This book is a sequel and extension to the book "Business Process Management Cases", published in its first edition by Springer in 2018. It adds 22 new cases for practitioners and educators to showcase and study Business Process Management (BPM). The BPM cases collection is dedicated to providing a contemporary and comprehensive, industry-agnostic insight into the realities of BPM. In particular it focuses on the lessons that only authentic cases can provide. The experiences documented cover both, the positive impact of deploying BPM as well as the lessons learnt from failed attempts. Each case takes a holistic approach and by doing so, each chapter recognizes that BPM in practice is a multidimensional endeavor covering strategy to operations, systems and infrastructure, governance and culture, models and running processes. This volume also introduces a new device to plan and scope BPM initiatives: the BPM Billboard. The Billboard helps professionals to link BPM projects to the corporate strategy and to build the organizational capabilities to reach such strategic directive. Digital technologies do not just facilitate innovative process designs, but enable entire new strategic options. This book provides a contemporary and comprehensive overview of how to create process-enabled strategies in an opportunity-rich environment. Martin Petry, Hilti CIO This is the first book to present the BPM Billboard - A new management tool to plan and scope BPM initiatives. The Billboard together with the insightful real-world cases offers valuable guidance towards BPM success from a holistic perspective. Gero Decker, Signavio CEO
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the CAiSE Forum 2018 held in Tallinn, Estonia, as part of the 30th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering, CAiSE 2018, in June 2018. The CAiSE Forum is a place within the CAiSE conference for presenting and discussing new ideas and tools related to information systems engineering. Intended to serve as an interactive platform, the Forum aims at the presentation of emerging new topics and controversial positions, as well as demonstration of innovative systems, tools and applications. This year's theme was "Information Systems in the Big Data Era". The 10 full and 12 short papers in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 17 direct submissions (of which 2 full and 7 short papers were selected), plus 13 transfers from the CAiSE main conference (which resulted in another 8 full and 5 short papers).
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 4th workshop on Business Process Model and Notation, BPMN 2012, held in Vienna, Austria, in September 2012. The BPMN workshop series provides a forum for academics and practitioners who share an interest in business process modeling using the Business Process Modeling Notation, which is seen by many as the de facto standard for business process modeling. This year, the workshop lasted two days and consisted of both a scientific and a practitioner event. The six full and three short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 22 submissions. The workshop applied a thorough reviewing process, during which each paper was reviewed by three Program Committee members. In addition, an extended abstract of the workshop keynote is also included.
Business process modeling plays an important role in the management of business processes. As valuable design artifacts, business process models are subject to quality considerations. The absence of formal errors such as deadlocks is of paramount importance for the subsequent implementation of the process. In his book Jan Mendling develops a framework for the detection of formal errors in business process models and the prediction of error probability based on quality attributes of these models (metrics). He presents a precise description of Event-driven Process Chains (EPCs), their control-flow semantics and a suitable correctness criterion called EPC soundness.
This textbook covers the entire Business Process Management (BPM) lifecycle, from process identification to process monitoring, covering along the way process modelling, analysis, redesign and automation. Concepts, methods and tools from business management, computer science and industrial engineering are blended into one comprehensive and inter-disciplinary approach. The presentation is illustrated using the BPMN industry standard defined by the Object Management Group and widely endorsed by practitioners and vendors worldwide. In addition to explaining the relevant conceptual background, the book provides dozens of examples, more than 230 exercises - many with solutions - and numerous suggestions for further reading. This second edition includes extended and completely revised chapters on process identification, process discovery, qualitative process analysis, process redesign, process automation and process monitoring. A new chapter on BPM as an enterprise capability has been added, which expands the scope of the book to encompass topics such as the strategic alignment and governance of BPM initiatives. The textbook is the result of many years of combined teaching experience of the authors, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as in the context of professional training. Students and professionals from both business management and computer science will benefit from the step-by-step style of the textbook and its focus on fundamental concepts and proven methods. Lecturers will appreciate the class-tested format and the additional teaching material available on the accompanying website.
This book is the first to present a rich selection of over 30 real-world cases of how leading organizations conduct Business Process Management (BPM). The cases stem from a diverse set of industry sectors and countries on different continents, reporting on best practices and lessons learned. The book showcases how BPM can contribute to both exploitation and exploration in a digital world. All cases are presented using a uniform structure in order to provide valuable insights and essential guidance for students and practitioners.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the Blockchain and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Forum which was held as part of the 18th International Conference on Business Process Management, BPM 2020. The conference was planned to take place in Seville, Spain, in September 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference took place virtually. The Blockchain Forum and the RPA Forum have in common that they are centered around an emerging and exciting technology. The blockchain is a sophisticated distributed ledger technology, while RPA software allows for mimicking human, repetitive actions. Each of these have the potential to fundamentally change how business processes are being orchestrated and executed in practice. The BPM community has embraced these technologies as objects of analysis, design, development, and evaluation. The 14 full plus one short paper presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 28 submissions.
