Drawing on the concept of resilient healthcare, this book explores
multimodally embedded everyday practices of healthcare
professionals in the UK and Japan, utilising novel technology, such
as eye-tracking glasses, to inform what constitutes good practice.
Providing an interdisciplinary examination of the theories and
rationales of resilient healthcare, the book engages with a range
of case studies from a variety of healthcare settings in the UK and
Japan and considers the application of advanced technologies for
visualising healthcare interactions and implementing virtual
healthcare simulation. In doing so, it showcases a number of
multimodal approaches and highlights the potential benefits of
multimodal and multidisciplinary approaches to healthcare
communication research for enhancing resilience in their local
contexts.
This book focuses on the Frobenius theorem regarding a nonlinear
simultaneous system. The Frobenius theorem is well known as a
condition for a linear simultaneous system’s having a nonnegative
solution. Generally, however, the condition of a simultaneous
system, including a non-linear system’s having a nonnegative
solution, is hardly discussed at all. This book, therefore, extends
the conventional Frobenius theorem for nonlinear simultaneous
systems for economic analysis. Â Almost all static
optimization problems in economics involve nonlinear programing.
Theoretical models in economics are described in the form of a
simultaneous system resulting from the rational optimization
behavior of households and enterprises. On the other hand, rational
optimization behavior of households and enterprises is,
mathematically speaking, expressed as nonlinear programing. For
this reason it is important to understand the meaning of nonlinear
programing. Because this book includes explanations of the
relations among various restrictions in a nonlinear programing
systematically and clearly, this book is suitable for students in
graduate school programs in economics.
Hydraulic gates are utilized in multiple capacities in modern
society. As such, the failure of these gates can have disastrous
consequences, and it is imperative to develop new methods to avoid
these occurrences. Dynamic Stability of Hydraulic Gates and
Engineering for Flood Prevention is a critical reference source

mechanisms to decrease the failure rate of hydraulic gates.
Including a range of perspectives on topics such as fluid dynamics,
vibration mechanisms, and flow stability, this book is ideally
designed for researchers, academics, engineers, graduate students,
and practitioners interested in the study of hydraulic gate
structure.

This book examines new trends and developments in research related
to the mathematical education of pre-service elementary teachers,
and explores the implications of these research advances for theory
and practice in teacher education. The book is organized around the
following four overarching themes: pre-service teachers'
mathematics content and mathematics-specific pedagogical
preparation; professional growth through activities and assessment
tools used in mathematics teacher preparation programs; pre-service
mathematics teachers' knowledge and beliefs; and perspectives on
noticing in the preparation of elementary mathematics teachers.
Including contributions from researchers working in 11 different
countries, the book offers a forum for discussing and debating the
state of the art regarding the mathematical preparation of
pre-service elementary teachers. By presenting and discussing the
findings of research conducted in different countries, the book
offers also opportunities to readers to learn about varying teacher
education practices around the world, such as: innovative practices
in advancing or assessing teachers' knowledge and beliefs,
similarities and differences in the formal mathematics education of
teachers, types of and routes in teacher education, and factors
that can influence similarities or differences.
Providing a comprehensive treatment of a full range of migrant
destinies in East Asia by scholars from both Asia and North
America, this volume captures the way migrants are changing the
face of Asia, especially in cities, such as Beijing, Hong Kong,
Hamamatsu, Osaka, Tokyo, and Singapore. It investigates how the
crossing of geographical boundaries should also be recognized as a
crossing of cultural and social categories that reveals the
extraordinary variation in the migrants' origins and trajectories.
These migrants span the spectrum: from Korean bar hostesses in
Osaka to African entrepreneurs in Hong Kong, from Vietnamese women
seeking husbands across the Chinese border to Pakistani Muslim men
marrying women in Japan, from short-term business travelers in
China to long-term tourists from Japan who ultimately decide to
retire overseas. Illuminating the ways in which an Asian-based
analysis of migration can yield new data on global migration
patterns, the contributors provide important new theoretical
insights for a broader understanding of global migration, and
innovative methodological approaches to the spatial and temporal
complexity of human migration.
Reading a Japanese Film, written by a pioneer of Japanese film
studies in the United States, provides viewers new to Japanese
cinema with the necessary tools to construct a deeper understanding
of some of the most critically acclaimed and thoroughly
entertaining films ever made. In her introduction, Keiko McDonald
presents a historical overview and outlines a unified approach to
film analysis. Sixteen "readings" of films currently available on
DVD with English subtitles put theory into practice as she
considers a wide range of work, from familiar classics by Ozu and
Kurosawa to the films of a younger generation of directors.
The authors are very glad to see the publication
ofThermodynamicEquilibriaand Extrema in English and would like to
express their gratitude to everybody who contributed to this end.
The book is devoted to the analysis of attainability regions and
partial equilibria in physicochemical and other systems. This
analysis employs the extreme models
ofclassicalequilibriumthermodynamics.
Considerationisgiventotheproblemof choosing, from the set of
equilibrium states belonging to the attainability regions, that
equilibrium corresponding to the extreme values of a property of
interest to a researcher. For example, one might desire to maximize
the concentration of target products of a chemical reaction. The
problem of coordinating thermodynamics and kinetics is very
important in the analysis presented. Ataglance,
itmayseemthattheobjectsofstudyinthermodynamics(thescience
ofequilibria)andkinetics(thescienceofmotiontowardequilibrium)coincideonly
in the case of complete and ?nal equilibrium. In reality, joint
application of th- modynamics and kinetic models gives a clearer
understanding of the regularities of the kinetics involved.
Relativity of the notions of rest and motion was already ?rmly
established in mechanics when the principles of equilibrium were
formulated by Galilei, D'Alembert, and Lagrange. Historically, the
theories of motion and equilibrium states are related. It is
precisely the study of gas kinetics that led Clausius and Boltzmann
to the main principles of thermodynamics. The systematic analysis
of theseprinciplesintheclassicbookbyGibbs,
OntheEquilibriumofHeterogeneous Substances 54], demonstrated the
feasibility of substituting the models of rest for
themodelsofmotionwhenstudyingvariousphysicochemicalprocesses.
"Frontiers of Ottoman Studies" provides a comprehensive overview of
the surge in research into Ottoman history and culture over the
past two decades. This first volume reflects the growing interest
in the provinces, communities and cultures outside the imperial
capital of Istanbul and covers four major areas: politics and
Islam; economy and taxation; and development of Ottoman towns and
Arab and Jewish communities. Chapters on the development of Ottoman
legal and fiscal institutions provide a fascinating insight into
the Ottoman government's interaction with the Empire's subjects,
while reviews of Egypt and the Arab provinces emphasize the
stirrings of Arab nationalism in the late nineteenth and twentieth
centuries that ultimately contributed to the demise of the
Empire.
This book overviews cancer immunity from broad scientific fields,
based on the concept that cancer is a sort of by-product of
infection, inflammation, and host immune response. The innate and
acquired arms of the immune system mainly participate in tumor
immune surveillance, and their activation is critically modulated
by the situation of the tumor microenvironment. Many types of
immune cells join the formation of the microenvironment. In
particular, macrophages and dendritic cells enter the tumor mass to
be main players in the inflammatory milieu of tumors. After
introducing these topics, the book discusses immunotherapy for
cancer patients as an outgrowth of this concept of infection and
inflammation. With the contributions of leading scientists actively
involved in the field of antitumor immunity study, this book
encourages readers to understand the mechanism of general cancers
based on inflammation and will facilitate prevention and the
development of therapeutics for cancer.

This edited book examines the phenomenon of English as a Lingua
Franca (ELF) in the Japanese context, using multilingualism as a
lens through which to explore language practices and attitudes in
what is traditionally viewed as a monolingual, monocultural
setting. The authors cover a broad spectrum of topics within this
theme, including language education policies, the nature of ELF
communication in both academic and business settings, users' and
learners' perceptions of ELF, and the pedagogy to foster
ELF-oriented attitudes. Teaching and learning practices are
reconsidered from ELF and multilingual perspectives, shifting the
focus from the conformity to native-speaker norms to ELF users'
creative use of multilingual resources. This book is a key resource
for advancing ELF study and research in Japan, and it will also be
of interest to students and scholars studying multilingualism and
World Englishes in other global contexts.
Advertising Language analyses the ways advertisers use language to gain and retain the attention of their audience, with particular emphasis on puns and metaphors. The book contains a unique chapter on images of women in Japanese advertising and is the only book to contrast British and Japanese advertising, subsequently revealing penetrating insights into these two cultures.
This book offers a unique grounded analysis of recent crises and
transformations in academic work. It charts international and
Australia-based efforts to overcome academic fragmentation and
precarity, and to advance agendas for the public university. It is
based on extensive qualitative interviews with academics and
managers across several universities in Australia. It finds new
grounds for ‘universal’ universities, with decent jobs, to
serve the public good. The book is aimed at students and scholars
from sociology, education, politics and industrial relations, and a
wider readership concerned about the future of universities.
Analysis centres on a trade union-led initiative in Australia aimed
at decasualising universities, and ensuing debates about the impact
of academic fragmentation. The authors argue for strengthening the
teaching/research nexus as the foundation-stone for public purpose
universities.
This book addresses the complex events and unexpected outcomes of
military intervention by the United States and its allies in Iraq
in 2003. Considering the long-term outcomes of the intervention,
this volume examines economic collapse, societal disorder, and
increased regional conflict in Iraq. The book assesses the means by
which American strategists imposed a new political order,
generalising corruption, sectarian preference, and ethnic
cleansing, and stimulating mass population movements in and from
Iraq. Mobilising a multidisciplinary perspective, the book explores
the rise and fall of Iraq's confessional leaders, the emergence of
a popular movement for reform, and the demands of young radicals
focused upon revolutionary change. The product of years of
intensive research by Iraqis and international scholars, Iraq since
the Invasion considers how an initiative designed to produce
"regime change" favourable to the United States and its allies
brought unprecedented influence for Iran-both in Iraq and the wider
Gulf region. It analyses events in Kurdistan and the impacts of
change on relations between Iraq and its neighbours. The book
includes a wealth of detail on political, social, and cultural
change, and on the experiences of Iraqis during long years of
upheaval. It will be of value to researchers and students
interested in international relations, development studies, and
Middle East politics.

language classes, this volume encourages the development of systems
in Japan that foster equitable and inclusive language policies.
This book is a work that focuses on the forest environmental tax.
Forest resources have played a major role in preventing global
warming by absorbing carbon dioxide and supplying oxygen. However,
global economic growth has adversely affected the global
environment and has exacerbated global warming due to excessive
consumption of forest resources. The functions or "services" of
forests are diverse, but the interest of the citizenry in forest
cultivation is scarce since forests are public goods. Concurrently,
Japanese forestry, which has played an important role in forest
conservation, is steadily declining, and it is no longer possible
for private forest operators to maintain the forest environment.
Therefore, in order to realize sustainable economic growth, it is
necessary to formulate policies for the conservation of appropriate
forest environments. Forest conservation is an especially important
policy issue for Japan, where two-thirds of the country is
forested. In Japan, a forest environmental tax is being introduced
as a forest conservation policy. As of 2021, the forest
environmental tax has already been introduced in about two-thirds
of the prefectures and soon will be introduced as a national tax.
In this book, the significance and issues of the forest
environmental tax will be sorted out, and the status of the
introduction of the forest environmental tax in Japan will be
compared with that of other countries. In addition, there is
additional material regarding the water source conservation fund in
Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, a system similar to the forest
environmental tax.
This edited book reflects the state of the art in learner corpus
and related approaches to Chinese as a second language (CSL). CSL
as a field has flourished in the past few decades due to the
increasingly important role of the Chinese language at the world
stage, yet studies of Chinese as a second language based on learner
corpora have been less well developed due to the limited
availability of data and lack of theoretical insights. This
book represents the latest research in this area by 1)
assembling a large group of active researchers from multiple
international research communities (USA, China, Hong Kong, Macau,
Japan, Taiwan, and France); 2) discussing the latest resources and
technologies in Chinese and other Asian languages learner corpora
and corpus building; 3) basing Chinese as a second language studies
on data from learners of Chinese with a wide range of first
language backgrounds (English, Japanese, Korean, French, among
others); and 4) integrating corpus methods with a wide range of
related methods in allied fields—language acquisition,
usage-based linguistics, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics.
This comprehensive collection is indispensable for anyone
who is interested in corpus approaches to CSL and Chinese applied
language studies in general.
Typological studies require a broad range of linguistic data from a
variety of countries, especially developing nations whose languages
are under-researched. This is especially challenging for
investigations of sign languages, because there are no existing
corpora for most of them, and some are completely undocumented. To
examine three cross-linguistically fruitful semantic fields in sign
languages from a typological perspective for the first time, a
detailed questionnaire was generated and distributed worldwide
through emails, mailing lists, websites and the newsletter of the
World Federation of the Deaf (WFD). This resulted in robust data on
kinship, colour and number in 32 sign languages across the globe,
10 of which are revealed in depth within this volume. These
comprise languages from Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific
region, including Indonesian sign language varieties, which are
rarely studied. Like other volumes in this series, this book will
be illuminative for typologists, students of linguistics and deaf
studies, lecturers, researchers, interpreters, and sign language
users who travel internationally.
