This book focuses on the spread of public and private environmental
and food safety regulations from Europe and North America to Asia
and Africa. It explores the growth of policy diffusion and standard
alignment on sustainability observed in non-Western follower
countries in a globalizing world. The book examines the role of
both developed and developing non-Western countries as followers
that adopt food safety, environmental and sustainability policies
under different conditions to those of the originating country.
Chapters analyse non-state forms of transnational regulation, and
how these have diffused to non-Western countries. They showcase how
standard alignment efforts lead to multiple localized regulations
determined by specific circumstances, highlighting the dilemma in
designing policy in an era of globalization. The use of in-depth
case studies by renowned experts will make this book an important
read for political science and economics scholars interested in
trade, standards and international regulation. Policy-makers
concerned with issues of sustainability in follower countries will
find the book's lessons on how to adapt policies helpful.
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

Marine Protected Areas: Science, Policy and Management addresses a
full spectrum of issues relating to Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
not currently available in any other single volume. Chapters are
contributed by a wide range of working specialists who examine
conceptions and definitions of MPAs, progress on the implementation
of worldwide MPAs, policy and legal variations across MPAs, the
general importance of coastal communities in implementation, and
the future of MPAs. The book constructively elucidates conflicts,
issues, approaches and solutions in a way that creates a balanced
consideration of the nature of effective policy and management.
Those in theory, designation, implementation or management of MPAs,
from individuals, marine sector organizations, and university and
research center libraries will find it an important work.
Recrystallization and Related Annealing Phenomena, Third Edition,
fulfills the information needs of materials scientists in both
industry and academia. The subjects treated in the book are all
active research areas, forming a major part of at least four
regular international conference series. This new third edition
ensures the reader has access to the latest findings, and is
essential reading to those working in the forefront of research in
universities and laboratories. For those in industry, the book
highlights applications of the research and technology, exploring,
in particular, the significant progress made recently in key areas
such as deformed state, including deformation to very large
strains, the characterization of microstructures by electron
backscatter diffraction, the modeling and simulation of annealing,
and continuous recrystallization.
More photos are taken than ever before, but most are neglected and
unused. This book suggests new creative directions and explains how
you can produce distinctive and exciting works of art. Packed with
technical advice and in-depth practical detail, it shows you how to
use cameras and equipment for experimental photography. There are
ideas on how to develop a creative eye and a personal photographic
style. It explains when to use the rules of composition, and when
to break them and shows you how to create amazing pictures from
everyday objects. It provides inspiration, ideas and techniques for
making abstract and pattern pictures, and using textures for
artistic impact. Finally, it advises on using software to convert
pictures to artwork and how to present art images for maximum
effect. Through step-by-step guides and stunning examples, it also
helps you create images that tell a personal story. It's an
essential guide to help you take photos that count, not just click
away.
This insightful research review discusses some of the most
influential papers in the economics field of global value chains.
Focusing on globalization, fragmentation and coordination of
production across geographical as well as enterprise boundaries. It
pays particularly close attention to how businesses in developing
countries are incorporated into global production and distribution
networks. The review analyses many of the texts that framed the
global value chain approach together with in-depth case-studies of
particular sectors and policy-oriented research concerned with
reducing poverty and accelerating growth in poorer countries. This
review would be of great interest to students and researchers
working in the fields of globalisation, geography and international
business.
Poole Harbour is protected and recognised, nationally and
internationally, for its ecological importance. However, it has
also been classified as polluted and eutrophic. These twin
designations - protected yet polluted - exemplify the condition of
many estuaries, making Poole Harbour an ideal subject for
elucidating the circumstances behind this apparent paradox. The
outcome of a conference entitled 'Spotlight on Poole Harbour:
Environment & Economics' organised by the Poole Harbour Study
Group, this book comprises four main parts. Part I, 'Background',
provides a broad introduction to the harbour in terms of its
pre-historical and historical significance for human communities
and gives a conceptual overview of its modern character and uses.
Part II, 'Ecology', contains chapters ranging from plankton to
marine mammals. The subsequent parts focus on industries dependent
on the biological and chemical 'ecological services' of the
estuary: Part III, 'Fisheries', covers recreational and commercial
fishing and aquaculture, examining economic value and key shellfish
species. Part IV, 'Water Quality', addresses those industries that
require the harbour to remediate various effluents, as well as some
of the environmental consequences and noteworthy efforts to reduce
such impacts. Part V, 'Conclusion', by the editors examines certain
general shortcomings of environmental legislation and regulation
manifest in the case of Poole Harbour. A central concern throughout
is the question of sustainable development in coastal and marine
contexts, making this wide-ranging study relevant well beyond the
bounds of its primary geographical focus.
Electron Microscopy and Analysis deals with several sophisticated
techniques for magnifying images of very small objects by large
amounts - especially in a physical science context. It has been ten
years since the last edition of Electron Microscopy and Analysis
was published and there have been rapid changes in this field since
then. The authors have vastly updated their very successful second
edition, which is already established as an essential laboratory
manual worldwide, and they have incorporated questions and answers
in each chapter for ease of learning. Equally as relevant for
material scientists and bioscientists, this third edition is an
essential textbook.
This book and its accompanying Teacher's Pack are the result of a
project, supported by the Nuffield Foundation, to provide flexible
learning materials for the Basic Application of Number core skill
for both the NVQs and GNVQ in construction and the construction
crafts. The student book uses a unique approach to explain how
mathematical principles apply to construction tasks. Each chapter
forms an individual construction project and uses the full range of
number skills from the fundamentals of addition and subtraction to
statistics, trigonometry and technical drawing. Successfully
completed projects provide the student with the required portfolio
of evidence for their course. Notes throughout the text refer the
student to the relevant module in the Teacher's Pack, which
contains assessments, tests and detailed explanations of the number
skills needed to complete the projects.
This book evaluates the evolution of regulatory policy in advanced
countries and discusses how, due to globalization, policy changes
in one country have a knock-on effect in others. Separated in two
parts, the first half focuses on policy in developed countries and
regulatory diffusion from Europe to Asia. The second part looks at
the business impact of policy developments in a number of Southeast
Asian countries. Key chapters discuss Thailand's response to EU
chemical regulations, the diffusion of private food standards, and
the effect of chemical safety standards in Malaysia and Vietnam.
These contributions are written by leading scholars in the field
and the book is likely to be of interest to students, researchers
and policy makers concerned with regulation changes in East Asia.

A case study of the largest industrial concentration in Latin
America, this work shows how the unique situation of auto workers
led them to articulate demands relevant for the whole working
class. By exploring a concrete situation in two specific plants,
the author clarifies the nature of work in modern industry.
