Developed in response to the 1899 Hague Convention, the 37-mm gun
met the restrictions on the size of weapons that could fire
explosive shells, yet was also light and lethal enough to be used
in battle. After World War I, in which the French Model 1916 37-mm
was used extensively, several countries developed or adopted the
37-mm gun. Behind in their development of an anti-tank gun, the
United States relied on the German Pak 36 37-mm design as a basis
for development. By the mid 1930s, the US Ordnance Department
designed the M3 37-mm gun and M4 carriage resulting in a towed
anti-tank gun, the first anti-tank gun in the U.S. Army. This gun
proved effective at the beginning of World War II, but as German
armour protection increased, it could not penetrate the frontal
armuor of many German tanks and was relegated to lesser roles.
However, the gun proved effective against the Japanese tanks and
Japanese strong points in the Far East. The US military used the
gun on several production and experimental armoured vehicles
including the M3 Lee Medium Tank, the M3 Stuart Light Tank, the M5
Stuart Light Tank, the M8 Armored Car, the T17E1 Staghound Armored
Car and the M3A1E3 Scout Car. The gun was also used on several
non-armoured vehicles, the P39 Aeracobra, and selected naval
vessels. Despite its small size, the U.S. M3 37-mm gun served
throughout the war, on many vehicles and performed exactly as
designed. Fully illustrated, this is the first complete account of
the development and use of the US 37-mm gun in World War II.

This dynamic and comprehensive text from nationally renowned
scholars continues to demonstrate the profound influence African
Americans have had-and continue to have-on American politics. Using
two interrelated themes-the idea of universal freedom and the
concept of minority-majority coalitions-the text demonstrates how
the presence of Africans in the United States affected the founding
of the Republic and its political institutions and processes. The
authors show that through the quest for their own freedom in the
United States, African Americans have universalized and expanded
the freedoms of all Americans. New to the Ninth Edition * Updated
sections on intersectionality, dealing with issues of race and
gender. * Updated section on African American music, to include the
role of Hip Hop. * Updated sections on mass media coverage of
African Americans and the African American celebrity impact on
politics, adding new mention of the CROWN Act and the politics of
Black hair. * Updated section on the "Black Lives Matter" movement,
adding a new section on the "Me Too" movement. * Updated sections
on African Americans in Congress, with a new mention of the Squad.
* Updated voting behavior through the 2020 elections, connecting
the Obama years with the new administration. * A comparison of the
2016 and 2020 presidential elections. * A discussion of the way in
which race contributes to the polarization of American politics in
the 2020 presidential campaign. * An analysis of the racial
attitudes of President Trump, and the institutionally racist
policies of his administrations. * Updated chapter on state and
local politics, including a new section on state executive offices
and Black mayors. * Updated sections on material well-being
indicators, adding a new section on the coronavirus pandemic and
the Black community. * The first overall assessment of the Obama
administration in relation to domestic and foreign policy and
racial politics.
This volume emphasises knowledge transfer from the lab to the field
and describes collaboration technology through three lenses: Proof
of Concept, Proof of Value, and Proof of Use. The contributors
focus on work practices that extend collaboration into a structured
form where groups can work together to solve real-world complex
problems. As with the other AMIS volumes, the contributors comprise
internationally known experts in the field of Information Systems.

The process of controlling criminal investigations is a complex
matter, yet it has frequently been minimized or neglected in police
management publications. But knowing how to properly plan for an
event, make resource agreements with other participants in the
investigation, and implement a coordinating system within the
agency is critical to proper case control in a department. Now in
its second edition, Managing and Coordinating Major Criminal
Investigations details a methodology that is adaptable to any
existing record or control system. This new edition features an
expanded outline format, more detailed instructions, and updated
case systems. It also reflects the introduction of new technology
developed since the benchmark first edition. Designed so that users
can determine the necessary requirements to meet their individual
needs, the book aids in the thinking and direction required to
accomplish this task. Decisionmakers in small and large agencies
can tailor the system to their specifications, retaining
flexibility to decide the applications, degree of implementation,
and usage. Filled with concrete, specific guidelines and
time-tested wisdom from a law enforcement veteran, this book
provides police supervisors with the essential tools needed to
improve or develop a systemic approach to the control of major
investigations. More importantly, it helps to create the necessary
mindsets required in supervisors to manage any major crime
effectively.
This volume focuses on language planning in the Cameroon, Sudan and
Zimbabwe, explaining the linguistic diversity, historical and
political contexts, current language situation (including
language-in-education planning), the role of the media, the role of
religion and the roles of non-indigenous languages. The authors are
indigenous to the situations described, and draw on their
experience and extensive fieldwork there. The extended case studies
contained in this volume draw together the literature on each of
the polities to present an overview of the existing research
available, while also providing new research-based information. The
purpose of this volume is to provide an up-to-date overview of the
language situation in each polity based on a series of key
questions, in the hope that this might facilitate the development
of a richer theory to guide language policy and planning in other
polities where similar issues may arise. This book comprises case
studies originally published in the journal Current Issues in
Language Planning.
This book is a selection of the best and peer-reviewed articles
presented at the CUPUM (Computers in Urban Planning and Urban
Management) conference, held in the second week of July 2015 at MIT
in Boston, USA. The contributions provide state-of the art overview
of the availability and application of Planning Support Systems
(PSS) in the framework of Smart Cities.
This manual provides laboratory-based learning experiences in
perceptually and psychosocially linked exercise assessment,
prescription, and programming. The primary pedagogic outcome is the
ability to use applied theory and practice in perceptual and
psychosocial exercise assessment and program design to promote the
adoption and maintenance of a physically active lifestyle,
enhancing overall health fitness. Perceptual and psychosocial
variables are presented in individual, stand-alone laboratory
modules that can supplement existing curricula such as exercise and
sport psychology, exercise physiology, exercise testing and
prescription, and exercise training and conditioning. In addition,
the complete modular set has a conceptual flow that allows its
presentation as an entire, laboratory-based course. The laboratory
modules are divided into three primary units: assessment
(theoretical constructs, scales and procedures, tests),
prescription (self-regulation, performance), and program
evaluation. The manual uses a unique format in which case studies
are embedded in the conceptual flow of each lab module facilitating
translation of laboratory results to real-world application. The
manual concludes with a discussion of perceptually and
psychosocially linked exercise prescription and programming
applications in public health, such as program monitoring and
adherence.

This is the second volume in the NATO ASI series dealing with the
topic of hydrogen in solids. The first (V. B76, Metal Hydrides)
appeared five years ago and focussed primarily on crystalline
phases of hydrided metallic systems. In the intervening period, the
amorphous solid state has become an area of intense research
activity, encompassing both metallic and non-metallic, e.g.
semiconducting, systems. At the same time the problem of storage of
hydrogen, which motivated the first ASI, continues to be important.
In the case of metallic systems, there were early indications that
metallic glasses and disordered alloys may be more corrosion
resistant, less susceptible to embrittlement by hydrogen and have a
higher hydrogen mobility than ordered metals or intermetallics. All
of these properties are desirable for hydrogen storage. Subsequent
research has shown that thermodynamic instability is a severe
problem in many amorphous metal hydrides. The present ASI has
provided an appropriate forum to focus on these issues.

Is there biblical evidence for a thousand-year earthly kingdom (the
Millennium) ruled by Christ before the fulfillment of the new
heaven and new earth? Revelation chapter 20 seems to suggest so,
but few books of the Bible are so difficult to interpret. And a
discussion of the Millennium branches out into many other
theological questions about the end times (eschatology): Are these
the last days? What must happen before Jesus returns? What part
does the church play? This Counterpoints volume compares three
views of the Millennium: Premillennial: Christ will come again
before this kingdom is established. Postmillennial: our present age
represents that kingdom and that the church is and must move toward
the fulfillment of this kingdom. Amillennial: a future Millennium
is not a literal kingdom, and when Christ returns, he will usher in
an immediate new heaven and new earth. Robert B. Strimple, Kenneth
L. Gentry Jr., and Craig A. Blaising offer their perspectives,
giving their exegetical reasoning. Each of them then responds to
the views held by their peers in a respectful and informative
setting, making it easy for you to compare their beliefs and gain a
better understanding of how this aspect of Christianity's great
hope--the return of Jesus--is understood by the church. The
Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of
scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both
fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a
one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different
positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Of all the books of the Bible, few are as fascinating or as
intimidating as Revelation. Four grim horsemen, the Antichrist, the
ten-horned beast, the ultimate battle at Armageddon, the "mark of
the beast." It's no wonder that these images have griped the
imagination of so many--and have been variously interpreted as
symbolizing everything from Hitler and Gorbachev to credit cards
and the Internet. Is the book of Revelation a blueprint for the
future? A book of powerful symbolic imagery with warnings for the
church? Is it essentially an imaginative depiction of historical
events in the first century? Four Views on the Book of Revelation
explores four interpretations of the book of the Apocalypse:
Preterist - a historical interpretation, arguing that most of
John's prophecies occurred in the first century, soon after his
writing of them. Idealist - a spiritual or symbolic interpretation,
arguing that the events in Revelation are not literal, and that
apocalyptic literature requires a different approach than the
Gospels or Epistles. Classical dispensationalism - a literal
interpretation based on a reading of Revelation that pays close
attention to the rules of grammar and the separate eras of
covenantal history. Progressive dispensationalism - a modification
of classical that has its root in the understanding of Christ's
reign beginning immediately after the resurrection. The
Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of
scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both
fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a
one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different
positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Are Miraculous Gifts for Today? takes you to the heart of one of
the most dividing questions in the Church today: how are the Holy
Spirit's miracles at work among God's people now? Is he still
actively giving the gifts of tongues, prophecy, and healing that
fill the book of Acts? Is he driving out demons when Christians
command them to flee? Or are these events confined to the time of
the early church and the apostles? This volume of the Counterpoints
series provides an impartial format for comparing the four main
positions on present-day miracles (including the history and
distinctions between the three positions that affirm miraculous
gifts) with voice also given to a large sector of open-but-cautious
evangelicals: Cessationist: there are no miraculous gifts of the
Holy Spirit today. Pentecostal: gifts are intended for today, with
certain nuances focused on baptism and speaking in tongues.
Charismatic: gifts are intended for today and should be actively
practiced. Third Wave: gifts are intended for today, with greater
emphasis on baptism and less on tongues. This thought-provoking
book will help Christians on every side of the miraculous gifts
debate to better understand their own position and the positions of
others. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique
of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both
fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a
one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different

Blues Hall of Fame Inductee, 2019 - A "Classic of Blues Literature"
In 1941 and '42 African American scholars from Fisk
University-among them the noted composer and musicologist John W.
Work III, sociologist Lewis Wade Jones, and graduate student Samuel
C. Adams Jr.-joined folklorist Alan Lomax of the Library of
Congress on research trips to Coahoma County, Mississippi. Their
mission was "to document adequately the cultural and social
backgrounds for music in the community." Among the fruits of the
project were the earliest recordings by the legendary blues singer
and guitarist Muddy Waters. The hallmark of the study was to have
been a joint publication of its findings by Fisk and the Library of
Congress. While this publication was never completed, Lost Delta
Found is composed of the writings, interviews, notes, and musical
transcriptions produced by Work, Jones, and Adams in the Coahoma
County study. Their work captures, with compelling immediacy, a
place, a people, a way of life, and a set of rich musical
traditions as they existed in the 1940s.
The Hudson Review has always had an international focus. Travel and
reports from abroad have figured prominently in the journal,
including essays on exotic and picturesque locales, as well as
accounts from war-torn areas and the experiences of exiles. Many of
these are pilgrimages; others are harrowing memoirs. What unites
even the most devastating of these accounts are intellectual
curiosity and a spirit of adventure. Places Lost and Found is a
treasury of distinctive and compelling essays selected from six
decades of the Hudson Review. From a description of the gardens of
Kyoto and a portrait of Syria just before its civil war to
reflections on Veblen and the Mall of America, these essays explore
an array of places that are deeply layered with history and
meaning. The stunning cover photo of the Semper Opera House in
Dresden encapsulates many of the themes of the book: war and its
aftermath, the importance of the built environment in any
discussion of "place," the endurance of civilization and
resilience, and of course the romance of travel.
This book explores the history of the Mayo Clinic Cardiac
Catheterization Laboratory from 1940 to present day. It examines
the life and journey of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and its
ultimate success in implementing the vision of the Mayo philosophy
of emphasizing collaboration between lab-based scientists and
clinical health care professionals to bring innovation to the
clinical practice and lead landmark changes in the practice of
medicine profoundly enhancing what we can offer to patients and
society alike. The book is divided into decades, with separate
sections in each decade on key cardiology topics such as congenital
heart disease, coronary heart disease, hemodynamics, pacing, and
electrophysiology (EP). Chapters will highlight training, advances,
new procedures, new technologies, and fundamental changes to the
field throughout the decades, attributed to the work done by Cath
lab personnel. Chapters also identify the problems faced, the unmet
clinical needs of patients and society, problems solved, and things
learned and transmitted into the clinical arena along the way. The
Mayo Clinic Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory will be a valuable
resource for health care professionals, clinicians, scientists,
innovators, administrators, and small and large device
manufacturing companies as well as historians and past and present
patients.
This new book on _Bismarck_ offers a forensic analysis of the
design, operation and loss of Germany's greatest battleship and
draws on survivors' accounts and the authors" combined decades of
experience in naval architecture and command at sea. Their
investigation into every aspect of this battleship has taken
fifty-six years of painstaking research, during which time they
conducted extensive interviews and corresponded with the ship's
designers and the survivors of the battle of the Denmark Strait and
Bismarck's final battle. Albert Schnarke, for instance, the former
gunnery officer of _Tirpitz_, _Bismarck_'s sister ship, aided the
authors greatly by translating and supplying manuscript materials
from those who had participated in the design and operations.
Survivors of _Bismarck_'s engagements contributed to this
comprehensive study including D B H Wildish, RN, damage control
officer aboard HMS _Prince of Wales_, who located photographs of
battle damage to his ship. After the wreck of _Bismarck_ was
discovered in June 1989, the authors served as technical
consultants to Dr Robert Ballard, who led three trips to the site.
Film maker and explorer James Cameron has contributed a chapter,
which gives the reader a comprehensive overview of his deep-sea
explorations on _Bismarck_ and it is illustrated with his team's
remarkable photographs of the wreck. The result of nearly six
decades of research and collaboration, this new work is an
engrossing and encyclopaedic account of the events surrounding one
of the most epic naval battles of World War Two. And _Battleship
Bismarck_ finally resolves some of the major questions around her
career, not least the most profound one of all: Who sank the
_Bismarck,_ the British or the Germans?'
