Against Meritocracy - Culture, power and myths of mobility (Hardcover): Jo Littler Against Meritocracy - Culture, power and myths of mobility (Hardcover)
Jo Littler
R3,873 Discovery Miles 38 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Meritocracy today involves the idea that whatever your social position at birth, society ought to offer enough opportunity and mobility for 'talent' to combine with 'effort' in order to 'rise to the top'. This idea is one of the most prevalent social and cultural tropes of our time, as palpable in the speeches of politicians as in popular culture. In this book Jo Littler argues that meritocracy is the key cultural means of legitimation for contemporary neoliberal culture - and that whilst it promises opportunity, it in fact creates new forms of social division. Against Meritocracy is split into two parts. Part I explores the genealogies of meritocracy within social theory, political discourse and working cultures. It traces the dramatic U-turn in meritocracy's meaning, from socialist slur to a contemporary ideal of how a society should be organised. Part II uses a series of case studies to analyse the cultural pull of popular 'parables of progress', from reality TV to the super-rich and celebrity CEOs, from social media controversies to the rise of the 'mumpreneur'. Paying special attention to the role of gender, 'race' and class, this book provides new conceptualisations of the meaning of meritocracy in contemporary culture and society.

Cultural Studies and Anti-Consumerism (Paperback): Sam Binkley, Jo Littler Cultural Studies and Anti-Consumerism (Paperback)
Sam Binkley, Jo Littler
R1,615 Discovery Miles 16 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Anti-consumerism has become a conspicuous part of contemporary activism and popular culture, from 'culture jams' and actions against Esso and Starbucks, through the downshifting and voluntary simplicity movements, the rise of ethical consumption and organic and the high profile of films and books like Supersize Me! and No Logo. A rising awareness of labor conditions in overseas plants, the environmental impact of intensified consumer lifestyles and the effects of neo-liberal privatization have all stimulated such popular cultural opposition. However, the subject of anti-consumerism has received relatively little theoretical attention - particularly from cultural studies, which is surprising given the discipline's historical investments in extending radical politics and exploring the complexities of consumer desire. This book considers how the expanding resources of contemporary cultural theory might be drawn upon to understand anti-consumerist identifications and practices; how railing against the social and cultural effects of consumerism has a complex past as well as present; and it pays attention to the interplays between the different movements of anti-consumerism and the particular modes of consumer culture in which they exist. In addition, as well as 'using' cultural studies to analyse anti-consumerism, it also asks how such anti-consumerist practices and discourse challenges some of the presumptions and positions currently held in cultural studies. This book was previously published as a special issue of Cultural Studies.

An Intergenerational Feminist Media Studies - Conflicts and connectivities (Paperback): Jessalynn Keller, Jo Littler, Alison... An Intergenerational Feminist Media Studies - Conflicts and connectivities (Paperback)
Jessalynn Keller, Jo Littler, Alison Winch
R1,181 Discovery Miles 11 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Feminism and generation are live and ideologically freighted issues that are subject to a substantial amount of media engagement. The figure of the millennial and the baby boomer, for example, regularly circulate in mainstream media, often accompanied by hyperbolic and vitriolic discourses and effects of intergenerational feminist conflict. In addition, theories of feminist generation and waves have been, and continue to be, extensively critiqued within feminist theory. Given the compelling criticisms directed at these categories, we ask: why bother examining and foregrounding issues of generation, intergeneration, and transgeneration in feminist media studies? While remaining skeptical of linearity and familial metaphors and of repeating reductive, heteronormative, and racist versions of feminist movements, we believe that the concept of generation does have critical purchase for feminist media scholars. Indeed, precisely because of the problematic ways in which it is used, and its prevalence as a volatile, yet only too palpable, organizing category, generation is in need of continual critical analysis, and is an important tool to be used-with care and nuance-when examining the multiple routes through which power functions in order to marginalize, reward, and oppress. This book covers a range of media forms: film; games; digital media; television; print media; and practices of media production, intervention, and representation. The contributors explore how figures at particular stages of life-particularly the girl and the aging woman-are constructed relationally and circulate within media, with particular attention to sexuality. The book emphasizes exploring the ways in which the category of generation is mobilized in order to gloss sexism, racism, ageism, class oppression, and the effects of neoliberalism. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Feminist Media Studies.

The Politics of Heritage - The Legacies of Race (Hardcover): Jo Littler, Roshi Naidoo The Politics of Heritage - The Legacies of Race (Hardcover)
Jo Littler, Roshi Naidoo
R3,895 Discovery Miles 38 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While 'social inclusion' and 'cultural diversity' circulate frenetically as buzzwords, are we really ready to accept that ideas about 'race' and 'ethnicity', rather than being a peripheral concern, are at the core of how a nation's heritage is represented and imagined? This book interrogates just whose past gets to count as part of 'British heritage'. Bringing together a wide range of contributors, including academics, practitioners, policy makers and curators, it examines how many different of types of heritage - from football to stately homes, experience attractions to education - deal with the complex legacies of the idea of 'race'. Whether exploring the fallout of colonialism, the domination of 'England' over the other three nations, holocaust memorials, or the way British heritage is negotiated overseas, a recurring theme of this book is the need to accept that Britain has always been a place of shifting ethnicities, shaped by waves of migration, diaspora and globalization. Analyzing both theory and practice, this book is concerned with understanding the processes through which changes to heritage happens, and with exploring problems and possibilities for the future.

Radical Consumption: Shopping for Change in Contemporary Culture (Paperback, Ed): Jo Littler Radical Consumption: Shopping for Change in Contemporary Culture (Paperback, Ed)
Jo Littler
R861 Discovery Miles 8 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ethical consumption, fair trade, consumer protests, brand backlashes, green goods, boycotts and downshifting: these are all now familiar consumer activities - and in some cases, are almost mainstream. They are part of the expanding field of 'radical consumption' in a world where we are encouraged to shop for change.

. . But just how radical are these forms of consumption? This book offers an interdisciplinary approach to examining contemporary radical consumption, analyzing its possibilities and problems, moralities, methods of mediation and its connections to wider cultural formations of production and politics.

. . Jo Littler argues that we require a more expansive vocabulary and to open up new approaches of enquiry in order to understand the area's many contradictions, strengths and weaknesses. Drawing on a number of contemporary theories, terms and debates in media and cultural studies, she uses a range of specific case studies to bring theory to life.

. . By analysing practices of radical consumption, the book explores a number of key questions: . . Is ethical consumption merely a sop for the middle classes?. What are the contradictions of green consumption?. Should we understand corporate social responsibility as a form of consumer-oriented greenwash? . Who benefits from the new forms of cosmopolitan caring consumption?. Can such forms of consumption ever move beyond their niche market status to become an effective political force? . Can we really buy our way to a better, more equitable or sustainable future? . . "Radical Consumption" is important reading for cultural, media and sociology students..
