Reimagining Instructional Supervision - Supervising Knowledge Work (Paperback): Francis M. Duffy Reimagining Instructional Supervision - Supervising Knowledge Work (Paperback)
Francis M. Duffy
R904 Discovery Miles 9 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The history of instructional supervision has been relatively constant. From the days when the first colonists arrived and established schools for their children until today instructional supervision has consistently focused on the critical examination of a teacher's classroom behavior with the assumption that supervising individual teachers could significantly improve teaching and learning throughout a school system. That assumption has proven to be flawed. The author believes that the focus of instructional supervision needs to shift off of individual teachers to focus on transforming the organization design and functioning of entire school systems. Instead of observing teachers working in their classrooms a re-imagined instructional supervision process would focus on transforming three sets of key system variables: Transform the system's environmental relationships, transform the system's core and support work processes, and transform the system's internal social infrastructure. Supervising Knowledge Work describes the salient features of a re-imagined supervision process called Knowledge Work Supervision that is designed to transform entire school systems.

Constructivism and the Technology of Instruction - A Conversation (Hardcover): Thomas M. Duffy, David H Jonassen Constructivism and the Technology of Instruction - A Conversation (Hardcover)
Thomas M. Duffy, David H Jonassen
R5,400 Discovery Miles 54 000 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is about the implications of constructivism for instructional design practices, and more importantly, it is about a dialogue between instructional developers and learning theorists. Working with colleagues in each discipline, the editors were amazed to find a general lack of familiarity with each others' work. From an instructional design perspective, it seems that the practice of instructional design must be based on some conception of how people learn and what it means to learn. From a learning theory perspective, it seems obvious that the value of learning theory rests in the ability to predict the impact of alternative learning environments or instructional practices on what is learned. Thus the interchange of ideas between these disciplines is essential. As a consequence of both the information rich environment and the technological capability, business is seen moving away from a fixed curriculum and toward providing information and instruction when it is needed. These changes bring about a window of opportunity establishing a dialogue that will provide for a richer understanding of learning and the instructional environment required to achieve that learning. The editors hope that this book is the beginning of the conversation and that it will serve to spur continued conversation between those involved in learning theory and those involved in the design of instruction.

It examines the fine balance, between complying with the CRPD while still delivering practical, humane, and implementable legislation. It explores how this legislation was shaped by the WHO standards and provides insights into areas where the Indian legislators deviated from these guidelines and why. Taking India as an example, it highlights what is possible in other low- and middle-income countries. Further it covers key issues in mental health, identifying potential competing interests and exploring the difficulties and limitations of international guidelines. The book is a valuable resource for psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, non-governmental organizations and all mental healthcare workers in India and anyone studying human rights law.

Strategic Communication During Whole-System Change - Advice and Guidance for School District Leaders and PR Specialists... Strategic Communication During Whole-System Change - Advice and Guidance for School District Leaders and PR Specialists (Hardcover)
Francis M. Duffy, Patti L Chance
R2,693 Discovery Miles 26 930 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Times of great change in school districts require strategic communication with internal and external stakeholders including the use of school public relations tools and techniques. Strategic Communication During Whole System Change provides theoretical and practical advice and guidance to district-based change leaders and school public relations specialists on how they can support their district's transformation journey by engaging in strategic communication. The book also provides guidance on how to make simultaneous fundamental changes in three key sets (or change paths) of organizational variables that affect a school system's overall performance: Path 1-a district's relationship with stakeholders in the external environment; Path 2- a district's core and supporting work processes; and Path 3- a district's internal social infrastructure. A collection of essays written by school public relations practitioners and other change leaders who share their views is also included.

Constructivist Instruction - Success or Failure? (Paperback): Sigmund Tobias, Thomas M. Duffy Constructivist Instruction - Success or Failure? (Paperback)
Sigmund Tobias, Thomas M. Duffy
R1,984 Discovery Miles 19 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Constructivist Instruction: Success or Failure? brings together leading thinkers from both sides of the hotly debated controversy about constructivist approaches to instruction. Although constructivist theories and practice now dominate the fields of the learning sciences, instructional technology, curriculum and teaching, and educational psychology, they have also been the subject of sharp criticism regarding sparse research support and adverse research findings. This volume presents:

  • the evidence for and against constructivism;
  • the challenges from information-processing theorists; and
  • commentaries from leading researchers in areas such as text comprehension, technology, as well as math and science education, who discuss the constructivist framework from their perspectives.

Chapters present detailed views from both sides of the controversy. A distinctive feature of the book is the dialogue built into it between the different positions. Each chapter concludes with discussions in which two authors with opposing views raise questions about the chapter, followed by the author(s) responses to those questions; for some chapters there are several cycles of questions and answers. These discussions, and concluding chapters by the editors, clarify, and occasionally narrow the differences between positions and identify needed research.

Learner-Centered Theory and Practice in Distance Education - Cases From Higher Education (Paperback, New): Thomas M. Duffy,... Learner-Centered Theory and Practice in Distance Education - Cases From Higher Education (Paperback, New)
Thomas M. Duffy, Jamie R Kirkley
R2,250 Discovery Miles 22 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Learner-Centered Theory and Practice in Distance Education: Cases From Higher Education brings the voice of the learning sciences to the study and design of distance learning. The contributors examine critical issues in the design of theoretically and pedagogically based distance education programs. Eight distance education programs are described in enough detail to allow readers with different interests to understand the pedagogical approaches and the implications of implementing those approaches. Issues of theory, pedagogy, design, assessment, communities of practice, collaboration, and faculty development are discussed. Each section of the book includes: *a primary chapter written by an author or authors involved with a distance education program that reflects learner-centered principles; *a formal reaction to the chapter by a specialist from the learning sciences, educational evaluation and policy, administration, or the corporate sector with expertise in issues of distance learning; and *an edited transcript of the authors' discussion of the primary chapter held at a symposium at the Asilomar Conference Center. A final "summing up" section offers two perspectives--from leading scholars outside the fields of instructional design, evaluation, and the learning sciences--on the approaches and thinking reflected in the rest of the book. This book is essential for researchers, as well as all those engaged in delivering, supporting, or administrating distance education programs at the post-secondary level. The descriptions, strategies, and principles will inform the design of continuing education, as well as degree-based education and corporate education and training, and distance education programs for adults.

Balancing Principles for Teaching Elementary Reading (Hardcover): James V. Hoffman, Peter Afflerbach, Ann M. Duffy-Hester,... Balancing Principles for Teaching Elementary Reading (Hardcover)
James V. Hoffman, Peter Afflerbach, Ann M. Duffy-Hester, Sarah J. McCarthey, James F. Baumann
R4,464 Discovery Miles 44 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book appears at a time when the crisis rhetoric about schools, teaching, and learning to read is extremely high. There is a rising call within the profession for a balanced perspective on reading. "Balancing Principles for Teaching Elementary Reading" aspires to help set the agenda for improving the quality of literacy instruction in the United States--by recentering the debate from "What's better, 'whole language' or 'phonics'?" to "What can we do in reading instruction to prepare all children for the literacy demands of the next century?"
The authors, all members of the professional community of reading educators, work on a daily basis with teachers in classrooms, prospective teachers, clinicians, and tutors. Their goal for this book is to represent what they have learned about effective teaching and learning as members of this community. It is written with four purposes in mind:
* to offer a principled conception of reading and learning to read that is considerate of both the personal dimensions of literacy acquisition as well as the changes that are taking place in society,
* to summarize key findings from the research that relate specifically to effective teaching practices,
* to describe current practices in reading instruction with specific comparisons to the principles of effective practice that are identified, and
* to suggest an action agenda that is school-based and designed to promote positive changes in the quality of instruction.
This text offers a perspective for teaching that provokes members of the reading education community to think about their underlying beliefs about teaching and their shared commitment to making schools more effective for the students they serve. It is envisioned as a resource to be used in building a community of learners--to be read with professional colleagues in a course of study, in a teacher-researcher book club, or in some type of in-service setting. Readers are encouraged to debate the ideas presented, to challenge the authors' conceptions with their own reality, to make sense within a community about what action is desirable. Some specific suggestions and strategies are provided as springboards for further exploration and action.

Homilies (Hardcover): Sophronios Of Jerusalem Homilies (Hardcover)
Sophronios Of Jerusalem; Edited by John M. Duffy
R813 Discovery Miles 8 130 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Sophronios, born in Damascus around 560, was a highly educated monk and prolific writer who spent much of his life traveling in the Eastern Roman Empire and promoting the doctrines of the controversial Council of Chalcedon (451). The Homilies—like his poetry, biographies, and miracle accounts—bear eloquent testimony to his tireless struggle on behalf of Orthodoxy and the Christian way of life. The seven sermons collected here were delivered during his short tenure, at his life’s end, as patriarch of Jerusalem (634–638). He saw the Holy City capitulate to the Arab army (638). His Nativity Sermon (634), given while Bethlehem was under siege and his congregation was barred from the annual procession from Jerusalem to the birthplace of Christ, vividly reflects the approach of Islamic forces. Other targets of his venom include pagans, Jews, and despised heretics of all hues. Based on a completely new edition of the Byzantine Greek text, this is the first English translation of the homilies of Sophronios.

Step-Up-To-Excellence - An Innovative Approach to Managing and Rewarding Performance in School Systems (Paperback): Francis M.... Step-Up-To-Excellence - An Innovative Approach to Managing and Rewarding Performance in School Systems (Paperback)
Francis M. Duffy
R1,503 Discovery Miles 15 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This handbook is designed to answer two basic questions for educational practitioners. The first is how educators may redesign an entire school system to perform at the highest optimum levels. The second - and no less important - is what exactly educational administrators may do not only to manage, but also to reward the performance that sustains those very improvements. The work should be of interest to the K-12 administrator, the teacher and school board member, the consultant, professors teaching topical courses, or any layperson interested in the issue of school improvement.

Designing Environments for Constructive Learning (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993): T.M. Welsh Designing Environments for Constructive Learning (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993)
T.M. Welsh; Edited by Thomas M. Duffy, Joost Lowyck, David H Jonassen
R3,162 Discovery Miles 31 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The idea for this book grew out of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held at the Catholic University at Leuven, Belgium. We are grateful to NATO for support in conducting this workshop and for support in the preparation of this book. We are particularly grateful for their emphasis on designing the workshop to build collegiality. They suggested that we hold the meeting in a small town and that we organize evening activities to keep the group together and to promote informal and extended discussions. What sage advice. The excitement grew over the three days as we shared understandings and enriched our perspectives. Indeed, there was even a proclaimed "near" conversion to a constructivist perspective from one colleague trained in traditional instructional design methods. While we report this as a bit of a humorous anecdote, it most clearly reflects the sense of excitement that developed. We would also like to thank the staff at the Catholic University for their great support during the workshop. Their efforts and their good cheer were important components in the success of the meeting. In particular we would like to thank Jan Elen, Catherine Vermunicht and Jef Vanden Branden. Finally we would like to thank the personnel at Indiana University for their help in assembling this book. Deborah Shaw prepared the index. We thank her for the skill and speed with which she was able to work.

The Return of Hans Staden - A Go-between in the Atlantic World (Hardcover, New): Eve M Duffy, Alida C. Metcalf The Return of Hans Staden - A Go-between in the Atlantic World (Hardcover, New)
Eve M Duffy, Alida C. Metcalf
R1,540 Discovery Miles 15 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Hans Staden's sixteenth-century account of shipwreck and captivity by the Tupinamba Indians of Brazil was an early modern bestseller. This retelling of the German sailor's eyewitness account known as the " True History" shows both why it was so popular at the time and why it remains an important tool for understanding the opening of the Atlantic world.

Eve M. Duffy and Alida C. Metcalf carefully reconstruct Staden's life as a German soldier, his two expeditions to the Americas, and his subsequent shipwreck, captivity, brush with cannibalism, escape, and return. The authors explore how these events and experiences were recreated in the text and images of the " True History." Focusing on Staden's multiple roles as a go-between, Duffy and Metcalf address many of the issues that emerge when cultures come into contact and conflict.

An artful and accessible interpretation, "The Return of Hans Staden" takes a text best known for its sensational tale of cannibalism and shows how it can be reinterpreted as a window into the precariousness of lives on both sides of early modern encounters, when such issues as truth and lying, violence, religious belief, and cultural difference were key to the formation of the Atlantic world.
