The inspiration behind Restaurant Klein JAN did not come from a desire to create a fine dining experience in the middle of the Kalahari. It came from the heart – from the tables of my childhood – memories that I have taken with me into an unknown land. Although I hadn’t been to the Kalahari before visiting Tswalu for the first time, I instantly connected with this place. I felt my grandmother’s presence at Boscia House, I fell in love with the people of the Northern Cape and was overwhelmed by their hospitality, and the more time I spent in the Kalahari, the deeper my roots spread through the endless red earth. This book is my homage to losing your heart to a special place, and making your dreams come true.

Creating Klein JAN has been Chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s great homecoming project. Growing up on a farm in South Africa’s rural Mpumalanga province, he felt an instant connection to the vastness of the Kalahari and knew that the time had come to return the spirit of JAN – his Michelin-star restaurant in Nice – to home soil.

In June 1998 the Fourth International Workshop on Digital Mammography was held in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, where it was hosted by the department of Radiology of the University Hospital Nijmegen. This series of meetings was initiated at the 1993 SPIE Biomedical Image Processing Conference in San Jose, USA, where a number of sessions were entirely devoted to mammographic image analysis. At very successful subsequent workshops held in York, UK (1994) and Chicago, USA (1996), the scope of the conference was broadened, establishing a platform for presentation and discussion of new developments in digital mammog raphy. Topics that are addressed at these meetings are computer-aided diagnosis, image processing, detector development, system design, observer performance and clinical evaluation. The goal is to bring researchers from universities, breast cancer experts, and engineers together, to exchange information and present new scientific developments in this rapidly evolving field. This book contains all the scientific papers and posters presented at the work shop in Nijmegen. Contributions came from as many as 20 different countries and 190 participants attended the meeting. At a technical exhibit companies demon strated new products and work in progress. Abstracts of all papers were reviewed by members of the scientific committee. Many of the accepted papers had excellent quality, but due to limited space not all of them could be included as full papers in these proceedings. Papers that were rated high by the reviewers are included as long or short papers, others appear as extended abstracts in the last chapter."

The main goal of this book is to show how to modify and optimize the properties of the damping matrix in order to find the most beneficial way of adding damping to a given mechanical system. To this end, a two-degree-of-freedom model of disc brake is analyzed to gain insight into the fundamental physical behavior of damping. In addition, more realistic, high-dimensional finite element brake models are studied and optimized for stability.

Diophantine number theory is an active area that has seen tremendous growth over the past century, and in this theory unit equations play a central role. Jan-Hendrik Sewing makes a significant contribution to opening the black box of current divestiture decision-making. He uses detailed case studies, including numerous interviews with corporate executives and experts from management consulting, private equity, and investment banking. This book grew out of three series of lectures given at the summer school on "Modular Forms and their Applications" at the Sophus Lie Conference Center in Nordfjordeid in June 2004. The first series treats the classical one-variable theory of elliptic modular forms. The second series presents the theory of Hilbert modular forms in two variables and Hilbert modular surfaces. Based upon the work done to prepare and implement a Model Law drawn up for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), this book provides a comparative account of the laws relating to secured lending in the 27 EBRD member states in Eastern Europe (including Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia and the Slovak Republic). Since many of the former Soviet-bloc countries have joined the EU, increasing amounts of money are being invested by western companies and financial institutions into Eastern Europe generally. Knowledge of the applicable laws relating to security is vital to such investment and lending.
This is an explanatory and practical book. Throughout the book the theme will be what characteristics make a security law useful from a practical point of view. Hence, the purpose of the book is not merely to describe existing rules on security but to concentrate on how those rules can be made practical. The EBRD's Model Law on Secured Transactions and the EBRD's Core Principles for a Modern Security Law serve as basic reference points. In addition, the author introduces a comparative perspective in order to make the reader aware of significant differences between various national security laws.
