Bertram Kaschek, Jurgen Muller, Jessica Buskirk
R4,397 Discovery Miles 43 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Religion offers new insight into the religious dimension of Bruegel's art. With a number of highly original and thorough case studies, the volume illuminates Bruegel's inventive and multifaceted engagement with the contemporary religious concepts and practices of his day and age. Religion remains a vital question in the life and career of Bruegel, because it was so long believed to be more or less absent from his work. As a pioneer of the new genres of landscape and peasant scenes, Bruegel was heralded as a ground-breaking "secular" painter. This volume highlights the most recent scholarship on the artist, offering a much more nuanced portrait of Bruegel's engagement with the dynamic religious landscape of the mid-sixteenth century. Contributors are: Jessica Buskirk, Ralph Dekoninck, Bertram Kaschek, Walter S. Melion, Jurgen Muller, Anna Pawlak, Gerd Schwerhoff, Larry Silver, and Michel Weemans.

The research presented in this book discusses how to efficiently retrieve track and trace information for an item of interest that took a certain path through a complex network of manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers. To this end, a super-ordinate system called "Discovery Service" is designed that has to handle large amounts of data, high insert-rates, and a high number of queries that are submitted to the discovery service. An example that is used throughout this book is the European pharmaceutical supply chain, which faces the challenge that more and more counterfeit medicinal products are being introduced. Between October and December 2008, more than 34 million fake drug pills were detected at customs control at the borders of the European Union. These fake drugs can put lives in danger as they were supposed to fight cancer, take effect as painkiller or antibiotics, among others. The concepts described in this book can be adopted for supply chain management use cases other than track and trace, such as recall, supply chain optimization, or supply chain analytics.

Hitler's war in the East was the central event of World War II. It was in Eastern Europe where the bloodiest battles took place, and where the Nazis committed their greatest crimes. Hitler intended the conquest, exploitation and settlement of Lebensraum in the East to be the key to final victory and the establishment of Germany as a world power. It was in the East where World War II was finally decided and Hitler's Wehrmacht smashed. As a result of this war, the USSR rose to become a world power. For almost 40 years the myth of the Great Fatherland war was the most important link to binding the Soviet empire together. The myth of Stalin as the saviour of Russia allowed the crimes of the 1930s to be forgotten for many years. Only today are historical events beginning to be remembered as they really were; a process driven forward by the revolutionary changes taking place in the USSR.

Catherine Tessier, Laurent Chaudron, Heinz-Jurgen Muller
R5,331 Discovery Miles 53 310 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Conflicts between agents acting in a multi-agent environment arise for different reasons, involve different concepts, and are dealt with in different ways, depending on the kind of agents and on the domain where they are considered. Agents may have conflicting beliefs, conflicting goals, or may have to share limited resources. Consequently, conflicts may be expressed as mere differences, or as contradictions, or even as social conflicts. They may be avoided, solved, kept, or even created deliberately. Conflicting Agents studies conflicts in the context of multi-agent systems, i.e. artificial societies modeled on the basis of autonomous, interacting agents. This book addresses questions about types of conflicts, conflict definitions and the use of conflicts as trigger functions for activities in multi-agent systems. The book is also dedicated to questions of conflict management, resolution and avoidance, i.e. the question of how agents cope with conflicts and conflicting situations.

The life and times of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30-1569) were marked by stark cultural conflict. He witnessed religious wars, the Duke of Alba's brutal rule as governor of the Netherlands, and the palpable effects of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where nor exactly when he was born. But while early scholarship emphasized the vernacular character of his painting and graphic work, modern research has attached greater importance to its humanistic content. Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that were distributed throughout Europe. These depicted vices and virtues alongside jolly peasant festivals and sweeping landscape panoramas. He then increasingly turned to painting, working for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. Rather than idealizing reality, he bravely confronted the issues of his day, addressing the horrors of religious warfare and taking a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, Bruegel developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions. This book is derived from our XXL monograph, which saw TASCHEN undertake a comprehensive photographic survey of the artist's oeuvre. The result boasts exceptional details and reproductions, unveiling Bruegel's larger-than-life universe with unprecedented clarity. This volume, in celebration of our 40th anniversary, presents all 40 paintings, accompanied by enlarged details and accessible, immersive texts. About the series TASCHEN is 40! Since we started our work as cultural archaeologists in 1980, TASCHEN has become synonymous with accessible publishing, helping bookworms around the world curate their own library of art, anthropology, and aphrodisia at an unbeatable price. Today we celebrate 40 years of incredible books by staying true to our company credo. The 40 series presents new editions of some of the stars of our program-now more compact, friendly in price, and still realized with the same commitment to impeccable production.

The break-up of BAA and the blocked takeover of Bratislava airport by the competing Vienna airport have brought the issue of airport competition to the top of the agenda for air transport policy in Europe. Airport Competition reviews the current state of the debate and asks whether airport competition is strong enough to effectively limit market power. It provides evidence on how travellers chose an airport, thereby altering its competitive position, and on how airports compete in different regions and markets. The book also discusses the main policy implications of mergers and subsidies.

Cinema has likely never been written off so often. In the decade of the 2010s, it is true, much has changed - both in how we watch movies, and in how we see ourselves. Social media and the internet have shaped a new understanding of the self and the world. As streaming services multiplied our viewing options and video games offered alluring realities of their own, the big screen faced serious competition. Even before the usual delays between theatrical release and further distribution became ever shorter, movies often found themselves downgraded to mere "content", to be clicked at on colorful screen tiles. Are all that remain to cinema its cult of celebrity, blockbusters, and computer-animated visual effects? Quite the contrary - even a cursory glance at our anthology reveals a cinema that is surprisingly diverse, dynamic, and above all alive and kicking, resulting in a decade that was anything but boring, monotonous, and doomed to extinction. And in all honesty: Would you really be satisfied watching all the films compiled here purely via streaming? The movie theater remains a place of yearning, and our book lets you feel its powerful breath. Each of the 100 most compelling movies of the decade is discussed in detail by editor Jurgen Muller and his team of authors, and illustrated with a wealth of visual material. The volume also includes biographies of actors and directors, box-office takings, background information, and a comprehensive list of Oscar (R) winners from 2012 to 2021. For Jurgen Muller and Philipp Buhler in their wide-ranging introduction, Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (2019) offers the perfect metaphor for the contradictions and ambivalences of contemporary cinema. This volume is a new milestone for all cineastes and movie lovers!

Mehr noch: der Einfluss transnationaler Wirkkrafte wie Konfessionen, Ideologien, aber auch soziookonomische und kulturelle Herausforderungen auf die deutsch-franzosischen Beziehungen werden analysiert. Rembrandt'S Mark (Paperback): Stephanie Buck, Jurgen Muller Rembrandt'S Mark (Paperback)
Stephanie Buck, Jurgen Muller
R1,089 Discovery Miles 10 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Dresden collection's singular group of Rembrandt works - about 20 drawings attributed to the master today and the nearly complete oeuvre of etchings- will provide the basis for this remarkable publication. It will have a particular focus on Rembrandt's narrative compositions, printed self-portraits, studies of his wife Saskia, and will include works from all periods of his oeuvre plus prints and drawings by artists from his workshop and followers. The list of artists who understood Rembrandt as a dynamic authority and source of inspiration is long, reaching from his immediate followers to masters of the 18th century, from Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione to Jonathan Richardson to the kindred spirit Francisco de Goya, into the 20th century and up to the present day. Examples include Edouard Manet, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Lovis Corinth, Kathe Kollwitz, Max Beckmann, Pablo Picasso, as well as Marlene Dumas and William Kentridge and artists from the GDR such as A.R. Penck. By including works by these artists, the exhibtion and catalogue foreground Rembrandt as one of the most important 'artists' artist' of all time. Select juxtapositions will help the reader better understand the fi reworks of creativity that Rembrandt not only lit in his own time but those he continues to ignite today. Rembrandt remains eternally captivating, not only because of his radical choices and unconventional interpretations of Christian and profane pictorial subjects, but also because of his joy in experimentation, especially in the use of printing and drawing techniques, and his refl ective, humorous intellect, complemented by his sensually direct approach to the world. With a light hand, he broke open the conventions of his era. The pictorial worlds that he created with his free, decisive mark convey his near inexhaustible interest in nature as creation, whether it be the human exterior or interior, and off er a wealth of connecting points and constellations for other artists as well as for the viewer.
