Carmen Conde is a major figure in twentieth-century Spanish poetry. Though neglected up to now, "Mientras los Hombres Mueren" is the most important collection of war poetry to emerge from the Spanish Civil War. It was first published, in a limited edition, in Italy in 1953. Though it has been included in its entirety in anthologies of her work published in Spain in 1967, 1986 and 2007, this is the first free-standing edition since 1953 and the first ever critical edition. The collection was written in 1938-39, in Valencia, then the seat of the Republican Government. In prose poetry densely packed with imagery of nightmarish destruction, Conde gives voice to the experience of women and children suffering bombardment from air and sea, hunger and homelessness, and the loss of husbands, brothers and fathers at the front. The second half of the collection, "A los ninos muertos en la guerra," is an extended elegy for all those children killed in bombing raids during the war. This edition will be of interest to students and scholars of the Civil War and lovers of Spanish poetry in general.
By exploring textual, visual and material culture, this volume presents a range of new research into the experiences, agencies and diverse political identities of Iberian women between the fifteenth and early-eighteenth century. Representing Women's Political Identity in the Early Modern Iberian World explores how the political identities of Iberian women were represented in various forms of visual culture including: religious paintings and portraiture; costume; and devotional and funerary sculpture. This study examines the transmission of Iberian culture and its concepts of identity to locations such as Peru, Goa and Mexico, providing a rich insight into Iberia's complex history and legacy. The collection of essays explores the lives of protagonists, which vary from queens and members of the nobility to painters and nuns, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of both the elite and non-elite woman's experience in Spain, Portugal and their overseas realms during the early modern period. By addressing the significance of gender alongside the visual representation of political ideology and identity, this book is an invaluable source for students and researchers of early modern Iberia and the history of women.

Los catorce ensayos de este volumen conectan de una manera perceptible con el tema del movimiento enla poesia espanola del siglo de oro The fourteen essays of this volume engage in distinct ways with the matter of motion in early modern Spanish poetics, without limiting the dialectic of stasis and movement to any single sphere or manifestation. Interrogation of the interdependence of tradition and innovation, poetry, power and politics, shifting signifiers, the intersection of topography and deviant temporalities, the movement between the secular and the sacred, tensions between centres and peripheries, issues of manuscript circulation and reception, poetic calls and echoes across continents and centuries, and between creative writing and reading subjects, all demonstrate that Helgerson's central notion of conspicuous movement is relevant beyond early sixteenth-century secular poetics, By opening it up we approximate a better understanding of poetry's flexible spatio-temporal co-ordinates in a period of extraordinary historical circumstances and conterminous radical cultural transformation. Her Fated Place is a poem in four chapters telling the story of a young woman from the West of Ireland who makes her way from domestic service on an Irish landed estate to the sophistication of post-World War II Rome and its expatriate community via the London Blitz. Along the way she is exposed to the prevailing debates of the times, on religious sectarianism and piety, fascism, communism and tyranny, post-war guilt and triumphalism, all the while keeping her own counsel and coming to a surprising but not unexpected conclusion of her own in the end.
The original poems in this collection give voice to familiar female figures from Irish mythology, Irish folk history and folklore. The Gaelic tradition is highly sympathetic to its women protagonists. It has plenty of them and they have plenty to say for themselves, not all of it genteel. This series of poems provides a continuum from the ancient tales of the Tuatha de Danaan and the Red Branch up to an instance of politicised defence of folklore at the cusp of the second millennium. It is followed by a translation of the Lament for Arthur O'Leary composed, as was the custom, over the course of the laying out of his body and his funeral, by his widow Eibhlin Dhubh Ni Chonaill (c.1743-?) in Co. Cork in 1773. Eibhlin is one of the great poetic voices of the Gaelic tradition and the Lament one of its finest poems.
Carmen Conde (1907-1996) lived and worked in the Republican zone during the Spanish Civil War while her husband served at the front line. Her third collection of poetry, While the Men are Dying was written in Valencia as bombs fell, her city endured privation and her country was being torn apart. When the war ended, a known pro-Republican intellectual, she went into hiding and was forced to write under pseudonyms to make a living. These prose poems which describe the full horror of the impact of war on a civilian population and which empathise deeply with the sacrifice of the young men at the front were first published in Spain thirty years later, by then too late to be recognised as some of the most important and powerful poetry to emerge from the Spanish Civil War.
The poems in Lunatica derive from simple things around us in everyday life: the wild animals which live amongst us, domesticated ones who live with us, landscapes, cityscapes, people we observe but don't know, and the moon shining down, serene and silent, on all of it.
Out of the Woods: A Bird Watcher's Year is a journey through the
seasons and a joyous celebration of growing old. In fifty-nine
essays and poems, Ora E. Anderson, birder, bird carver, naturalist,
and nature writer, reveals the insights and recollections of a
keen-eyed observer of nature, both human and avian. The essays
follow the rivers and creeks, the highways and little-known byways
of Appalachia, and along the way we become nearly as familiar with
its numerous bird, plant, and animal species as with the author
himself.
In An Oubliette is a lyrical, evocative meditation on the awful consequences of war. It is told in poems which sometimes describe real battlefields, sometimes those of the heart. A story of many strands with voices from the Crusades, the Napoleonic Wars, the Second World War, and other conflicts. Narrated by a cast of characters from across the ages, some major figures from history, others part of the common mass of humanity.
Luis de Morales, known as El Divino because of his intensely religious subject matter, is the most significant and recognisable Spanish painter of the mid-sixteenth century, the high point of the Spanish and Portuguese counter-reformations. He spent almost his entire working life in the Spanish city of Badajoz, not far from the border with Portugal and did not travel outside of a small area around that city, covering both sides of the border. The social, political and cultural environment of Badajoz and its environs is crucial for a thorough understanding of his output. This book provides that context in detail, looking at literature and liturgical theatre, the situation of converted Jews and Muslims, the presence of Erasmianism, Lutheranism and Illuminism (Alumbradismo), devotional writing for lay people and proximity to the Braganca ducal palace in Portugal as a means of explaining this most enigmatic of painters.

A collection of short stories by 12 contemporary Spanish writers including Javier Cercas and Paloma Diaz-Mas. The settings vary from the exotic (Salome at the court of King Herod, the palace of a Moorish king with a half-mermaid daughter) to the historical (a little boy's experience of life in rural Spain under Franco), the fantastic (travelling the world through a labyrinth of built-in wardrobes) and the Chandleresque "film noir." Each of the stories follows a traveller or travellers, who, in the course of the tale, become lost to reality in some way, or alientated from their expectations and ideals. Sometimes these escapes are temporary, and the protagonist has to return to the everyday world. Sometimes they are permanent. Sometimes the travel is geographical as well as mental. In each case these fugues are metaphors; for contemporary Spanish life in some instances, for the whole of modern experience in others.
