Human rights and environmental protection are closely intertwined,
and both are critically dependent on supportive legal opportunity
structures. These legal structures consist of access to the courts;
'legal stock' or the set of available standards and precedents on
which to base litigation; and institutional receptiveness to
potential litigation. These elements all depend on a variety of
social, political, and economic variables. This book critically
analyses the complexities of uniting human rights advocacy and
environmental protection. Bringing together international experts
in the field, it documents the current state of our environmental
human rights knowledge, strategically critical questions that
remain unanswered, and the initiatives required to develop those
answers. It is ideal for researchers in environmental governance
and law, as well as interested practitioners and advanced students
working in public policy, political science and environmental
studies.
Why does a man with a Ferrari and a Porsche drive a Fiat Panda? Is
going fast really necessary? Is it your fault if you get run over?
Why will electric cars really save the planet (possibly)? In
Carbolics the UK's favourite petrol head (after Clarkson and
Hammond) James May answers these questions and more. Across 80
essays, James gives his quirky, entertaining take on cars,
motorbikes, trucks - and explains why the bicycle might just be the
best invention of all. Written with James's characteristic wit and
humour, Carbolics is the perfect Christmas gift for petrolheads.
Being given yet another pointless 'man manual' that told him fifty
ways to tie a bow tie in under 30 seconds made James May,
co-presenter of The Grand Tour, certain there was a need for
another kind of book. This book, in fact. He reckons there are nine
vital things that a chap should be able to do. Not stuff you can
download from the internet, but really important things. You never
know when you might need to land an A330 Airbus, or deliver twins.
And there may well be a moment when being able to play a bit of
classical music on the piano is absolutely crucial to your success
with women. So read, learn and be prepared - you'll wonder how you
ever lived without it.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a key vitamin to animals and plants.
This book looks at all aspects of vitamin C; its chemical and
biochemical properties, its role in various plants and animals and
its effect on our health. Written by an international team of
experts, together they represent much of the expertise on vitamin C
throughout the world.
"Top Gear's" James May is on a mission to save modern man
For at least two decades now modern man has been on the brink of
a crisis. Persuaded by both the post-feminist political landscape
and his representation in the popular media to remodel himself as
an endearingly hopeless halfwit, he now exists only as an object of
pity. James and his happy band of brothers (plus a few women, but
we try to edit them out) are engaged on a quest to lead maledom to
a broad sunlit upland strewn with slim books of English verse and
neatly stacked with correctly sharpened tools arranged in
descending size order. From here they confront the mysteries of
romance and fashion, the cult of men's cooking, and the daunting
underworld of hardcore DIY. Read it and remember that, as a man,
your first duty is to be dependable. And then you can have a
pint.
The authors not only give you 12 tools to overcome every objection
known to sales, using just your words. But they also give you a
method after ever chapter to permanently install each tool into
your brain so you will always have it with you for easy access. In
addition each tool has a unique name for creating an easy mnemonic.
Never be caught off guard again with an objection you can't handle.
It's such an easy method taught in this book you will amaze
yourself at how quickly you get it and how easily you use it.
The thermoluminescence (TL) properties of plagioclase separates
from 11 independently dated alkalic basalts 4,500 years to 3.3
million years old and 17 tholeiitic basalts 16 years to 450,000
years old from the Hawaiian Islands were investigated for the
purpose of developing a TL dating method for young volcanic rocks.
Ratios of natural to artificial TL intensity, when normalized for
natural radiation dose rates, were used to quantify the
thermoluminescence response of individual samples for
age-determination purposes. The TL ratios for the alkalic basalt
plagioclase were found to increase with age at a predictable
exponential rate that permits the use of the equation for the
best-fit line through a plot of the TL ratios relative to known age
as a TL age equation. The equation is applicable to rocks ranging
in composition from basaltic andesite to trachyte over the age
range from about 2,000 to at least 250,000 years before present
(B.P.). The TL ages for samples older than 50,000 years have a
calculated precision of less than: t 10 percent and a potential
estimated accuracy relative to potassium-argon ages of
approximately: t 10 percent. An attempt to develop a similar dating
curve for the tholeiitic basalts was not as successful, primarily
because the dose rates are on the average lower than those for the
alkalic basalts by a factor of 6, resulting in lower TL intensities
in the tholeiitic basalts for samples of equivalent age, and also
because the age distribution of dated material is inadequate. The
basic TL properties of the plagioclase from the two rock types are
similar, however, and TL dating of tholeiitic basalts should
eventually be feasible over the age range 10,000 to at least
200,000 years B.P. The average composition of the plagioclase
separates from the alkalic basalts ranges from oligoclase to
andesine; compositional variations within this range have no
apparent effect on the TL ratios.
