Jacques Huyghe, Peter A. C. Raats, Stephen C. Cowin
R4,226 Discovery Miles 42 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the last decades, new experimental and numerical techniques have taken many advanced features of porous media mechanics down to practical engineering applications. This happened in areas that sometimes were not even suspected to be open to engineering ideas at all. The challenge that often faces engineers in the field of geomechanics, biomechanics, rheology and materials science is the translation of ideas existing in one field to solutions in the other. The purpose of the IUTAM symposium from which this proceedings volume has been compiled was to dive deep into the mechanics of those porous media that involve mechanics and chemistry, mechanics and electromagnetism, mechanics and thermal fluctuations of mechanics and biology. The different sections have purposely not been formed according to field interest, but on the basis of the physics involved.

R5,274 Discovery Miles 52 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Grassland produces feed for livestock, improves soil fertility and structure, protects water resources and may contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon storage and to biodiversity preservation. It simultaneously maintains sustainable economic outputs for farmers and provides ecosystem services. Turf similarly c- siderably contributes to our environment by adding beauty to our surroundings, providing a safe playing surface for sports and recreation. The species diversity present in most grasslands and turfs is a functional div- sity contributing to the previously mentioned agronomic and environmental bene?ts. The species belong to different functional groups and the adequate species com- sition may maximise the agronomic performance through a higher production and a better quality and the environmental bene?ts through symbiotic nitrogen ?xation or sources of pollen and nectar to pollinators. In a given grassland or turf, the genetic diversity available in each variety contributes to this economic and environmental performance, but also to the stability of these performances including the stability of the resistance against pathogens and pests. Natural grasslands share many species with the sown swards. They may be regarded as favourable sites for in situ preservation of genetic diversity as well as valuable sources of diversity for breeding.

Steven Dehaes, Laura Caluwe, Tim Huygh, Anant Joshi
R1,974 Discovery Miles 19 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This title provides clear and readily applicable guidance to corporate board members on the involvement of boards of directors in information technology (IT) governance. Specifically, it demonstrates ways in which board members can execute IT duties effectively. Specific tools such as a roadmap towards digital transformation and a board-level dashboard for digital strategy and oversight are also offered. While organizations are increasingly dependent on IT for the creation of business value, the evidence seems to indicate that boards of directors are not as involved in IT-related strategic decision-making and control as they should be. Research shows that high levels of board-level IT governance, regardless of existing IT needs, will improve organizational performance. This book provides unique insights into the inner workings of a specific board of directors group, with a focus on its IT governance structures and processes.

R6,480 Discovery Miles 64 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Grasslands are among the largest ecosystems in the world and consequently are of great importance to mankind. The genotypes of the species which are the main components of the grasslands have great influence on total outcome and successful utilization of grasslands. Therefore fodder crops and turf swards should be constantly improved to follow modern trends in agriculture production and landscape architecture. The wide range of breeding programs for forage and amenity species, as well as new breeding methods and techniques, is rapidly expanding the boundaries and is making it possible to achieve outstanding breeding results. This book includes papers presented at the 30th EUCARPIA Fodder Crops and Amenity Grasses Section Meeting. The challenging title of the book focuses on breeding of quantitative traits, which directly impact the profitability and sustainability of grasslands and fodder crops production, as well as on multidisciplinary approach in grassland research and utilisation. Included papers offer a unique collection of ideas and breakthroughs in the fields of fodder crops and amenity grasses breeding and genetics, as well as in the creative and innovative application of new tools in practical breeding.

R732 Discovery Miles 7 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"The best book so far to answer the question 'Who discovered America?'...This important, spell-binding report replaces sugar-coated myths about Columbus's invasion of America with indispensable history." --Publishers Weekly

"A thoughtful and challenging consideration of the many voyagers who might have reached the Americas by sea before the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria...Well informed and well written, always provocative if not conclusive, this is revisionist history with a vengeance --and about time, too." --Kirkus Reviews

"Persuasively and emphatically disputes the fact that Columbus actually discovered America...A long-overdue tribute to a score of forgotten and disregarded explorers, adventurers, and sailors. Highly recommended..." --Booklist

Angela Bulloch, Daniel Buren, Pierre Huyghe
R750 Discovery Miles 7 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Parkett # 66 features collaborations with Angela Bulloch (Canada), Daniel Buren (France), and Pierre Huyghe (France). Huyghe reassesses conceptual art concerns by reinterpreting familiar films and themes in popular culture; he also draws on disregarded aspects of everyday life, such as time and alienation, and brings them back into our awareness. Bulloch's participatory sculptures explore the physical and psychological aspects of space by using simple light and sound effects that require the viewer's active participation. In the 1960s, Buren began producing works by using the striped cloth he calls "a seeing tool, " seeking a new way to make art exist outside the museum and gallery spaces that delimited its socializing capacity. Since then he has continued his striped works and remains one of France's most important and cherished living artists.

The first in a new series from Dis Voir, Encounters asks a well-known contemporary artist to decide which subjects he or she wants to discuss in their book. Each artist's book therefore offers a specific experience in terms of content. In accordance with this principle, each artist also selects a person -- due to certain elective affinities -- with whom he or she would like to share this exchange. At the very least, the resulting collaborative volumes serve as an artistic and political laboratory of the present. In this first installment, French artist Pierre Huyghe chooses to encounter Canadian writer Douglas Coupland, author of Generation X, because of the influence Coupland has had on his generation and on Huyghe's own work. Together they discuss the construction of characters, of narrative techniques based on chance, and the political dimension present in Coupland's work -- themes that are also fundamental questions on Huyghe's projects.

Intermediate States - The Anomalist 13 (Paperback): Patrick Huyghe, Dennis Stacy Intermediate States - The Anomalist 13 (Paperback)
Patrick Huyghe, Dennis Stacy
R390 Discovery Miles 3 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Between official facts and public fantasies, there are INTERMEDIATE STATES. In a mix of the comic and the tragic, John Reppion searches for the truth behind an 1845 bridge collapse said to be caused when spectators rushed to see a clown in a tub drawn by six white geese in the river below. Cliff Willett wonders why UFO aliens would traverse deep space to borrow salt, sample our pizza, or offer us pancakes in his delightful examination of alien eating habits. Technology buffs in the afterlife? Mark Macy traces his involvement in our half-century long history of attempts to use technology to communicate directly with the dead - and them with us. Researcher Ulrich Magin tracks down the oft-repeated story of "the first ever sea serpent sighting" by the Assyrian King Sargon nearly three millennia ago and gets to the slimy truth of it all. As protosciences proliferate, David Hricenak makes the case for a new interdisciplinary field of study called bioanomalistics that overlaps with cryptozoology, UFOlogy, and parapsychology. Pennsylvania geologist Sharon Hill tackles the reports of anomalous lights, sounds, weather, and animal behavior that are said to occur before earthquakes, explains why science has been reluctant to accept them as useful precursors, and suggests a possible mechanism to explain such phenomena. Modern science may finally be shedding light on the paranormal. Biologist Dwight Smith and researcher Gary Mangiacopra look at how recent developments in neuroscience may help unravel the physical and physiological mechanisms that lead to out-of-body experiences. With an obvious passion for her subject, Victoria Alexander reviews the extreme ecstatic practices of medieval saints and mystics and finds a close relationship to the modern use of ayahuasca as a visionary tool. Researcher Theo Paijmans makes use of digital newspaper archives to get to the truth about the Black Flash - not the 1990s fictional comic book character from DC Comics but the phantomlike creature that plagued Provincetown in the 1930s and held its inhabitants in an ice-cold grip of fear. Bad sci-fi movies are a dime a dozen, but there's something special about The Flying Saucer. Nick Redfern wonders if there may not be some truth behind the claims of its star/director, who spread the word that the movie would feature footage of a real flying saucer over Alaska. The U.S. Air Force was certainly interested.
