Combinatorial Library - Methods and Protocols (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Lisa B English Combinatorial Library - Methods and Protocols (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Lisa B English
R4,231 Discovery Miles 42 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The continued successes of large- and small-scale genome sequencing projects are increasing the number of genomic targets available for drug d- covery at an exponential rate. In addition, a better understanding of molecular mechanisms-such as apoptosis, signal transduction, telomere control of ch- mosomes, cytoskeletal development, modulation of stress-related proteins, and cell surface display of antigens by the major histocompatibility complex m- ecules-has improved the probability of identifying the most promising genomic targets to counteract disease. As a result, developing and optimizing lead candidates for these targets and rapidly moving them into clinical trials is now a critical juncture in pharmaceutical research. Recent advances in com- natorial library synthesis, purification, and analysis techniques are not only increasing the numbers of compounds that can be tested against each specific genomic target, but are also speeding and improving the overall processes of lead discovery and optimization. There are two main approaches to combinatorial library production: p- allel chemical synthesis and split-and-mix chemical synthesis. These approaches can utilize solid- or solution-based synthetic methods, alone or in combination, although the majority of combinatorial library synthesis is still done on solid support. In a parallel synthesis, all the products are assembled separately in their own reaction vessels or microtiter plates. The array of rows and columns enables researchers to organize the building blocks to be c- bined, and provides an easy way to identify compounds in a particular well.

Lisa B. Fiore
R4,216 Discovery Miles 42 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In an era where assessment mandates tend to minimize or dismiss individual differences and creativity, resulting in punitive outcomes or inertia, this essential guide provides teachers with a collaborative approach to assessment that emphasizes the importance of bringing children and families into the process. Now in its second edition, Assessment of Young Children explores both standardized and authentic assessment, work sampling systems, and observation skills. Fully updated with current standards and research, this new edition also features an enhanced focus on trauma-informed practices, culturally and linguistically diverse learners, and family involvement. Lively and engaging, chapters help readers cultivate developmentally appropriate practice, create appropriate expectations, examine and celebrate children's work, interact in groups, and improve their reflective teaching. Accounts of real experiences from children, families, teachers, and administrators provide on-the-ground models of assessment strategies and demonstrate how children are affected. Exploring a variety of ways to observe and assess young children in their natural environments, this critical volume encourages an assessment strategy where the child remains the focus and collaboration with children, families, and colleagues creates an image - not a diagnosis - of the child that is empowering rather than constraining.

Single Black Female (Paperback, New): Lisa B. Thompson Single Black Female (Paperback, New)
Lisa B. Thompson
R354 Discovery Miles 3 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Genre: Comedy Characters: 2f Scenery: Simple Set

Single Black Female is a two-woman show with rapid-fire comic vignettes that explore the lives of thirty-something African American middle class women as they search for love, clothes and dignity in a world that fails to recognize them amongst a parade of stereotypical images. SBF 1, an English literature professor, and SBF 2, a corporate lawyer, keep each other balanced as they face their fears of rejection, hopes for romance and reminisce about black girlhood wounds. While embodying a variety of characters, the girlfriends discuss the absurdities of interracial dating, the lure of recreational shopping and the merits of college reunions for bolstering one's self-esteem. After reviewing their escapades in past relationships and confessing their own mounting anxieties about commitment and the possibility of motherhood, the pair realize their best chance at love may be found closer than they ever imagined.

Nominated for a 2004 L.A. Weekly Theater Award for Best Comedy

"A socially significant and very entertaining two-woman show that manages to be simultaneously self deprecating and proud." - The New York Times

"Fresh...hugely entertaining theater." - Variety

"Perfectly suited for the post-Sex and the City woman." - Backstage

"Thompson stands her stereotypes on their heads, to apt and funny effect. These right-on feminist sisters want equal rights and equal pay, but they also yearn for steamy romance and Jimmy Choo shoes, not necessarily in that order." - The Los Angeles Times

"A bracing, funny, bittersweet...show that is both bigger than life and wondrously small, with plenty of notes in between." - L.A. Weekly

The Ghostly and the Ghosted in Literature and Film - Spectral Identities (Hardcover): Lisa B. Kroeger, Melanie Anderson The Ghostly and the Ghosted in Literature and Film - Spectral Identities (Hardcover)
Lisa B. Kroeger, Melanie Anderson
R2,313 Discovery Miles 23 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Ghostly and the Ghosted in Literature and Film: Spectral Identities is a collection of essays aimed at expanding the concepts of ghost and haunting beyond literary tools used to add supernatural flavor to include questions of identity, visibility, memory and trauma, and history. Using a wide scope of texts from varying time periods and cultures, including fiction and film, this collection explores the phenomenon of social ghosts. What does it mean, for example, to be invisible, to be a ghost, particularly when that ghost is representative of a person or group living on the margins of society? Why do specific types of ghosts tend to haunt certain cultures and/or places? What is it about a people's history that invites these types of hauntings? The essays in this book, like pieces of a puzzle, approach the larger questions from diverse individual perspectives, but, taken together, they offer a richly detailed composite discussion of what it means to be haunted.

The new edition of The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Schizophrenia plumbs the current state of knowledge about the disorder's origin, nature, and treatment in a comprehensive, authoritative, and thoroughly revised text. Schizophrenia is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and remains among the most challenging and disheartening disorders confronting psychiatrists and other mental health care providers because of its profound effects on patient functioning, its onset just as young adults are launching their lives, and the limitations of current pharmacological treatments. Designed to bring the reader up to date on the latest research, this new edition represents a complete overhaul of the previous text, with a new structure, new chapters, and new contributors. Subjects such as genetics and neurobiology, distinguished by rapid advancements in knowledge, are explored in depth, as are new models of service delivery and psychosocial treatments that are making a significant difference in patients' lives. Foundational information on the epidemiology, etiology, and psychopathology of the illness is presented clearly and cogently, emphasizing research conducted over the last decade. Theories regarding the pathophysiological basis of the disorder, including genetic, molecular, and neurocircuitry models, are examined in detail. Other noteworthy topics include: * Cultural variations, examining how culture influences the presentation of schizophrenia from the perspective of the experts in cultural psychiatry who developed the DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview* Service delivery models, including assertive community treatment, critical time intervention, coordinated specialty care for early psychosis, and integrated dual diagnosis, informing clinicians about options for providing treatment to individuals with schizophrenia* Advances in the existing pharmacological treatments, including use of adjunctive medications and combinations of antipsychotics, which, in the absence of new drug therapies, is indispensable knowledge* A review of the promising field of neuromodulation* Evaluation and treatment of comorbidities, such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and substance use disorders, vital information because over half of people with schizophrenia have at least one co-occurring behavioral health disorder* Individual- and family-centered care, which presents the rationale and evidence for actively involving patients and family members in interventions and decision-making about treatments Designed for ease of use, The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Schizophrenia furnishes evidence-based and cutting-edge knowledge for the next generation of students, trainees, and clinicians.

Van Nguyen-Marshall, Lisa B. Welch Drummond, Daniele Belanger
R2,652 Discovery Miles 26 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This pioneering collection brings together an international group of scholars to explore the Vietnamese middle class. From the leisure pursuits of the colonial middle class to the impact of the new urban rich on landscape of the countryside, this interdisciplinary volume explores the ways in which middle classness has been practiced in a wide range of contexts throughout the 20th century and into the 21st. In addition to offering insights into how middle classness was and is constituted and negotiated, this collection illuminates the cultural and social conditions of two distinctive periods in Vietnamese history. Three historical chapters consider how middle class status was experienced and displayed under French colonialism and in 1960s republican. These chapters offer examinations of middle classness through recreation, consumption, and associational life. Six contemporary studies examine the modes of experimentation and practice within middle class urban Vietnam. Still a sensitive topic politically, the contemporary middle class, nascent but increasingly powerful, is exerting a strong impact on the shape of contemporary society and culture, as well as on urban and rural landscapes. This volume offers a series of studies which critically interrogate the practices of those who engage in or aspire to urban middle-class lifestyles in Vietnam both in the past and in the present.
