This study aims to show that current thinking about the role of
resources in war, and as a component of military potential in
peacetime, relies on notions derived from historical experience and
changes in the nature of warfare, not least the advent of nuclear
weapons.
Momentous events since September 11, 2001 - the 9/11 terrorist
attacks, Operation Enduring Freedom, the global war on terrorism,
and the recent war in Iraq - have dramatically altered the
political environment of the Muslim world, its attitudes and
relations toward the West, and vice versa. Many dynamic forces
influencing this environment, however, are the products of trends
that have been at work for many decades. This new book examines the
major dynamics driving changes in the religio-political landscape
of the Muslim world - a vast and diverse region that stretches from
Western Africa through the Middle East to the Southern Philippines
and includes Muslim communities and diasporas throughout the world
- as well as the implications of these trends for global security
and Western interests. The world's Muslims encompass a broad
religious universe and differ in their political and social

The authors describe the challenges and opportunities facing Turkey
in the international environment during a time of extraordinary
flux. Special emphasis is given to the strategic and security
issues facing Turkey, including a number of new issues posed by the
terrorist attacks of September 2001 and the subsequent
international response. They conclude by offering some
prognostications regarding the country's future and their
implications on Turkey's western partners.
At the European Union's Helsinki Summit in 1999, Turkey was
declared a candidate for EU membership. This report discusses
Western stakes in the future of a changing Turkey. The authors
offer an agenda for closer strategic co-operation in the
US-Turkish-European triangle.
In Countering the New Terrorism, authors Ian Lesser, Bruce Hoffman,
John Arquilla, David Ronfeldt, and Michele Zanini trace the recent
evolution of international terrorism against civilian and U.S.
military targets, offer judgments on the future directions of
terrorism, and propose strategies for its containment. Can
terrorism be stopped? Contained, yes, stopped, no. This frank
report addresses the role of military forces, especially air and
space power, in national counterterrorism strategy and stresses
that the United States must strive to make terrorism "more
transparent" and address the problem of privatized terror.
This title discusses about how will the world change in the next
century.
