The enemy is in our waters . . .
July 1941
Having left England to join his father in the South Africa, Lieutenant
Jack Pembroke has found a new home – and a new love – in Cape Town and
is put in command of a small, anti-submarine flotilla at the Royal Navy
base in Simonstown. He has precious little time to train his men, and
prepare his ships, for the arrival of deadly Nazi wolf packs – U-boats
sent by Admiral Dönitz from bases in France to cripple the Cape convoy
route. With the Mediterranean all-but closed to maritime traffic, and
Rommel’s forces rampaging through North Africa, this sea route is vital
to supplying Allied forces in Egypt at a critical point in World War II.
Everything will hang in the balance with the arrival of the enemy in
South African waters. Gruppe Savanne comprises five long-range Uboats
under the command of Fregattenkapitän Wolfgang Brand, a hardened
veteran, who will stretch the Cape’s defences to the limit. On board he
carries a South African spy and ardent Nazi, who is to be landed on the
West Coast to start a campaign of sabotage, assassination and rebellion
bent on toppling the pro-British government of Prime Minister Jan Smuts.
With the spy safely ashore, and the Cape Peninsula under attack, Jack
must now escort a convoy to Durban with the U-boat pack lying in wait.
So begins a cat-and-mouse game that will push Jack and his men to
breaking point. The Wolf Hunt is the second book in the thrilling Jack
Pembroke series, each of which is a stand-alone story.

“Let us, then, set off together on a series of journeys around South Africa with an old kitbag full of books instead of maps to guide us. Let us follow meandering paths through the landscapes of literature, and celebrate how local authors, characters and readers are shaped and inspired by place …”
In this gripping travelogue, Justin Fox goes on a one-of-a-kind journey. Marrying his love for travel and writing, he sets off to explore the places of his favourite books. From the mountainous eastern Karoo of Olive Schreiner to the big-game lowveld of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, from Deneys Reitz’s wide-open Cape interior to the bushveld of Eugène Marais’s Waterberg, Fox reveals the majestic power of place. Through the savannah of Herman Charles Bosman’s Marico, the dusty plains of JM Coetzee’s Moordenaars Karoo, the forests of Dalene Matthee’s Garden Route, the subtropical hamlets of Zakes Mda’s Wild Coast, and finally the sandstone crags of Stephen Watson’s Cederberg, he brings to life the settings we’ve only seen through characters’ eyes.
Place is a moving love letter to South Africa, merging literature and landscape, and taking the reader on a breath-taking journey – into the heart of South Africa’s spectacular landscape and the inner-worlds of its most celebrated authors.

The Blindside meets Friday Night Lights in Keanon Lowe's Hometown
Victory when an NFL coach returns home after losing a friend to
coach a team of struggling high school kids on a 23-game losing
streak. Keanon Lowe was working as an offensive analyst for the San
Francisco 49ers when his childhood friend and former high school
teammate suddenly died from an opioid overdose. Keanon dropped
everything--including the plum NFL job he had been working towards
since childhood--leading him to a position as football coach at a
struggling high school back in his hometown. At the time, Parkrose
High School was in the middle of a 23-game losing streak--they were
the ultimate underdogs. In many ways, the road to Parkrose was
paved by Keanon's life-defining experiences--from a childhood spent
dodging racist bullies and finding the support and mentorship he
craved on the football team, to an NFL season where he worked
closely with Colin Kaepernick as he evolved his sideline protest.
Keanon was drawn to the young men on the Parkrose team, and to the
school itself. After two years, he pushed them to become conference
champions, mentoring countless players along the way. But still,
there was that nagging sense that his calling wasn't meant to stop
there. He was at that school for a reason. In May 2019, he got his
answer when a 19-year-old student entered a Parkrose classroom with
a trench coat and shotgun. Keanon disarmed him and pulled the boy
into a hug, telling him he cared. In the boy, Keanon saw himself,
and the young men he grew up with or mentored along the way--and
weren't so many of them just looking for acceptance, for comfort,
for love? With the heart of favorite football classics--The
Blindside, Friday Night Lights, Remember the Titans--Keanon's
journey at Parkrose is the true account of a life spent striving
forward, even when faced with the unimaginable. Hometown Victory is
a story about gratitude, service, and most of all, hope.
