The Fifth Element is Knowledge: Readings on Education, Hip-Hop, and
Sport helps students critically examine issues related to race,
gender, identity, inequality, politics, and economics through the
lenses of education, hip-hop culture, and sport. The featured
readings facilitate the development of students' critical academic
and psychosocial talents while connecting them to relevant issues
in different social contexts. The articles are organized into seven
sections. Sections I and II describe the foundations and
overarching structures and conditions that shape education,
hip-hop, and sport. The next three sections address the ways that
athletes experience hip-hop culture. Students read articles that
examine the prominent, global cultural phenomenon of hip-hop and
sport and how it will continue to influence the world, now and in
the future. Each section includes discussion questions to encourage
further exploration of the material and spark critical
conversations. Underscoring the political significance and social
influence of the nexus of education, hip-hop, and sport, The Fifth
Element is Knowledge is an ideal resource for courses that examine
sociology, contemporary social issues, and culture.
This book explores how Bakhtin's ideas can illuminate the
compelling but uneasy fusion of Shakespeare and cinema. With a wide
variety of tones, languages, cultural orientations, and thematic
concerns, film directors have updated, translated, transposed,
fragmented, parodied, and geographically re-situated Shakespeare.
Keith Harrison illustrates how Bakhtin's interlinked writings in
various fields can fruitfully be applied to an understanding of how
the ongoing responsiveness of filmmakers to Shakespeare's
historically remote words can shape self-expressive acts of
co-authoring in another medium. Through the use of such Bakhtinian
concepts as the chronotope, heteroglossia, the carnivalesque, and
polyphony, Harrison details how filmmakers-faithful to their
specific cultures, genders, geographies, and historical
moments-dialogically locate their particularity through
Shakespeare's presence.
Developing and implementing a systematic analytics strategy can
result in a sustainable competitive advantage within the sport
business industry. This timely and relevant book provides practical

provides coaches, educators, parents, and others dealing with
students and athletes with an engaging and critical context for
probing the sociological basis of this influence. The book's
sections each address a particular issue in sport: youth and sport;
gender and sexuality; race and ethnicity; sport, media, and big
business; and international perspectives on sport and
participation. Leading experts in the field present new and
exciting avenues for exploring sport in our world, allowing us to
recognize its tremendous influence, both positive and negative, in
our lives and in our world. This new edition also includes
cutting-edge research examining contemporary issues and
controversies surrounding sport today. These issues, analyzed from
multiple perspectives, will inspire readers to change the game in
positive ways.

'The finest translation in and for our time' (Kevin
Crossley-Holland) Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, with its
intricate plot of enchantment and betrayal is probably the most
skilfully told story in the whole of the English Arthurian cycle.
Originating from the north-west midlands of England, it is based on
two separate and very ancient Celtic motifs of the Beheading and
the Exchange of Winnings, brought together by the anonymous 14th
century poet. His telling comprehends a great variety of moods and
modes - from the stark realism of the hunt-scenes to the delicious
and dangerous bedroom encounters between Lady Bercilak and Gawain,
from moments of pure lyric beauty when he evokes the English
countryside in all its seasons, to authorial asides that are full
of irony and puckish humour. This new verse translation uses a
modern alliterative pattern which subtly echoes the music of the
original at the same time as it strives for fidelity. ABOUT THE
SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made
available the widest range of literature from around the globe.
Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship,
providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable
features, including expert introductions by leading authorities,
helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for
further study, and much more.

Some of the largest Martian erosive features were influenced by
groundwater, and include valley networks, outflow channels, and
possibly landslides. We argue that hydrothermal systems attending
crustal formation processes were able to drive sufficient
groundwater to the surface to form the Noachian southern highlands
valley networks, which show a spatial correlation to crustal
magnetic anomalies, also results of crustal formation. Hydrothermal
activity is quantified through numerical simulations of convection
in a porous medium due to the presence of a hot intruded magma
chamber. The parameter space includes magma chamber depth, volume,
aspect ratio, and host rock permeability and porosity. For
permeabilities as low as l0(exp -17) sq m and intrusion volumes as
low as 50 km, the total discharge due to intrusions building that
part of the southern highlands crust associated with magnetic
anomalies spans a comparable range as the inferred discharge from
the overlying valley networks. The Hesperian circum-Chryse outflow
channels are further manifestations of groundwater discharge and
Clifford and Parker (2001) suggest that the large volumes of water
required for their formation flows beneath a confining cryosphere
from the South Pole where meltwater beneath an ice cap recharges a
global aquifer. We argue that recharge occurs instead over the
nearby Tharsis aquifer at high obliquity, assisted by cryosphere
melting due to volcanic activity. Numerical simulations quantify
the strength and duration of outflow discharge given either South
Polar or Tharsis recharge. The contribution of South Pole recharge
given Clifford and Parker aquifer properties is negligible compared
to that of the initial Tharsis inventory. Tharsis recharge, despite
the restrictions of improved aquifer properties, makes a
significant contribution and, unlike South Pole recharge under the
same conditions, fulfills discharge requirements.
Business Process Management and Workflow are, by their very nature,
social activities. The collaboration and communication patterns
that are now increasingly referred to as "social computing" were
also fundamental to the BPM and workflow models of the early 1990s.
Yet it has been the recent explosion of social computing and
accompanying success of social production, from Linux to Wikipedia,
and Facebook to Twitter, which have had the most dramatic impact on
collaboration in business environments.
Today we see the transformation of both the look and feel of BPM
technologies along the lines of social media, as well as the
increasing adoption of social tools and techniques democratizing
process development and design. It is along these two trend lines;
the evolution of system interfaces and the increased engagement of
stakeholders in process improvement, that Social BPM has taken
shape.

Set in the colourful, intense, competitive Montreal of the 1980s,
Harrison's novel explores the efforts of two couples to reach
beyond the boundaries of self. Their tangled relationships hang in
precarious balance, with the individuals drifting towards
confrontation and an awkward, though dramatic, reckoning. "After
Six Days" is written in taut, contemporary prose, its short,
explosive scenes alive with the authentic feeling of urban life
now.
