When Susan J. Humphreys moved to the Oakland area in 2000, several
people invited her to attend their churches. One gentleman,
however, was more persistent than others. Humphreys bluntly ended
the conversation by stating that she had simply chosen a different
path to follow. But the exchange continued to nag at Humphreys long
after it was finished. She wondered why she wasn't willing to talk
about her beliefs and eventually realized that it was because she
didn't know what those beliefs really were. For the next six years,
Humphreys clarified her ideas about the world and religion. She
came to understand that she doesn't hold beliefs-she holds
knowledge, or what she calls Gnosis, or "It." Others might call
this enlightenment. When you accompany Humphreys on her spiritual
journey, you will learn about: Ways to search for the self The
driving forces of human behavior Faith, reality, and religion Magic
and the occult Problems facing our world and how to solve them And
much more Begin your own quest for fulfillment today in "Searching
for Enlightenment."
This book provides up-to-date information on globalisation trends
and the transformations taking place in emerging markets. It
discusses key themes of relevance to the auto industry, including
the environmental impact of the car, adaptation of designs for the
needs of emerging markets and the emergence of global
mega-suppliers. These issues are placed in the context of more
general debates about globalisation and current crises in emerging
markets such as Brazil and East Asia.
This book is the first, single-source guide to successful
experiments using the local electrode atom probe (LEAP (R))
microscope. Coverage is both comprehensive and user friendly,
including the fundamentals of preparing specimens for the
microscope from a variety of materials, the details of the
instrumentation used in data collection, the parameters under which
optimal data are collected, the current methods of data
reconstruction, and selected methods of data analysis. Tricks of
the trade are described that are often learned only through trial
and error, allowing users to succeed much more quickly in the
challenging areas of specimen preparation and data collection. A
closing chapter on applications presents selected, state-of-the-art
results using the LEAP microscope.
This collection features five peer-reviewed reviews on managing
bacterial diseases of poultry. The first chapter provides a brief
overview of Campylobacter in poultry production and the routes of
transmission from bird to human. It considers current and future
challenges in controlling Campylobacter, as well as the control
measures implemented to reduce the occurrence of infection in
poultry flocks. The second chapter discusses economically-important
enteric diseases and disorders of poultry. The chapter highlights
the aetiology of these diseases and explores more sustainable
alternatives to promote gastrointestinal health, such as
plant-derived extracts, organic acids, prebiotics and probiotics.
The third chapter provides an overview of best practices to manage
disease outbreaks in poultry. It reviews current disease
preventative measures, health monitoring procedures, as well as
disease investigation techniques. The fourth chapter reviews the
emergence and re-emergence of several infectious pathogens in
poultry production and the consequent need to improve current
biosecurity measures in poultry flocks to ensure optimal animal
health and welfare. The final chapter considers the main
alternatives to antibiotics in preventing zoonoses and other major
pathogens in poultry. The chapter reviews the sector's use of
prebiotics and related compounds, as well as the beneficial effects
of their use.

For hundreds of years, we thought we knew what happened during
Jesus' last days. Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday are
not only observed by Christians around the world, but are also
recognized in calendars and by non-practitioners as commemorating
the true timeline of events in the life of Christ. But apparent
inconsistencies in the gospel accounts of Jesus' final week have
puzzled Bible scholars for centuries. In The Mystery of the Last
Supper, Colin Humphreys uses science to reveal the truth about
Jesus' final days. Reconciling conflicting Gospel accounts and
scientific evidence, Humphreys reveals the exact date of the Last
Supper in a definitive new timeline of Holy Week.

"Needless to say, such a book is timely as it provides a valuable
account of modern food safety management in poultry processing,
coupled with the key elements of sustainable production systems." -
Poultry Production To meet growing demand, the FAO has estimated
that world poultry production needs to grow by 2-3% per year to
2030. Much of the increase in output already achieved has been as a
result of improvements in commercial breeds combined with rearing
in more intensive production systems. However, more intensive
systems and complex supply chains have increased the risk of rapid
transmission of animal diseases and zoonoses. Consumer expectations
of sensory and nutritional quality have never been higher. At the
same time consumers are more concerned about the environmental
impact of poultry production as well as animal welfare. Drawing on
an international range of expertise, this book reviews research on
safety, quality and sustainability issues in poultry production.
Part 1 discusses risks from pathogens, detection and safety
management on farms and in slaughterhouse operations. Part 2 looks
at ways of enhancing the flavour, colour, texture and nutritional
quality of poultry meat. Finally, the book reviews the
environmental impact of poultry production. Achieving sustainable
production of poultry meat Volume 1: Safety, quality and
sustainability will be a standard reference for poultry and food
scientists in universities, government and other research centres
and companies involved in poultry production. It is accompanied by
two further volumes which review poultry breeding, nutrition,
health and welfare.

New World Orders Violence, Sanction, and Authority in the Colonial
Americas Edited by John Smolenski and Thomas J. Humphrey
"Fascinating case studies of how authority was both brutal yet
precarious and malleable in the French, Spanish, English, and Dutch
empires of the New World."--"American Historical Review" "This is
an almost ideal anthology for graduate students and scholars still
weighing the value of Atlantic-world scholarship. The essays are
consistently strong and jargon-free. Editors and authors have
produced a crisp, coherent, and readable volume whose case studies
and arguments should stimulate discussion on the merits of the
connecting themes rather than suffer cannibalization by specialists
perusing only contributions from a particular geographic
region."--"Hispanic American Historical Review" "This wide-ranging
collection . . . offers a] compelling framework to connect the
small triumphs and tragedies of daily life in colonial outposts
with the grand plans of distant empire builders."--"Journal of the
Early Republic" As the geographic boundaries of early American
history have expanded, so too have historians' attempts to explore
the comparative dimensions of this history. At the same time,
historians have struggled to find a conceptual framework flexible
enough to incorporate the sweeping narratives of imperial history
and the hidden narratives of social history into a broader,
synthetic whole. No such paradigm that captures the two
perspectives has yet emerged. "New World Orders" addresses these
broad conceptual issues by reexamining the relationships among
violence, sanction, and authority in the early modern Americas.
More specifically, the essays in this volume explore the wide
variety of legal and extralegal means--from state-sponsored
executions to unsanctioned crowd actions--by which social order was
maintained, with a particular emphasis on how extralegal sanctions
were defined and used; how such sanctions related to legal forms of
maintaining order; and how these patterns of sanction, embedded
within other forms of colonialism and culture, created cultural,
legal, social, or imperial spaces in the early Americas. With
essays written by senior and junior scholars on the British,
Spanish, Dutch, and French colonies, "New World Orders" presents
one of the most comprehensive looks at the sweep of colonization in
the Atlantic world. By juxtaposing case studies from Brazil,
Venezuela, New York, California, Saint Domingue, and Louisiana with
treatments of broader trends in Anglo-America or Spanish America
more generally, the volume demonstrates the need to examine the
questions of violence, sanction, and authority in hemispheric
perspective. John Smolenski teaches history at the University of
California, Davis. Thomas J. Humphrey is Associate Professor of
History at Cleveland State University and author of "Land and
Liberty: Hudson Valley Riots in the Age of Revolution." Early
