The choice of location for the production plants of multinational
firms is an important issue, not least because this decision is
accompanied by so many fears brought into public debate. This book
analyses how foreign direct investors choose their locations,
whilst exploring the forces which shape international economic
geography. Although these two issues are, to some extent,
inter-related, researchers have only recently acknowledged the
similarity of economic geography and international business
approaches to the empirical assessment of likely causes of the
degree of spatial concentration observed in many modern industries.
Giving insight into the direction that future research should take,
this book contains state-of-the-art papers on both theoretical and
empirical levels. This original collection makes a particularly
important contribution to our understanding of the existence and
impact of home market effects. Introducing a welcome synthesis
between two related and yet rarely integrated areas of study using
case studies of firms in Europe, US MNEs and the Mexican automobile
industry, this book will be welcomed by both academic and
practising economists. Regional scientists and economists, and
those with a specific interest in international trade issues will
also find the book enlightening.
Multinational Firms and International Relocation addresses the
impact of inward foreign direct investment on the host country and
the extent to which it displaces jobs at home. Multinational firms
in the United States, Japan and the European Union are focused on
by a distinguished group of international business scholars who
include Giovanni Balcet, Pierre-Andre Buigues, Wong Yu Ching, John
H. Dunning, Edward M. Graham, F. Harianto, Thomas Hatzichronglou,
Alexis Jacquemin, Terutomo Ozawa, E. Safarian, Philippe Saucier,
Yoko Sazanami and Hideki Yamawaki. Issues addressed include
European industrial relocations in low wage countries, US direct
investments abroad, the strategies of Japanese multinationals, the
impact of foreign investment on the domestic manufacturing industry
of OECD countries, and multinationals and technology diffusion in
South East Asia. International business scholars, business
strategists and policy makers will welcome Multinational Firms and
International Relocation for the combination of insights and
analysis it offers on the strategies of multinational firms, the
impacts of their relocation policies and the evolution of the
delocalization debate.

Drawing on a range of contexts influenced by the Promise
Neighborhoods Program-a federal place-based initiative to improve
educational outcomes for students in distressed urban and rural
neighborhoods-this book outlines effective characteristics and
elements for implementing supplementary education. Chapter authors
demonstrate that the disparities in educational achievement between
white and non-white students can only be addressed by a holistic
approach that takes the communities in which schools are situated
as its focal point. This edited collection distills the insights
gained from the communities implementing such comprehensive
education programs and provides the framework and models for
reproducing such successes.
An intimate portrait of Picasso in never-before-seen photographs by
Edward Quinn, published 50 year's after the artist's passing. "He
doesn’t bother me," Picasso commented of the photographer Edward
Quinn, after the latter had first photographed him at work in the
ceramics studio in the early 1950s. This was undoubtedly one of the
reasons why Quinn was allowed to accompany the artist with his
Leica for over 20 years from 1951 onwards during his time on the
Côte d’Azur: in the studio, in private with his family, with
artist friends, at the bullfight, out and about, with lovers or
simply at the hairdresser’s. The Quinn Archive holds a large
stock of photographs of great intimacy, showing Picasso in everyday
life and documenting his idiosyncratic character, his humor, and
his enthusiasm in an amiable and light-hearted way. Edward Quinn
did not use a tripod with his camera, nor did he illuminate the
room artificially; his main concern was to capture genuine
pictures. As a viewer, you find yourself on eye level with the
protagonists. Almost like in the street photography we know today,
there is a captivating sense of the casual moment. This book is a
magical selection of photographs from Picasso’s everyday life and
shows the famous artist in many unexpected situations.
When it was originally published this book presented the first
independent review of the critical role played by multinationals in
Europe. Extending its focus beyond 1992, the book examines both the
economic and business strategy frameworks the firms need to develop
to maintain a competitive advantage. Using case-studies from
specific industries, it looks not only at the activity of
multinationals within the single market but explores the
competitive strategies of non-European firms with special emphasis
on Japanese companies which were poised to exploit 1992. The
importance of interaction between multinationals and national
government policies is also analysed taking into account the
integration already achieved.
Mobutu's political system, inaugurated in 1965 and lasting more
than three decades, met all the characteristics of totalitarianism.
This study shows that the failures and misdeeds of Mobutu's system
were clear evidence that it lacked an African-centred vision and
did not put the interests of the African people of Congo (formerly
Zaire) at the centre of this political project. In this study
Mobutu's political actions in the 1990s - mostly as they related to
the National Sovereign Conference - are critically analyzed and
found to be a deliberate attempt to obstruct the momentum of
democracy for the African people of Congo. From an Afro centric
standpoint, this obstruction is evidence of Mobutu's attempt to
impede the search for harmony and peace by the Zairian people, and
to reject the African-centred truth that without Ma'at (harmony)
there is no understanding and no possible restoration of balance.
Mobutu's Totalitarian Political System will be of interest to
students and scholars of ethnic studies, political science and
international relations.

"A jewel of Baroque architecture, the Castelluccio Palace is the
spotlight of a beautiful book retracing its history, its long
restoration and its precious ornaments. These photographs reflect
the Sicilian Golden Age." -Fanny Guenon des Mesnards, AD France
"This monograph is an invitation to visit the Palazzo Di Lorenzo
del Castelluccio."-Italian Vogue "A Palace in Sicily: A Masterpiece
Restored doesn't just pull back the curtain on the finished palace,
it details the four-year-long process through an elaborate array of
photos..." -Architectural Digest, and Yahoo With its sun-drenched
sands and Mediterranean waters, Sicily has been a favoured
destination of travellers for centuries. History is alive on this
island, from ancient accounts of the Greeks, Romans, Arabs and
Normans; to the journals of wealthy young European men embarking on
the Grand Tour. This book captures the sun-steeped aesthetic of the
island, while detailing the restoration of one of its finest
attractions: the Di Lorenzo del Castelluccio palace. Marquis de
Castelluccio was one of the last "servals" or "leopards" of Sicily
- wealthy aristocrats who flooded the island with luxury. Following
his death, his home fell to ruin. A half-century later, Jean-Louis
Remilleux fell in love with this dilapidated 18th-century palace
and made it his mission to restore it. Unveiled for the first time
in this beautifully illustrated book, the Di Lorenzo del
Castelluccio palazzo is one of the finest testaments to Sicilian
architecture and art. Today, lush green palm trees welcome you to
the palace's imposing front facade. Frescoes, arabesques, masks,
imitation marble, ceilings and wainscoting have all restored to
their former glory, over decades of elaborate work. This book
charts the restoration process and celebrates the astonishing end
results. It contains an album's worth of photographs that capture
the beauty of this palace beneath the Mediterranean sun.

Leadership has never been more important - and divisive - than it
is today. The idea and discourse of the leader remains a critical
factor in organizational and societal performance, but there is
evident tension between the persistent focus on the critical
importance of individual leaders and the increasing emphasis on
collective leadership. The Routledge Companion to Leadership
provides a survey of the contentious and dynamic discipline of
leadership. This collection covers key themes in the field,
including advances in leadership theory, leadership in a range of
contexts and geographies, leadership failure, leadership process,
and leadership development. Topics range from micro studies to
wider political analyses of leadership, taking in unusual but
important aspects such as portrayals of leadership in architecture,
media, and science fiction. Contributions from 61 internationally
renowned authors from 16 countries make available the full range of
perspectives, approaches, and insights on the idea of leadership.
Providing both a social sciences and a psychological approach,
these go beyond common themes to offer diverse perspectives on such
topics as emotion and leadership, portrayals of leadership. This
volume situates leadership debates and evidence within contemporary
leadership crises, while ensuring that the explorations of the
issues are of enduring relevance. With wide and critical coverage
of the key topics and potent contextualization of themes in current
events, The Routledge Companion to Leadership is the ideal resource
for graduate study in leadership.
Published to accompany the major exhibition at the Musee des Arts
Decoratifs, Paris, this book is destined to become a must-have work
of reference for all fashion lovers. The couturiere Elsa
Schiaparelli (1890-1973) was a key figure in Paris fashion between
the two World Wars. Following in the footsteps of her mentor Paul
Poiret, she designed her first knitwear collection in January 1927.
Decorated with trompe-l'oeil motifs in black and white, her
sweaters were an immediate success in both France and the USA. In
1935, the Maison Schiaparelli opened in the Place Vendome in Paris,
selling collections designed for sports, city and evening wear.
Like her arch-rival Gabrielle Chanel, Schiaparelli also worked
closely with artists, including Man Ray, Jean Cocteau and Salvador
Dali, with whom she created a lobster dress. Taking a cue from
Surrealism, her creations were hugely imaginative and made use of
innovative new materials. The 'Schiap' style continued to develop
through the 1930s. Her most famous collections had themes including
the circus (summer 1938) and astrology (winter 1938-39). In 1937,
Schiaparelli launched the fragrance Shocking, named after shocking
pink, which had become her signature colour. Alongside vintage
photographs, sketches and contemporary features from Harper's
Bazaar and Vogue, this volume presents specially photographed
masterpieces from the collection of the Musee des Arts Decoratifs
in Paris. All 120 garments and accessories from the Schiaparelli
archive are illustrated, along with a selection of her drawings
dating from 1933 to 1953.

The European Union is paradoxical: it is not a state, yet it
performs many traditional functions of the state. Its regulatory
powers are immense but its redistributive functions are negligible;
its decisions penetrate all aspects of economic and social life,
yet Brussels has no local administration or tribunals, no
controllers capable of guaranteeing the correct and faithful
implementation of the regulations or objectives which frame
European policies. Ths book explores the means through which this
paradox is confronted. It examines the nature and modalities of
policy-making at Community level and discusses the implications of
the specific nature of European institiutions for bargaining group
mobilization and policy style. It then studies how the three major
nation states have adjusted their policy processes and institutions
to the European challenges. Finally, it considers the impact of
community decisions in three areas: industrial, competition and
social policy.

Do you have an employee whose performance keeps
deteriorating--despite your close monitoring? Brace yourself: You
may be at fault--by unknowingly triggering the set-up-to-fail
syndrome. Perhaps things started off swimmingly. But then
something--a missed deadline, a lost client--made you question the
person's performance. You began micromanaging him. Suspecting your
reduced confidence, he started doubting himself--and stopped giving
his best. You viewed his new behavior as additional proof of
mediocrity, and tightened the screws further. In The Set-Up-to-Fail
Syndrome, Jean-Francois Manzoni and Jean-Louis Barsoux show how
this insidious cycle hurts everyone: employees stop volunteering
ideas, preventing your organization from getting the most from
them; you lose energy to attend to other activities; and your
reputation suffers as other employees deem you unfair. Team spirit
wilts as targeted performers are alienated. But the set-up-to-fail
syndrome doesn't have to happen. The authors provide preventive
measures, such as loosening the reins as new employees master their
jobs. If the syndrome has already erupted, Manzoni and Barsoux
explain how to discuss the dynamic with your employee and reverse
the cycle.

Research and theorizing on criminal decision making has not kept
pace with recent developments in other fields of human decision
making. Whereas criminal decision making theory is still largely
dominated by cognitive approaches such as rational choice-based
models, psychologists, behavioral economists and neuroscientists
have found affect (i.e., emotions, moods) and visceral factors such
as sexual arousal and drug craving, to play a fundamental role in
human decision processes. This book examines alternative approaches
to incorporating affect into criminal decision making and testing
its influence on such decisions. In so doing it generalizes extant
cognitive theories of criminal decision making by incorporating
affect into the decision process. In two conceptual and ten
empirical chapters it is carefully argued how affect influences
criminal decisions alongside rational and cognitive considerations.
The empirical studies use a wide variety of methods ranging from
interviews and observations to experimental approaches and
questionnaires, and treat crimes as diverse as street robbery,
pilfering, and sex offences. It will be of interest to
criminologists, social psychologists, judgment and decision making
researchers, behavioral economists and sociologists alike.
