her beloved home. Never shying away from
expressing her deepest fears and desires, championing the
downtrodden with dignity and passion, Frida Kahlo remains an
inspiration to any artist aiming to be true to herself while
struggling against personal and political limitation.

Society The Third Symposium of the International held in against
Breast Cancer CONTRA CANCRUM MAMMARIUM was Paris, at UNESCO, on
December 9-12, 1985. Scientists and physicians came from allover
the world to attend this meeting. They came from Japan, Brazil, the
United States and the Middle East, from Belgium, Finland, Germany,
Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, Yugoslavia, and from allover France. They all
contributed to the success of the Symposium and my cordial thanks
go to all of them and particularly to the invited speakers and
chairmen of the sessions, to the free-paper contributors, and to
the contributors to the Slide Seminar. Warm personal thanks go to
two friends: to Professor Dan H. Moore from Hahnemann University,
Philadelphia, who was always there to help in many ways, and to
Professor Pietro Gullino from the National Cancer Institute,
Bethesda, and now Torino, Italy, who consistently gave invaluable
advice. Special thanks are also due to those who assisted in the
preparation and organization of the Symposium: the UNESCO officers,
the interpreters, the secretaries and hostesses, the BEBA Company
with the help of Dr.Bernard Martin and Mrs.Jacqueline Bouchy, the
WILD LEITZ-France S.A. for projection facilities and microscope
arrangements for the workshop on mammary cytology which was
successfully conducted by Dr.Colette Marsan. During the four
days, three main topics were discussed: ~ E~idemiology, genetiCS and
oncogenes, related subjects of great actuality.
In the last decade tremendous progress has been made in the
diagnosis and treatment of tumours of the mediastinum. The use of
immunohistochemistry, molecular biology, electron microscopy, CT
and MRI, and a better knowledge of tumour markers, has made for
better diagnosis, often without the need for biopsy, in many cases.
This in turn has clarified the classification and thus the
epidemiology of tumours of the mediastinum, and modern
radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery has led to improved survival
of patients at risk. With over 300 illustrations, mostly in full
colour, and a well-referenced text, this atlas is an invaluable
bench reference for the practising diagnostic pathologist and a
study aid for the trainee, as well as a comprehensive source of
reference for oncologists and surgeons.
Sir Thomas Lewis has become one of the greatest cardiologists of
this century. He was foremost in using the newly invented
electrocardiograph to diagnose heart disease and was a pioneer of
cardiac electro-physiology. This is the first biography of Sir
Thomas Lewis, who became famous, whilst still quite young, for his
outstanding pioneer work in electrocardiography. It recounts the
scientific career of Lewis, together with accounts of his hospital
work and teaching, and his familiy life and hobbies. There are over
100 illustrations including Lewis and his co-workers, and much of
the information about Lewis has been derived from first hand
accounts by his former associates. This biography appeal to
cardiologists and to those physicians, surgeons and research
workers with a special interest in the skin, pain and vascular
disease, as well as clinical physiologists and medical historians.
Accessibility is never a given - it degrades over time and must be
recreated or maintained. Diverse mechanisms govern the
accessibility of information over time, including social trends as
well as processes of loss, preservation, selection, and recovery.
This book develops an interdisciplinary view on the long-term
accessibility of information with the aim of facilitating
systematic planning for the transmission of cultural heritage.
From his earliest pointillist-influenced paintings to this mature
and playful paper cut-outs; from enormous, ebullient murals to
reverent stained glass--Henri Matisse was renowned for his dramatic
use of color and fluid draftsmanship. Thirty of Matisse's most
beloved works are given close attention in this introduction that
explores the varying tensions of the artist's oeuvre--his embrace
of pure color, patterns, and texture; the languorous pleasures of
the Cote d'Azur; primitive displays of human ecstasy; tranquil
scenes of domestic life and soaring monuments to religious life. An
engaging biography takes readers through every phase of Matisse's
career and reveals how his aversion to troubling or depressing
subject matter was in direct opposition to the radical spirit of
his work.

In
