This book examines the first regional strategy of South Korea
towards Southeast Asia and India. At issue is how a middle power (a
G20 country with the tenth largest economy in the world) seeks to
play a larger and more comprehensive role in regions beyond the
Korean peninsula. Hitherto, South Korean foreign policy has focused
on nuclearizing North Korea, alliance maintenance with the United
States, tricky relations with its most important economic partner
China, and difficult ties with Japan marred by historical and
territorial disputes. The Moon Administration has sought to
diversify South Korean foreign policy by elevating ASEAN and India
to the same strategic level as the United States, China, Russia and
Japan. To be sure, the latter countries continue to be most
significant to the Korean peninsula. However, this book offers
different country and regional perspectives on Seoul's first
regional grand strategy to play a role commensurate with its status
as a middle power.
This edited collection analyzes the innovative changes in Japan's
foreign policy. Pursuing new relationships with South Asia, Africa,
and Eastern Europe, Japanese initiatives include regional
peace-building and human security activities, Asian
multilateralism, and the Indo-Pacific concept. This collection
focuses on these evolving international relationships through
Japan's unique approach to political change and continuity.
This book presents a comprehensive overview of the relations
between the two Koreas and the different ASEAN states, including
their relations with ASEAN as an organization. It outlines a
complex picture with both bilateral and multilateral relations in
play at the same time. It charts for each relationship how the
present situation has arisen, discusses current difficulties and
strains, and assesses how the relationship may develop in future.
An important comparative study of Japanese politics that reveals
that green issues have yet to displace the traditional urban
politics of post-industrial Japan. This is unlike the rise of green
parties and politics in Europe. Unlike Europe, it seems that
political values in Japan are still informed by the conservative
values of hierarchy and deference.

The Singapore parliament's creation of an elected presidency in
1991 was the biggest constitutional and political change in
Singapore's modern era. This multi-disciplinary study gathers
papers from leading scholars in law, history, political science and
economics to examine how political change is managed in Singapore.
It is an authoritative addition to debates surrounding the
management of political change in developing countries more
generally.
This new collection examines the paradox of Sino-Japanese relations
and the rising diplomatic antagonism between both countries despite
deepening economic interdependency. Offering a unique perspective
on the history of bilateral ties since diplomatic normalization in
1972, it considers the growing interdependency between China and
Japan in bilateral trade, investment, tourism and education, as
well as the question of nationalism and Sino-Japanese rivalry in
multilateral settings such as in ASEAN processes, the Mekong Basin
and the South China Sea. Focusing on the power transition in East
Asia, the lack of a common enemy in the post-Cold War era, the
clash of Chinese and Japanese nationalism, and a lack of trust,
shared values and common identity between China and Japan, this
collection addresses the origins of a troubled bilateral
relationship which could impact on the stability and prosperity of
East Asia.
