Forensic Interventions for Therapy and Rehabilitation: Case Studies
and Analysis provides an up-to-date overview of the latest
therapeutic ideas being used for forensic service users and
prisoners in both custodial and community settings. The field of
forensic work is increasingly being recognised for its importance,
both in terms of the value of the work in reducing reoffending and
in terms of the salience given to it by the media, the public, and
politically. This text reflects current policy and practice, and
furthermore considers the therapeutic encounter from a broad
perspective, which incorporates individual, group, and systemic
interventions. Forensic Interventions for Therapy and
Rehabilitation includes chapters on a range of therapeutic models,
issues pertinent to specific groups of people with criminal
convictions, and discussion on the various contexts in which
interventions take place. Forensic Interventions for Therapy and
Rehabilitation is essential reading for all students of Forensic or
Clinical Psychology, as well as practitioners in the field.

This is the inspiring story of Lily, a puppy born with a rare
disability. Lily was only four minutes old, nursing at her mother's
side; already milk was pouring out of her nose and mouth, soaking
her and everything around her. Receiving so little nourishment, she
wasn't thriving, and within weeks she had a respiratory infection.
Euthanasia was compassionately suggested to spare her further
distress - even if she lived at all. Against all the odds, however,
her owner decided that this sweet little puppy should have a chance
at life. Laura weaned Lily early, letting her lick puppy mousse
from her fingertip. A month later, she was hand-feeding Lily pieces
of water-soaked puppy kibble one at a time during frequent feeds,
but still the puppy choked with almost every swallow. Eventually,
Lily was diagnosed with a swallowing disability ... extremely rare
... and incurable. Amazingly, Lily has survived against the odds
due to the creative and intensive management of her condition. Her
story may give hope to others, and inspire them not to give up
their animals who may have life-threatening conditions. Lily even
became a Pets As Therapy dog, and helps in schools and residential
care homes - she truly is a working miracle.
A heart-warming story for children, this is a tale of friendship,
bravery and kindness. Lily, a Golden Retriever, finds toy Doggie
lost and alone under a hedge. Trying to find Doggie's owner, Lily's
human mummy, Anne, ties Doggie to a lamppost where, she hopes, his
owner will see him. But Doggie waits unclaimed for days. He is even
bullied on the lamppost. He finds some of the nighttime animals who
visit him on the lamppost frightening, until they begin to help him
feel loved. After Anne takes him off the lamppost and into her home
with Lily and and her mum, Pilot, he has such amazing adventures
that he finds himself the star attraction at school when he joins
Lily for her Pets As Therapy Read2Dogs assignments. For his
compassionate part in helping animals have lives that matter, he
quickly becomes a media celebrity, and is even rewarded by royalty
at Buckingham Palace. Many characters and events in Doggie's story
are real, as the photos show. Charming, original illustrations by
the author seamlessly blend reality and fantasy. Doggie's story,
with Lily, Pilot and Anne, shows the value of love and friendship.
Clarifies the primary questions raised by the use of value-added
models (VAM) for measuring teacher effects, reviews the most
important recent applications of VAM, and discusses statistical and
measurement issues associated with VAM. Does value-added modeling
(VAM) demonstrate the importance of teachers to student outcomes?
The authors clarify the primary questions raised by VAM for
measuring teacher effects, review the most important recent
applications of VAM, and discuss a variety of statistical and
measurement issues that might affect the validity of VAM
inferences. The authors identify numerous possible sources of error
and bias in teacher effects and recommend a number of steps for
future research into these potential errors.
In our increasingly technological society, improving students'
performance in mathematics and science has become a critical
challenge. During the 1990s, the National Science Foundation funded
a series of Systemic Initiatives designed to change the way these
subjects are being taught in schools throughout the country. These
initiatives sought to align all aspects of the educational system
in support of ambitious curriculum and performance standards, with
particular emphasis on teacher training and professional
development to promote effective changes in instructional practice.
