Renowned chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen regularly leads selected groups of guests on a JAN Voyage – culinary journeys to France and Italy.

This cookbook, JAN Voyage, takes readers and home cooks on memorable taste explorations, transporting them to places they’ve never been to – which lie off the map in secret locations and ancient medieval villages – and sometimes back to ones they hold dear. The book is a compass, pointing towards the richness of encounters, both great and small, that define what it means to voyage.

Each recipe unlocks the essence of a place that has captured Jan Hendrik’s heart and the people met on the journey.

The inspiration behind Restaurant Klein JAN did not come from a desire to create a fine dining experience in the middle of the Kalahari. It came from the heart – from the tables of my childhood – memories that I have taken with me into an unknown land. Although I hadn’t been to the Kalahari before visiting Tswalu for the first time, I instantly connected with this place. I felt my grandmother’s presence at Boscia House, I fell in love with the people of the Northern Cape and was overwhelmed by their hospitality, and the more time I spent in the Kalahari, the deeper my roots spread through the endless red earth. This book is my homage to losing your heart to a special place, and making your dreams come true.

Creating Klein JAN has been Chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s great homecoming project. Growing up on a farm in South Africa’s rural Mpumalanga province, he felt an instant connection to the vastness of the Kalahari and knew that the time had come to return the spirit of JAN – his Michelin-star restaurant in Nice – to home soil.

Klein JAN is situated on one of South Africa’s leading private game reserves, Tswalu Kalahari, a refuge – untamed, untouched, unspoiled – that celebrates the simple, authentic splendours of this magical region.

Klein JAN tells the story

Nico Karssemeijer, Martin Thijssen, Jan Hendriks, Leon van Erning
R2,765 Discovery Miles 27 650 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In June 1998 the Fourth International Workshop on Digital Mammography was held in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, where it was hosted by the department of Radiology of the University Hospital Nijmegen. This series of meetings was initiated at the 1993 SPIE Biomedical Image Processing Conference in San Jose, USA, where a number of sessions were entirely devoted to mammographic image analysis. At very successful subsequent workshops held in York, UK (1994) and Chicago, USA (1996), the scope of the conference was broadened, establishing a platform for presentation and discussion of new developments in digital mammog raphy. Topics that are addressed at these meetings are computer-aided diagnosis, image processing, detector development, system design, observer performance and clinical evaluation. The goal is to bring researchers from universities, breast cancer experts, and engineers together, to exchange information and present new scientific developments in this rapidly evolving field. This book contains all the scientific papers and posters presented at the work shop in Nijmegen. Contributions came from as many as 20 different countries and 190 participants attended the meeting. At a technical exhibit companies demon strated new products and work in progress. Abstracts of all papers were reviewed by members of the scientific committee. Many of the accepted papers had excellent quality, but due to limited space not all of them could be included as full papers in these proceedings. Papers that were rated high by the reviewers are included as long or short papers, others appear as extended abstracts in the last chapter."

Jan-Hendrik Passoth, Birgit Peuker, Michael Schillmeier
R4,357 Discovery Miles 43 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The question of agency is a key issue in social theory and research. The discourse of human agency as an effect of social relations is deeply intertwined with the history of sociological thought. However, in most recent discussions the role of non-humans gains a substantial impact concerning agency. Agency without Actors? New Approaches to Collective Action asks: Are nonhumans active, do they have agency? And if so: how and in which different ways?

Consequently, Agency without Actors? New Approaches to Collective Action

  • outlines a wide range of novel accounts that link human and non-human agency
  • tries to understand social-technical, political and environmental networks as different forms of agency that produce discrete and identifiable entities
  • asks how different types of (often conflicting) agency and agents are distinguished in practice, how they are maintained and how they interfere with each other.

By studying the substantial impact of the role of non-humans in connection with human relations, the book aims to advance the discourse on agency and investigates into the different possible modes of human and nonhuman interplay.

This book is essential reading for students and scholars of sociology, science and technology studies, social anthropology, animal studies, environmental studies and social theory.

This book presents a collection of carefully refereed research articles and lecture notes stemming from the Conference "Automorphic Forms and L-Functions", held at the University of Heidelberg in 2016. The theory of automorphic forms and their associated L-functions is one of the central research areas in modern number theory, linking number theory, arithmetic geometry, representation theory, and complex analysis in many profound ways. The 19 papers cover a wide range of topics within the scope of the conference, including automorphic L-functions and their special values, p-adic modular forms, Eisenstein series, Borcherds products, automorphic periods, and many more.

Jan-Hendrik Wehner, Dominic Jekel, Rubens Sampaio, Peter Hagedorn
R1,518 Discovery Miles 15 180 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The main goal of this book is to show how to modify and optimize the properties of the damping matrix in order to find the most beneficial way of adding damping to a given mechanical system. To this end, a two-degree-of-freedom model of disc brake is analyzed to gain insight into the fundamental physical behavior of damping. In addition, more realistic, high-dimensional finite element brake models are studied and optimized for stability.

Unit Equations in Diophantine Number Theory (Hardcover): Jan-Hendrik Evertse, Kalman Gyory Unit Equations in Diophantine Number Theory (Hardcover)
Jan-Hendrik Evertse, Kalman Gyory
R2,020 Discovery Miles 20 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Diophantine number theory is an active area that has seen tremendous growth over the past century, and in this theory unit equations play a central role. This comprehensive treatment is the first volume devoted to these equations. The authors gather together all the most important results and look at many different aspects, including effective results on unit equations over number fields, estimates on the number of solutions, analogues for function fields and effective results for unit equations over finitely generated domains. They also present a variety of applications. Introductory chapters provide the necessary background in algebraic number theory and function field theory, as well as an account of the required tools from Diophantine approximation and transcendence theory. This makes the book suitable for young researchers as well as experts who are looking for an up-to-date overview of the field.

R2,087 Discovery Miles 20 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book grew out of three series of lectures given at the summer school on "Modular Forms and their Applications" at the Sophus Lie Conference Center in Nordfjordeid in June 2004. The first series treats the classical one-variable theory of elliptic modular forms. The second series presents the theory of Hilbert modular forms in two variables and Hilbert modular surfaces. The third series gives an introduction to Siegel modular forms and discusses a conjecture by Harder. It also contains Harder's original manuscript with the conjecture.

Each part treats a number of beautiful applications.

In Staatsoper Stuttgart's fantastical contemporary update of Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle, director Christof Nel creates characters that universalise the epic story based on Norweigan mythology and German poetry. In this story where gods, giants, dwarves, and humans vie for a special ring, made for the dwarf Alberich (though at the price of decrying all love), Jan-Hendrik Rootering plays an out-of-shape middle-aged Wotan, Renate Behle plays a rather masculine Brunnhilde, and the countless Valkyries take the form of badly-dressed teenagers.

Secured Lending in Eastern Europe - Comparative Law of Secured Transactions and the EBRD Model Law (Hardcover, New):... Secured Lending in Eastern Europe - Comparative Law of Secured Transactions and the EBRD Model Law (Hardcover, New)
Jan-Hendrik Roever
R10,627 Discovery Miles 106 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Based upon the work done to prepare and implement a Model Law drawn up for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), this book provides a comparative account of the laws relating to secured lending in the 27 EBRD member states in Eastern Europe (including Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia and the Slovak Republic). Since many of the former Soviet-bloc countries have joined the EU, increasing amounts of money are being invested by western companies and financial institutions into Eastern Europe generally. Knowledge of the applicable laws relating to security is vital to such investment and lending.
This is an explanatory and practical book. Throughout the book the theme will be what characteristics make a security law useful from a practical point of view. Hence, the purpose of the book is not merely to describe existing rules on security but to concentrate on how those rules can be made practical. The EBRD's Model Law on Secured Transactions and the EBRD's Core Principles for a Modern Security Law serve as basic reference points. In addition, the author introduces a comparative perspective in order to make the reader aware of significant differences between various national security laws. The main reference systems are English, German and US-American law. The principles of security law developed under western legal systems are contrasted with the principles of security law as they can now be described after 15 years of legal reforms in central and eastern European countries.
