In die (outo)biografiese roman Sprakeloos vertel Tom Lanoye van sy ma se beroerte, haar spraakverlies en haar langsame aftakeling en uiteindelike dood.
Terselfdertyd toon die roman die ontreddering van ’n skrywer wat sy moedertaal in sy moeder sien verlore gaan en wat dié verlies probeer besweer met ’n vuurwerk van woorde. Die verlies van taal word herstel met taal. Met heelwat humor neem die skrywer ook afskeid van sy jeug, van sy pa se slaghuis en die sprankelende Vlaamse stadsbuurt waarin hy grootgeword het. Die vertelling is vol oordaad, uitweidings en doelbewuste vertragings, maar in die hande van Tom Lanoye word dit ’n stilistiese kragtoer. Dit is ’n meesleurende en oorrompelende boek.

Lear deur die gevierde Vlaamse skrywer Tom Lanoye. Elizabeth Lear
het met die verloop van tyd haar klein besigheid opgebou tot ’n
