Reading the Law - Studies in Honour of Gordon J. Wenham (Hardcover): J.G. McConville, Karl Moeller Reading the Law - Studies in Honour of Gordon J. Wenham (Hardcover)
J.G. McConville, Karl Moeller
R5,280 Discovery Miles 52 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The volume will be a collection of essays by leading scholars on the interpretation of the Old Testament on the topics of law and ethics. The book is a Festschrift for Prof. Gordon Wenham. Its chosen theme is intended to reflect his central interests in his long career of writing on the Old Testament, in which he has exemplified the highest standards of scholarship, but also written for practitioners of biblical interpretation. The topic of 'reading the law' has three aspects which will be treated by the various contributions, namely: Reading the Pentateuch: Pentateuchal criticism, narrative readings, rhetorical-critical readings; Reading the Law: the law codes in historical and/or literary context, anthropological readings, the law in relation to prophets, wisdom, worship; Reading the Bible ethically: e.g. ethics of marriage, war. Claudia Camp and Andrew Mein were formerly of "Journal for the Study of the Old Testament Supplement", a book series that features original and creative approaches to the interpretation of Old Testament literature. "The Bible in the 21st Century" series, a part of "JSOTS", seeks to examine contemporary authoritative and cultural meanings of bibles by focusing on the processes of transmission, readership and actualization of biblical texts up to and including the twenty-first century. The series explores issues related to contemporary culture and the place of the bible and religion within it. Copenhagen International Seminar is also part of "JSOTS."

Set in the Persian Empire, one of the greatest kingdoms the world has ever known, the stories contained in the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah provide the most comprehensive scriptural account of the restored Judean community after the Babylonian Exile. The Book of Esther is also set in the Persian period of Israel's history, although the concern is for a different community. Carrying forward brilliantly the pattern established by Barclay's New Testament series, The Daily Study Bible has been extended to cover the entire Old Testament as well. Invaluable for individual devotional study, for group discussion, and for classroom use, The Daily Study Bible provides a useful, reliable, and eminently readable way to discover what the Scriptures were saying then and what God is saying today.

God and Earthly Power - An Old Testament Political Theology (Paperback): J.G. McConville God and Earthly Power - An Old Testament Political Theology (Paperback)
J.G. McConville
R1,737 Discovery Miles 17 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In "God and Earthly Power" J. G. McConville considers the nature of human power in the light of belief in God. The Bible, and especially the Old Testament, is relevant to the question, not least because perceptions about the use of power in relation to God are often derived correctly or incorrectly from it. This book thus aims to address a world in which Goda??s power is often invoked, from quite different quarters, in order to justify political and military action. McConvillea??s interpretation of the Old Testament focuses on Deuteronomy and the narrative in which it is set, because these are especially fruitful for political thinking. His case is argued for both exegetically and in relation to the actual use of the Old Testament in the history of political thought. McConville's core argument is that divine power, mediated through Torah, results in human freedom and a mandate for the political responsibility of citizens. Indeed, it is even the best guarantee of these.
