The first Texas-based writer to gain national attention, J. Frank Dobie proved that authentic writing springs easily from the native soil of Texas and the Southwest. In best-selling books such as Tales of Old-Time Texas, Coronado's Children, and The Longhorns, Dobie captured the Southwest's folk history, which was quickly disappearing as the United States became ever more urbanized and industrial. Renowned as "Mr. Texas," Dobie paradoxically has almost disappeared from view-a casualty of changing tastes in literature and shifts in social and political attitudes since the 1960s. In this lively biography, Steven L. Davis takes a fresh look at a J. Frank Dobie whose "liberated mind" set him on an intellectual journey that culminated in Dobie becoming a political liberal who fought for labor, free speech, and civil rights well before these causes became acceptable to most Anglo Texans. Tracing the full arc of Dobie's life (1888-1964), Davis shows how Dobie's insistence on "free-range thinking" led him to such radical actions as calling for the complete integration of the University of Texas during the 1940s, as well as taking on governors, senators, and the FBI (which secretly investigated him) as Texas's leading dissenter during the McCarthy era.

The Russo-Turkish War""was one of the most decisive conflicts of the 18th century. In this book, Brian Davies offers a thorough survey of the war and explains why it was crucial to the political triumph of Catherine the Great, the southward expansion of the Russian Empire, and the rollback of Ottoman power from southeastern Europe. The war completed the incorporation of Ukraine into the Russian Empire, ended the independence of the great Cossack hosts, removed once and for all the military threat from the Crimean Khanate, began the partitions of Poland, and encouraged Catherine II to plan projects to complete the "liberation" of the lower Danubian and Balkan Slavs and Greeks. The war legitimated and secured the power of Catherine II, finally made the Pontic steppe safe for agricultural colonization, and won ports enabling Russia to control the Black Sea and become a leading grain exporter. Traditionally historians (Sorel, for example) have treated this war as the beginning of the "Eastern Question," the question of how the European powers should manage the decline of the Ottoman Empire. A thorough grasp of the Russo-Turkish War is essential to understanding the complexity and volatility of diplomacy in 18th-century Europe. This book will be an invaluable resource for all scholars and students on European military history and the history of Eastern Europe.

View the Table of Contents "Draws upon previously neglected primary sources to offer a
ground-breaking analysis of the intertwined political, racial, and
religious dynamics at work in the institutional merging of three
American Methodist denominations in 1939. Davis boldly examines the
conflicted ethics behind a dominant American religious culture's
justification and preservation of racial segregation in the
reformulation of its post-slavery institutional presence in
American society. His work provides a much-needed, critical
discussion of the racial issues that pervaded American religion and
culture in the early twentieth century.a aA discerning, sober, and troubling probing of the preoccupation
within the Methodist Church with Christian nationalism,
civilization as defined by white Anglo-Saxon manhood, and race,
race consciousness and athe problem of the Negroa that was
foundational to and constitutive of a reunited Methodism. A must
read for students of early 20th century America.a In the early part of the twentieth century, Methodists were seen by many Americans as the most powerful Christian group in the country. Ulysses S. Grant is rumored to have said that during his presidency there were three major political parties in the U.S., if you counted the Methodists. The Methodist Unification focuses on the efforts among the Southern and Northern Methodist churches to create a unified national Methodist church, and how their plan for unification came to institutionalizeracism and segregation in unprecedented ways. How did these Methodists conceive of what they had just formed as auniteda when members in the church body were racially divided? Moving the history of racial segregation among Christians beyond a simplistic narrative of racism, Morris L. Davis shows that Methodists in the early twentieth century -- including high-profile African American clergy -- were very much against racial equality, believing that mixing the races would lead to interracial marriages and threaten the social order of American society. The Methodist Unification illuminates the religious culture of Methodism, Methodists' self-identification as the primary carriers of "American Christian Civilization," and their influence on the crystallization of whiteness during the Jim Crow Era as a legal category and cultural symbol.
THE CHRISTIAN'S WARFARE: IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR As you read this book, you will come to see that victory over the obstacles we face in life is not just about His power or His presence but about your Positioning. Christ has promised us His power just as he has promised us His presence, but He leaves it up to us to be PROPERLY POSITIONED in certain areas in order that we might gain the victory. These areas are: Living successfully as Singles in a sex-crazed society Husbands loving their wives as Christ loved the church. Wives submitting to and reverencing their husbands Children obeying and honoring their parents Fathers not provoking their children to anger and discouragement Men becoming providers and not pimps in their home FRANCIS L. DAVIS is the pastor/founder of West End Bibleway Christian Fellowship in New Iberia, Louisiana. He is a passionate Teacher of the Word of God whose giftedness is not in how much he knows, but in his ability to make plain, and simple and exciting God's truths. His next book, which will soon be available, is entitled: The Misbehaving Church. "This book acquaints the Saints with proper positioning strategies by providing us with a means to inspect what we expect based on God's expectations for each of us. It addresses a basic premise, that behavior follows belief over a protracted period of time. Reformation can never truly change behavior, transformation of one's belief system is required to behave differently. Misbehavior is a reflection of "mis-believing." Many in the Kingdom will be blessed through this work. Thank you Pastor Davis for obeying the Spirit." "I propose a toast " declared Inspector Dupree as he held up his glass. "A toast to the bravest, smartest girl on the island of St. Vincent. I raise my glass to the girl that has captured the hearts of all those who have come to know her, Bobby White." When the crew of the Argo Merchant spots a small, yellow inflatable dinghy bobbing in the Caribbean's bright blue waters, they find twelve-year-old Bobby White aboard. Barely alive, the crew takes her to the Island of St. Vincent. Taken in by St. Vincent's Chief Inspector Dupree and his wife, Bobby slowly recovers her memory. What she remembers deepens the mystery. When the captain of the schooner on which she and her family were traveling appears in the marketplace, Bobby is stunned. Why is he here? Where is her family? Bobby is plunged into the Island's underbelly as she endeavors to discover her family's fate. Inspector Dupree wants to help Bobby, who he's come to care for as a daughter. But he must also guard the secrets he's been concealing from his government. He begins to walk a thin line between looking the other way as illegal merchandise moves through the island and caring for the little girl who appeared from the sea. Based on a true story, Bobby White combines high-seas' tales of drugs, kidnapping, and deceit with a touching story of a girl who survives.

Pragmatic and sociolinguistic analyses of im/politeness have usually been dependent on context and cultural frames of reference. This new study approaches the concept from an original perspective, namely situatedness. Although politeness research often concentrates on examining how speeches or discourses themselves are situated with regards to different places and contexts, the focus on just one situation, and various text types within it, can also be of value. Situated Politeness is concerned with disentangling the factors which govern our behaviour within a given social context as well as across them. A range of expanding disciplines, including corpus linguistics, are brought to bear on the topic, and this work will be of interest to a diverse global audience. |
