This book looks at the changing nature of literacy and at the way
in which new and different literacies are emerging in the first
part of the 21st century. It considers how children are shaping and
being shaped by these changes, it also looks at how teachers need
to bridge-the-gap between children's out of school interests and
school based curriculum demands. This edited collection, which
features chapters by international experts and voices in the field,
aims to: Take a closer look at (and demystify) some of the
influences on literacy in the 21st century e.g. popular culture,
multi-modal texts, email, text messaging and critical literacy.
Enhance teachers' awareness of these developments and show how they
can use them to improve the literacy skills of their pupils. Show,
through the Implications for Practice sections, how teachers can
find different but straightforward ways of linking children's
personal, out-of-school interests with the demands of the school
curriculum.
This book brings together a collection of essays on the teaching of
writing. It is a companion to Prue Goodwin's The Literate Classroom
and The Articulate Classroom and aims to: augment our existing
knowledge about the teaching and learning of writing stimulate
thought and provoke discussion about writing offer a blend of
theory and practice give 'food for thought' and ideas for teaching
writing to primary age children. The topic of writing is one which
is under the spotlight with increasing regularity as politicians
and policy makers move on from reading as an 'issue'. This has
already happened in England where the National Literacy Strategy is
urging more emphasis on the teaching of writing to remedy
weaknesses in this area.
Talking Beyond the Page shows how different kinds of
picturebooks can be used with children of all ages and highlights
the positive educational gains to be made from reading, sharing,
talking and writing about picturebooks.
With contributions from some of the world's leading experts,
chapters in this book consider how:
- children think about and respond to visual images and other
aspects of picturebooks
- children's responses can be qualitatively improved by
encouraging them to think and talk about picturebooks before,
during and after reading them
- the non-text features of picturebooks, when considered in their
own right, can help readers to make more sense out of the book
- different kinds of picturebooks, such as wordless, postmodern,
multimodal and graphic novels, are structured
- children can respond creatively to picturebooks as art
forms
- picturebooks can help children deal with complex issues in
their lives
Talking beyond the Page also includes an exclusive interview
with Anthony Browne who shares thoughts about his work as an author
illustrator.
This inspiring and thought provoking book is essential reading
for teachers, student teachers, literacy consultants, academics
interested in picturebook research and those organising and
teaching on teacher education courses in children's literature and
literacy.

It is often assumed that picturebooks are for very young readers
because of their emphasis on the illustrations and their scarcity
of text; however, there are increasing numbers of picturebooks
where the age of the implied reader is questionable. These are
picturebooks whose controversial subject matter and unconventional,
often unsettling style of illustration challenge the reader,
pushing them to question and probe deeper to understand what the
book is about. In addition to the book challenging the reader, the
reader often challenges the book in an attempt to understand what
is being said. These increasingly popular picturebooks work on many
different levels; they are truly polysemic and worthy of in-depth
analysis. They push the reader to ask questions and in many
instances are intrinsically philosophical, often dealing with
fundamental life issues. Challenging and Controversial Picturebooks
examines these unconventional, non-conformist picturebooks,
considering what they are, their audience and their purpose. It
also considers: Children's and adults' thoughts on these kinds of
picturebooks. How challenging and unsettling wordless picturebooks
can play with the mind and promote philosophical thought. What
creates non-conformity and strangeness ... is it the illustrations
and their style, the subject matter or a combination of both? Why
certain countries create, promote and accept these picturebooks
more than others. Why certain picturebooks are censored and what
factors are in play when these decisions are made. The role of
publishers in translating and publishing these picturebooks.
Children's creative and critical responses to strange, unsettling
and often disturbing visual texts. This inspiring and
thought-provoking volume explores the work of a number of highly
respected, international picturebook experts and includes an
exclusive interview with the legendary Klaus Flugge, Managing
Director of Andersen Press, one of the few remaining independent
children's book publishers in England. It is an indispensable
reference for all interested in or working with picturebooks,
including researchers, students in higher and teacher education,
English advisors/inspectors, literacy consultants and classroom
teachers.

Wearing jewelry is essential to helping women developed their own
style. For women wishing to create a look that's unique, the last
thing they'll want to invest money in is mass produced pieces of
jewelry. It's for this reason alone, learning the skills needed for
making silver jewelry could prove extremely beneficial. When it
comes to making such pieces you need to know where to purchase the
right kinds of supplies. In this book not only do we discuss what's
needed to start your own silver jewelry making venture but also
provide several projects you may want to try out. We also recommend
you attend a silver jewelry-making course if you can as well. If
you're having problems finding courses we highly recommend you look
online for what you need. You may even find an online course that
enables you to learn in the comfort of your own home. As a
beginner, the kind of course you should be looking for is one,
which covers the basics. The kinds of skills this course should be
teaching you relate to soldering cutting, shaping and texturing the
silver plus polishing it. Also look for courses that teach you
skills such as making jump rings, hooks and clasps for earrings.
Finally what you should be looking for in a course is one that'll
allow you to make a number of different pieces of jewelry from
silver. The actual process of turning a piece of silver into a
piece of jewelry is not only very technical, but also allows your
artistic side to flourish. Once you've finished making silver
jewelry either for yourself or for someone else, can prove
extremely satisfying, especially as you watch the piece develop and
grow.
