Jeffrey Green
R1,799 Discovery Miles 17 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Black Edwardians reveals the presence of Black people in all walks of life across the British Isles at the height of the imperialist era. This hitherto undiscovered Black presence challenges conventional views on imperialism, racism and British social history. Historians of British society have largely ignored this most visible of minorities, and commentators on racism have been silent on the period.
Green uses contemporary newspapers, books and memoirs of the era (photographic evidence), archive documentation, the lively recollections of veterans (located by him in the 1980s), their family papers and comments of younger family associates. His work challenges our ideas of the recent past.

Swing from a Small Island - The Story of Leslie Thompson (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Leslie Thompson, Jeffrey Green Swing from a Small Island - The Story of Leslie Thompson (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Leslie Thompson, Jeffrey Green
R532 Discovery Miles 5 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The life story of a swing era trumpeter from Jamaica, a vivid and frank account of the remarkable life of 'a religious man with few axes to grind'. Leslie Thompson (1901 - 87) was born in Jamaica, raised there at Alpha Cottage School, and joined the West India Regiment as a bandsman. He moved permanently to England in 1929 and played in dance and jazz bands in clubs and theatres, toured with Louis Armstrong, and worked with the most significant black British swing musicians of the1930s, including the members of his all-black swing band which was taken over by Ken 'Snakehips' Johnson. Following a period in anti-aircraft defences in World War Two, he joined Stars in Battledress. When he saw the bombed ruins of Berlin he was reminded of Kingston after the earthquake of 1907. Post-war society club work and studies at the Guildhall then led to a spell as warden of the Alliance Club for students and later to work as a probation officer in London. He renewed his religious faith and had a wide range of friendships. Leslie Thompson's life was not without its tragedies. He provides a frank and vivid account of the many-sided realities of life as a West Indian in Britain in the 20th century. This book was first published in 1985 under the title: Leslie Thompson - An Autobiography.

"Using a rich diversity of approaches, these essays give voice to hitherto unheard stories and provide historical and theoretical frameworks in which to understand them. Reading the volume creates an exciting feeling of discovery."-Margaret Homans, Yale University Black Victorians/Black Victoriana is a welcome attempt to correct the historical record. Although scholarship has given us a clear view of nineteenth-century imperialism, colonialism, and later immigration from the colonies, there has for far too long been a gap in our understanding of the lives of blacks in Victorian England. Without that understanding, it remains impossible to assess adequately the state of the black population in Britain today. Using a transatlantic lens, the contributors to this book restore black Victorians to the British national picture. They look not just at the ways blacks were represented in popular culture but also at their lives as they experienced them-as workers, travelers, lecturers, performers, and professionals. Dozens of period photographs bring these stories alive and literally give a face to the individual stories the book tells. The essays taken as a whole also highlight prevailing Victorian attitudes toward race by focusing on the ways in which empire building spawned a "subculture of blackness" consisting of caricature, exhibition, representation, and scientific racism absorbed by society at large. This misrepresentation made it difficult to be both black and British while at the same time it helped to construct British identity as a whole. Covering many topics that detail the life of blacks during this period, Black Victorians/Black Victoriana will be a landmark contribution to the emergent field of black history in England. Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina is a professor of English at Vassar College. Her book Black London (Rutgers University Press) was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. She is also the author of Carrington, whose life story was made into a film starring Emma Thompson.

The Smile of the Human Bomb - New Perspectives on Suicide Terrorism (Hardcover): Gideon Aran The Smile of the Human Bomb - New Perspectives on Suicide Terrorism (Hardcover)
Gideon Aran; Translated by Jeffrey Green
R807 R662 Discovery Miles 6 620 Save R145 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 2017, nearly six thousand people were killed in suicide attacks across the world. In The Smile of the Human Bomb, Gideon Aran dissects the moral logic of the suicide terrorism that led to those deaths. The book is a firsthand examination of the bomb site at the moment of the explosion, during the first few minutes after the explosion, and in the last moments before the explosion. Aran uncovers the suicide bomber's final preparations before embarking on the suicide mission: the border crossing, the journey toward the designated target, penetration into the site, and the behavior of both sides within it. The book sheds light on the truth of the human bomb. Aran's gritty and often disturbing account is built on a foundation of participant observation with squads of pious Jewish volunteers who gather the scorched fragments of the dead after terrorist attacks; newly revealed documents, including interrogation protocols; interviews with Palestinian armed resistance members and retired Israeli counterterrorism agents; observations of failed suicide terrorists in jail; and conversations with the acquaintances of human bombs. The Smile of the Human Bomb provides new insights on the Middle East conflict, political violence, radicalism, victimhood, ritual, and death and unveils a suicide terrorism scene far different from what is conventionally pictured. In the end, Aran discovers, the suicide terrorist is an unremarkable figure, and the circumstances of his or her recruitment and operation are prosaic and often accidental. The smiling human bomb is neither larger than life nor a monster, but an actor on a human scale. And suicide terrorism is a drama in which cliches and chance events play their role.

When Jeffrey Greene, a prize-winning American poet, and Mary, a molecular biologist and his wife-to-be, discover a moss-covered stone presbytery in a lovely village in the Puisaye region of Burgundy, they know they have to live there. In lush, lyrical prose, Greene recalls their experiences turning the 300-year-old stone building -- a "château in miniature" that the locals believe houses numerous spirits-into a habitable refuge. He brings to life their adventures in finding wonderful bargains with which to furnish their new space, including a firm mattress and some rather suspicious antiques" bought from the back of a van.

Greene offers the unexpected joys and surprises of village life, from celebrating his and Mary's simple backyard wedding to toiling in a verdant garden. He shares the experience of surviving his mother's decision to move in and humorously introduces the locals -- both human and nonhuman -- who define his and Mary's new world.

Woven throughout this luscious tale are the pleasures of rural France: wondrous food and wine, long-held rituals and feasts, dark superstitions, and deeply rooted history.

Masters of Tonewood - The Hidden Art of Fine Stringed-Instrument Making (Hardcover): Jeffrey Greene, Strachan Literary Agency Masters of Tonewood - The Hidden Art of Fine Stringed-Instrument Making (Hardcover)
Jeffrey Greene, Strachan Literary Agency
R783 Discovery Miles 7 830 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The wood used by master craftsmen to create many of the world's legendary stringed instruments-violins and cellos, mandolins and guitars-comes from seven near-mythic European forests. In his latest book, Jeffrey Greene takes the reader into those woodlands and into luthiers' workshops to show us how the world's finest instruments not only contribute to great musical art but are prized works of art in themselves. Masters of Tonewood describes the "hidden life" of stringed instruments, beginning with the unique wood, expertly chosen and sometimes cured for decades, that gives them voices that rivet audiences. Greene takes us to forests in Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Romania, Poland, and the Czech Republic. We are introduced to the acoustical and aesthetic properties of the spruce that Stradivari treasured, and the mystery of why just one in a thousand maple trees contains decorative figuring worthy of the highest-quality instruments. Greene visits the greatest traditional centers of this craft, from Spain to the United States. He recounts the ideas and experiences of tonewood millers, luthiers, and musicians and discusses their concerns about environmental issues associated with a tradition dependent on ancient woodlands in a modern world.

The Gaon of Vilna - The Man and His Image (Hardcover): Immanuel Etkes The Gaon of Vilna - The Man and His Image (Hardcover)
Immanuel Etkes; Translated by Jeffrey Green
R1,856 Discovery Miles 18 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A legendary figure in his own lifetime, Rabbi Eliahu ben Shlomo Zalman (1720-1797) was known as the "Gaon of Vilna." He was the acknowledged master of Talmudic studies in the vibrant intellectual center of Vilna, revered throughout Eastern Europe for his learning and his ability to traverse with ease seemingly opposed domains of thought and activity. After his death, the myth that had been woven around him became even more powerful and was expressed in various public images. The formation of these images was influenced as much by the needs and wishes of those who clung to and depended on them as by the actual figure of the Gaon. In this penetrating study, Immanuel Etkes sheds light on aspects of the Vilna Gaon's "real" character and traces several public images of him as they have developed and spread from the early nineteenth century until the present.
