R3,872 Discovery Miles 38 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years our understanding of corporate sustainability has moved from exploitation to exploration, from corporate environmental management to sustainable entrepreneurship, and from efficiency to innovation. Yet current trends indicate the need for radical innovation via entrepreneurial start-ups or new ventures within existing corporations despite difficulties with the financing and marketing of such efforts. Presenting both conceptual and empirical research, this fascinating book addresses how we can combine environmental and social sustainability with economic sustainability in order to produce innovative new business models. The international cast of contributors addresses the wide range of issues in the balance between growth and environmental concerns. The first five chapters discuss various aspects of sustainable entrepreneurship. This is followed by two chapters that look at innovation within existing firms. Innovation is not successful until it finds a customer, so the two chapters that follow delve into the marketing aspects of business-to-consumer and business-to-business settings. The book closes with a broad discussion of the evolution and future of the research agenda into the intersection of sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship. Academics, students, business professionals, and NGOs will find this volume enlightening and useful.

R1,063 R994 Discovery Miles 9 940 Save R69 (6%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This volume investigates performance cultures as rich and dynamic environments of knowledge practice through which distinctive epistemologies are continuously (re)generated, cultivated, and celebrated. Epistemologies are dynamic formations of rules, tools, and procedures not only for understanding but also for doing knowledges. This volume deals in particular with epistemological challenges posed by practices and processes of interweaving performance cultures. These challenges arise in artistic and academic contexts because of hierarchies between epistemologies. European colonialism worked determinedly, violently, and often with devastating effects on instituting and sustaining a hegemony of modern Euro-American rules of knowing in many parts of the world. Therefore, Interweaving Epistemologies critically interrogates the (im)possibilities of interweaving epistemologies in artistic and academic contexts today. Writing from diverse geographical locations and knowledge cultures, the book's contributors-philosophers, political scientists as well as practitioners and scholars of theater, performance, and dance-investigate prevailing forms of epistemic ignorance and violence. They introduce key concepts and theories that enable critique of unequal power relations between epistemologies. Moreover, contributions explore historical cases of interweaving epistemologies and examine innovative present-day methods of working across and through epistemological divides in non-hegemonic, sustainable, creative, and critical ways. Ideal for practitioners, students and researchers of theater, performance, and dance as well as of philosophy and history (of science), Interweaving Epistemologies emphasizes the urgent need to acknowledge, study and promote epistemological plurality and diversity in practices of performance making as well as in scholarship on theater and performance around the globe today.

Pentagons and Pentagrams - An Illustrated History (Hardcover): Eli Maor, Eugen Jost Pentagons and Pentagrams - An Illustrated History (Hardcover)
Eli Maor, Eugen Jost
R530 Discovery Miles 5 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A fascinating exploration of the pentagon and its role in various cultures The pentagon and its close cousin, the pentagram, have inspired individuals for the last two and half millennia, from mathematicians and philosophers to artists and naturalists. Despite the pentagon's wide-ranging history, no single book has explored the important role of this shape in various cultures, until now. Richly illustrated, Pentagons and Pentagrams offers a sweeping view of the five-sided polygon, revealing its intriguing geometric properties and its essential influence on a variety of fields. Traversing time, Eli Maor narrates vivid stories, both celebrated and unknown, about the pentagon and pentagram. He discusses the early Pythagoreans, who ascribed to the pentagon mythical attributes, adopted it as their emblem, and figured out its construction with a straightedge and compass. Maor looks at how a San Diego housewife uncovered four previously unknown types of pentagonal tilings, and how in 1982 a scientist's discovery of fivefold symmetries in certain alloys caused an uproar in crystallography and led to a Nobel Prize. Maor also discusses the pentagon's impact on many buildings, from medieval fortresses to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Eugen Jost's superb illustrations provide sumptuous visual context, and the book's puzzles and mazes offer fun challenges for readers, with solutions given in an appendix.

With the rapidly growing importance of sustainability and corporate responsibility in a globalised world, management schools are increasingly integrating long-term economic, environmental and social issues into their teaching and research. Climate change, poverty, labour standards and human rights are among the many topics that future decision-makers will need to face in their careers. Business education needs to reflect this new reality and provide a broadened understanding of value creation in order to create economic capital while developing social and preserving natural capital. Many sustainability trends also offer interesting new business opportunities that are ripe for entrepreneurial thinking. Case studies can be important tools for creating learning processes on different levels - students are forced to struggle with exactly the kinds of decisions and dilemmas managers confront every day. In this reflection of reality, the values and goals of the student are systematically challenged. This can be especially valuable in the context of sustainability and strategy - organisations are now continually forced to value the different aspects of sustainability and their interrelations: How do social issues impact the economic bottom line? How can an environmentally sound strategy create a positive impact on employee motivation and thus have measurable impact on economic performance? What comes first and why? But excellent case studies for management education in the field of sustainability management and strategy are rare. This innovative collection has been produced to fill this gap. It is based on the winning cases of an annual competition organised by oikos - the international Student Organization for Sustainable Economics and Management. So what makes an excellent case in sustainability management? These cases have been highly praised because they provide excellent learning opportunities, tell engaging stories, deal with recent situations, include quotations from key actors, are thought-provoking and controversial, require decision-making and provide clear take-aways. These cases explore both the opportunities and pitfalls companies and NGOs face in targeting sustainability issues and how their values and core assumptions impact their business strategies. They deal with a myriad of issues including supply chain management, stakeholder dialogue, social entrepreneurship, sustainable marketing, ethics, governance, the business case for sustainability, partnerships, purchasing and climate change. Case Studies in Sustainability Management and Strategy is an essential purchase for educators and is likely to be a widely used as a course textbook at all levels of management education.Online Teaching Notes to accompany each chapter are available on request with the purchase of the book.

Bible in China - The History of the Union Version or the Culmination of Protestant Missionary Bible Translation in China... Bible in China - The History of the Union Version or the Culmination of Protestant Missionary Bible Translation in China (Hardcover)
Jost Oliver Zetzsche
R4,173 Discovery Miles 41 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Union Version, China's preeminent and most widely used translation of the Bible, had achieved the status of a sacred Chinese classic within the Chinese Church not long after its publication in 1919. Jost Zetzsche's monograph on this remarkable translation traces the historical and linguistic background that led to the decision to translate the Union Version, with detailed analyses of the translation efforts that preceeded it. Special attention is given to the cooperation and confrontation among Protestant denominations as well as the rising prominence of the Chinese translators as these groups attempted to form a cohesive translation of the Bible. This is set against the background of the development of the Chinese language during the 30-year translation process, both in the perception of the translators and in the country at large.

Strategic Conflict Management - A Game-Theoretical Introduction (Paperback): Peter-J. Jost, Utz Weitzel Strategic Conflict Management - A Game-Theoretical Introduction (Paperback)
Peter-J. Jost, Utz Weitzel
R884 Discovery Miles 8 840 Out of stock

Whenever a group of individuals comes together and interact in order to reach a common goal, differing individual preferences can lead to conflict. This book focuses on the management of these internal conflicts within business organizations. Peter-J. Jost and Utz Weitzel analyze organizational conflicts and illustrate how the parties involved utilize strategic actions to achieve a desired outcome in conflict. The authors use numerous examples of internal conflicts that are well-known to both practitioners and academics to define and explain the basic concepts of game theory. They then focus on the management of conflict, highlighting how the strategic behavior of conflicting parties can be influenced by direct governance or by changing organizational framework parameters. In contrast to much of the existing literature in this field, the focus is not on formal definitions or mathematical proofs, but solely on the application of game theory to strategic conflict management. This book represents a valuable tool in the assessment of organizational conflicts from a fresh, strategic perspective underpinned by game theory. It will therefore prove fascinating reading for scholars and practitioners with an interest in a broad range of fields encompassing business and management, strategic management, organizational studies, human resource management and game theory.

The Economics of Motivation and Organization - An Introduction (Paperback): Peter-J. Jost The Economics of Motivation and Organization - An Introduction (Paperback)
Peter-J. Jost
R1,398 Discovery Miles 13 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this unique book, Peter-J. Jost provides a comprehensive economic-psychological approach for successfully managing employees. The author considers the employee as the ?building block? holding economic organizations together, and outlines how their personal circumstances, behavior and working conditions affect motivation. The influence of individual decision-making processes and psychological factors on behavior in the workplace is also discussed. Theoretical insights are underpinned by a range of case studies, and the impact of inadequate leadership on firms is highlighted. Motivation problems within organizations are evaluated and potential solutions prescribed. This book will prove an insightful and fascinating read for researchers, students and practitioners wishing to develop a deeper understanding of the myriad factors that affect the motivation of employees within an organization.

Science after the Practice Turn in the Philosophy, History, and Social Studies of Science (Paperback): Lena Soler, Sjoerd... Science after the Practice Turn in the Philosophy, History, and Social Studies of Science (Paperback)
Lena Soler, Sjoerd Zwart, Michael Lynch, Vincent Israel-Jost
R1,460 Discovery Miles 14 600 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In the 1980s, philosophical, historical and social studies of science underwent a change which later evolved into a turn to practice. Analysts of science were asked to pay attention to scientific practices in meticulous detail and along multiple dimensions, including the material, social and psychological. Following this turn, the interest in scientific practices continued to increase and had an indelible influence in the various fields of science studies. No doubt, the practice turn changed our conceptions and approaches of science, but what did it really teach us? What does it mean to study scientific practices? What are the general lessons, implications, and new challenges? This volume explores questions about the practice turn using both case studies and theoretical analysis. The case studies examine empirical and mathematical sciences, including the engineering sciences. The volume promotes interactions between acknowledged experts from different, often thought of as conflicting, orientations. It presents contributions in conjunction with critical commentaries that put the theses and assumptions of the former in perspective. Overall, the book offers a unique and diverse range of perspectives on the meanings, methods, lessons, and challenges associated with the practice turn.

The Contested Diplomacy of the European External Action Service - Inception, Establishment and Consolidation (Paperback):... The Contested Diplomacy of the European External Action Service - Inception, Establishment and Consolidation (Paperback)
Jost-Henrik Morgenstern-Pomorski
R1,293 Discovery Miles 12 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The creation of the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU's new diplomatic body, was accompanied by high expectations for improving the way Europe would deal with foreign policy. However, observers of its first years of operation have come to the opposite conclusion. This book explains why the EEAS, despite being hailed as a milestone in integration in Europe's foreign policy, has fallen short of the mark. It does so by enlisting American institutionalist approaches to European questions of institutional creation, bureaucratic organisations and change. The book examines the peculiar shape the EEAS's organisation has taken, what political factors determined that shape and design and how it has operated. Finally, it looks at the autonomous operation of the EEAS from a bureaucratic theory perspective, concluding that this is the best way to understand its course. Including data gathered from elite interviews of politicians and senior officials involved in the institutional process, an assessment of official documentary evidence and a survey of EEAS officials at the organisation's beginning, it sheds new light on a controversial tool in the EU's foreign policy. This text will be of key interest to scholars and students of European Union foreign policy, public administration, and more broadly to European Union and European politics, as well as to practitioners within those fields.
