The past decade has seen an explosion of interest in civics and citizenship education. There have been unprecedented developments in citizenship education taking place in schools, adult education centers, or in the less formally structured spaces of media images and commentary around the world. This book provides an overview of the development of civics and citizenship education policy across a range of nation states. This book argues that educators and the general public have become complacent about girls' education as a consequence of the more recent fuss about problems for boys. After an analysis of persistent disquiet about girls' lifestyles, it uses theories of gender and education to demonstrate that girls are being produced in contradictory ways in current schooling. Many girls develop a sense of themselves through close connection with friendship groups but schooling processes typically require them to adopt the position of competitors in the end-of-school rankings and to act out their individualized positions in imagining themselves into the future. Ultimately the work offers insight and understanding leading to a less divisive educational pathway for girls.

Walking on the Grass brings to life women's experiences during their doctoral study and the experiences of women who supervise doctoral students. Sensations, reflections, and imaginations emerge through memories, histories, and different ways of narrating academic journeys. This book examines in depth, the emotional and embodied nature of writing, supervising, and inter-subjective learning. It makes visible ethics of care required in that liminal space in which supervisors and doctoral scholars work to shape and give confidence to the becoming academic. The book works through the politics of gender, sexuality, age, class, and ethnicity to understand meanings inherent in doctoral and supervisory relationships, reasons for entering academe, and how academic writing obtains form and content. The significance of the book is its contribution to understanding academic thesis writing as complex emotional and embodied gendered labor rather than an instrumental activity in which to earn the title of Doctor of Philosophy.

Knowing Our Place examines the way in which children view their world. It poses questions of citizenship and how children come to a sense of belonging in their community of nation, family, classroom, and school. The book describes and analyzes the responses of more than 400 children to a series of open-ended questions. While the fundamental aim of the book is to identify and describe aspects of children's thinking as they grapple with their developing sense of being in the world, there are evident implications for the project of citizenship education.
