Facadism - the preservation of historic facades, the creation of facsimiles in front of new buildings and the decorative exercises of postmodernism - is accused of destroying architectural innovation, of divorcing the interior and exterior of buildings and of reducing townscapes to theatre sets. Its defenders describe facadism as the way urban tradition and progress walk hand in hand. Facadism presents a critical analysis of a concept central to the way in which the city is being remodelled. Assessing architectural and townscape philosophies and their aesthetics, the principles of urban conservation, the process of heritage planning and the market forces of urban development, the book builds a complete picture of the causes and effects of facadism in the Twentieth Century. eBook available with sample pages: 020303354X

An ordinary day is about to spell disaster for Flight
Three-Alpha-Nine. [Author's note: not actually spell disaster, it's
not like an anagram or anything. 'Ride tass' is an anagram of
disaster but that bears no relation to anything in the story. Look
it's probably best we forget this whole blurb bit - it's already
gone awry with the whole anagram thing - best you just read the
book to find out what it's about...
The year is 2146 and the term 'Canaries' refers to death-row
convicts sent into hostile situations by the military. When a
geological surveying station comes under attack a Canary team is
sent in, but the survivors soon learn they have more to fear from
the Canaries than the creature attacking them.
Theresa Robbins is a New York cop, single mother and Brooklynite.
These are three non-consecutive days in May and the events and
thoughts that fill them. Life as a street cop is anything but dull.
There's that which makes you laugh, that which beggars belief and
that which you wish you never saw.
Many high-energy collider experiments (including the current Large
Hadron Collider at CERN) involve the collision of hadrons. Hadrons
are composite particles consisting of partons (quarks and gluons),
and this means that in any hadron-hadron collision there will
typically be multiple collisions of the constituents - i.e.
multiple parton interactions (MPI). Understanding the nature of the
MPI is important in terms of searching for new physics in the
products of the scatters, and also in its own right to gain a
greater understanding of hadron structure. This book aims at
providing a pedagogical introduction and a comprehensive review of
different research lines linked by an involvement of MPI phenomena.
It is written by pioneers as well as young leading scientists, and
reviews both experimental findings and theoretical developments,
discussing also the remaining open issues.
