The pioneer astronauts who took America into space tell their personal stories about the challenges they faced -- their fears, joys, friendships, and successes.

Chosen from hundreds of crackerjack pilots for their fitness, intelligence, and courage, the original Mercury Seven astronauts risked their lives to cross the space frontier. In "We Seven, " they take readers behind the scenes to show them their training, technology, and teamwork, and to share personal stories, including the lighter moments of their mission. They bring readers inside the Mercury program -- even into the space capsules themselves. "We Seven" straps you in with the astronauts and rockets you along for the ride.

Share Alan Shepard's exhilaration as he breaks through the earth's atmosphere. Endure moments of panic with Gus Grissom when his hatch blows, stranding him in the open sea. Race with John Glenn as he makes split-second life-or-death maneuvers during reentry, and feel his relief when he emerges safe but drenched with sweat.

Despite such heroism, Project Mercury was more than the story of individual missions. It defined the manned space flight program to come, from Gemini through Apollo. In "We Seven, " America's original astronauts tell us firsthand -- as only they can -- about the space program they pioneered, and share with us the hopes and dreams of the U.S. at the dawn of a new era.

R7,607 Discovery Miles 76 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Immunologists, perhaps understandably, most often concentrate on the human immune system, an anthropocentric focus that has resulted in a dearth of information about the immune function of all other species within the animal kingdom. However, knowledge of animal immune function could help not only to better understand human immunology, but perhaps more importantly, it could help to treat and avoid the blights that affect animals, which consequently affect humans. Take for example the mass death of honeybees in recent years - their demise, resulting in much less pollination, poses a serious threat to numerous crops, and thus the food supply. There is a similar disappearance of frogs internationally, signaling ecological problems, among them fungal infections. This book aims to fill this void by describing and discussing what is known about non-human immunology. It covers various major animal phyla, its chapters organized in a progression from the simplest unicellular organisms to the most complex vertebrates, mammals. Chapters are written by experts, covering the latest findings and new research being conducted about each phylum. Edwin L. Cooper is a Distinguished Professor in the Laboratory of Comparative Immunology, Department of Neurobiology at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine.

The medical profession is rich in those who have made names for themselves outside of medicine. The fields of literature, exploration, business, sport, entertainment, and beyond abound with doctors whose interests lie outside medicine. This book, largely written by members of the medical profession, examines the efforts of doctors in non-medical fields. The doctors discussed here are those who are, or were, well-known to the public for their contributions to their non-medical fields of choice. In many cases, the public may have been unaware that a subject was medically qualified. This book provides wide-ranging and comprehensive biographical sketches of forty-two doctors who are best known to the public for their contributions to fields outside of medicine.

Michael P. Leiter, Cary L. Cooper
R1,109 Discovery Miles 11 090 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book offers an extensive look into the ways living through the COVID-19 pandemic has deepened our understanding of the crises people experience in their relationships with work. Leading experts explore burnout as an occupational phenomenon that arises through mismatches between workplace and individuals on the day-to-day patterns in work life. By disrupting where, when, and how people worked, pandemic measures upset the delicate balances in place regarding core areas of work life. Chapters examine the profound implications of social distancing on the quality and frequency of social encounters among colleagues, with management, and with clientele. The book covers a variety of occupational groups such as those in the healthcare and education sectors, and demonstrates the advantages and strains that come with working from home. The authors also consider the broader social context of working through the pandemic regarding risks and rewards for essential workers. By focusing on changes in organisational structures, policies, and practices, this book looks at effective ways forward in both recovering from this pandemic and preparing for further workplace disruptions. A wide audience of students and researchers in psychology, management, business, healthcare, and social sciences, as well as policy makers in government and professional organisations, will benefit from this detailed insight into the ways COVID-19 has affected contemporary work attitudes and practices.

Advancing in provocative ways the emerging fields of fifteenth-century literary and cultural study, the volume as a whole explores the role of the aesthetic not only in late medieval society but also in our own.

The Routledge Companion to Mental Health at Work: Arla Day, Cary L. Cooper The Routledge Companion to Mental Health at Work
Arla Day, Cary L. Cooper
R6,157 Discovery Miles 61 570 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The issue of mental health at work has become a hot topic in both the popular media and academic writings. Although job stress and mental ill-health are associated with negative outcomes for individuals, teams, and organizations, there has been some suggestion that changing the work environment and creating healthy workplaces can improve worker health. Much of the current works in the general of health is fractured, coming from a variety of disciplines and perspectives without an organizing framework to help guide research and practice in the area. Having this individualized, compartmentalized perspective constrains our ability to fully understand the scope of the issue, the key factors in supporting or detracting from one’s mental health, and interventions focusing on mental health at work. Given the importance of understanding mental health at work and the current lack of coverage on workplace mental health, there is a need for a book to provide a holistic overview of the issue targeting the environmental, individual, and group influences of mental health and well-being, as well as the impact on individuals and workplaces. This handbook provides a conceptual framework for examining these issues. Each chapter offers an in-depth examination of the key facets of mental health at work, focusing both on the seminal and current literature on the topic and practical suggestions for best practices for organizations. With contributions from leading experts, authors address the state-of-the-art research and integrate current events that are shaping the way we work and our wellbeing at work. This edited collection will be of interest to researchers, academics, policymakers, and advanced students in the fields of human resource management, organizational psychology, and management.

From emotional labour in family firms, to affective corporate paternalism and the role of specific emotions such as trust, fear, anxiety love and nostalgia in creating economic connections, this book opens a rich new avenue of research for both the history of emotions and business history.

In the Shadow of the Polish Eagle - The Poles, the Holocaust and Beyond (Hardcover): L. Cooper In the Shadow of the Polish Eagle - The Poles, the Holocaust and Beyond (Hardcover)
L. Cooper
R1,459 Discovery Miles 14 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The behavior of many Poles towards the Jewish population during the Nazi occupation of Poland has always been a controversial issue. Although the Poles are supposed not to have collaborated with the invaders, there is evidence to show that in respect of the Jewish population, the behavior of many Poles, including members of the underground, was far from exemplary. Poland is also the only European country where Jews were being murdered after the end of the war and where strong anti-Semitic tendencies are still present. This book analyzes this question in an historical context and attempts to offer an explanation for the phenomenon of Polish anti-Semitism during and after the end of the war. The work is based on recently uncovered documents as well as on personal accounts of witnesses to the events during the war.

This book is about Russia's foreign relations. It examines the factors that determine Russia's foreign policy, such as the economy and domestic politics. It devotes special attention to the so-called 'Russian idea' - a foreign policy determinant largely overlooked by western politicians and analysts. It attempts such an analysis by applying Russian rather than Western criteria because we are dealing here with a country with a unique culture and history.

Phylogenetic Perspectives on the Vertebrate Immune System (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Gregory Becker, Manickam Sugumaran, Edwin L.... Phylogenetic Perspectives on the Vertebrate Immune System (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Gregory Becker, Manickam Sugumaran, Edwin L. Cooper
R5,669 Discovery Miles 56 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains the proceedings of the first meeting on invertebrate immunity ever sponsored as a summer research conference by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). The conference was held in Copper Mountain, CO from July 11-16, 1999. It was a an extension of a New York Academy of Sciences meeting entitled "Primordial Immunity: Foundations for the Vertebrate Immune System" held on May 2-5,1993 at the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole, MA. The proceedings of that meeting were published in The Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (volume 712). At that meeting all the attendes agreed that this type of conference (a relatively small focused gathering) allowed for participation by investigators at all levels of their careers. We further agreed that we should search for a forum that would allow this meeting to continue. The FASEB Summer Research Conference was an excellent vehicle for this type of meeting. Furthermore, this year's participants decided to continue this meeting as a regularly scheduled FASEB sponsored event. This was a unique conference in the sense that it focused upon mechanisms of development and defense in protostome and deuterostome invertebrates and lower vertebrates. There was a strong emphasis on evolutionary cell biology, phylogenetic inferences and the evolution of recognition and regulatory systems.

Personality: Critical Concepts (Hardcover): Cary Cooper, Cary L. Cooper, Lawrence A. Pervin Personality: Critical Concepts (Hardcover)
Cary Cooper, Cary L. Cooper, Lawrence A. Pervin
R25,465 Discovery Miles 254 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Almost everything we do as humans is influenced by our personalities. The study of personalities has been a topic of great interest and debate from the earliest psychologists to present day researchers who specialize in applications of personality theory in the education and business worlds. This set of critical readings in personality theory brings together all the major contributions in the field. All the classical papers on the critical theories of personality are included, as well as more contemporary work on cross-cultural and social approaches. With an emphasis throughout on looking at the major issues in personality work, key topics covered include: how personality is defined; how personality can be measured; how different personalities interact; how personality work should be conducted; and how personality is applied in education, business and clinical settings. Central issues associated with personality, such as assessment, and topics allied to personality, such as motivation, nature versus nurture, expectancies and attributions, and the self are also addressed.

Managing Mergers Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances - Integrating People and Cultures (Paperback, 2nd edition): Sue... Managing Mergers Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances - Integrating People and Cultures (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Sue Cartwright, Cary L. Cooper
R1,792 Discovery Miles 17 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mergers, acquisitions, and alliances continue to be almost an everyday feature of the contemporary business scene, yet at least half prove to be unsuccessful. The authors show the contribution that psychology can make to our understanding of the merger phenomena - how it affects organizational performance, and how it affects the managers and employees involved. Mergers, Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances is intended as a guide to successful organizational marriage. Great emphasis is placed on the issue of cultural compatibility as it concerns partner selection, integration practices and venture outcomes. The book also focuses on cross-national mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. With the increasing economic activity within the European Union and between the unions of other countries, there is a need to know more about the corporate and national cultures in these strategic alliances. The authors have drawn upon an extensive body of research based on recent cases in a wide cross section of industries across Europe. The book is unique in showing the actual effect mergers and acquisitions have on people, and consequently on the performance of the 'new' organization. It will be particularly relevant for decision makers - those who are involved in planning and implementing a large organizational change, and those responsible for ensuring successful integration afterwards. It would also be extremely useful for postgraduate management students, personnel executives and management consultants.
