The Politics of James Bond - From Fleming's Novels to the Big Screen (Hardcover): Jeremy M Black The Politics of James Bond - From Fleming's Novels to the Big Screen (Hardcover)
Jeremy M Black
R1,362 Discovery Miles 13 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The adventures and antics of James Bond have provided the world with many of the most gripping story lines of the last half-century. Fleming's novels were best-sellers in their day, and the Bond films have been even more popular, becoming the most enduring and successful film franchise in history. By some estimates, half of the world's population--billions of people--have seen a James Bond movie, thus viewing an image of global struggle through Western eyes and obtaining a particular perception of Britain and the world. This fascinating and accessible account of the global phenomenon uses the plots and characterizations in the novels and the blockbuster films to place Bond in a historical, cultural, and political context.

Black charts and explores how the settings and the dynamics of the Bond adventures have changed over time in response to shifts in the real-world environment in which the fictional Bond operates. Sex, race, class, and violence are each important factors as 007 evolves from Cold Warrior to foe of SPECTRE and eventually to world defender pitted against megalomaniacal foes. The development of Bond, his leading ladies, and the major plots all shed light on world political attitudes and reflect elements of the real espionage history of the period. This look at Bond's world and his lasting legacy offers an intriguing glimpse into both cultural history and popular entertainment.

A Military History of Britain - From 1775 to the Present (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Jeremy M Black A Military History of Britain - From 1775 to the Present (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Jeremy M Black
R2,688 Discovery Miles 26 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Starting his account at a time when Britain was poised to rule the world's oceans—and much of its land as well—prolific historian Jeremy Black details the nation's involvement in global affairs from the late-18th century to the present. A Military History of Britain is an account of military structures and cultures, and relevant socio-political contexts, as well as of conflicts. As in all of his writing, Black seeks to challenge conventional assumptions and offer illuminating new perspectives. Black begins by setting the background to British military history, in particular the anti-(large) army ideology, the maritime tradition, and the growing geo-political rivalry with France. After the defeat of the French in North America, Britain would become the world's leading maritime power. The 19th Century would see tension between Britain and the new United States, France, Germany, and an increasing emphasis on imperial conquests. Organized in three parts: Britain as Imperial Parent; Britain as Imperial Rival; and Britain as Imperial Partner. A primary focus of this account will be the 20th century, examining Britain and World War I (including Britain as a world power and issues of imperial overstretch) and World War II (and the subsequent wars of Imperial Retention in Malaya, Kenya, and Cyprus). As in all of his writing, Black seeks to challenge conventional assumptions, and offer illuminating new perspectives. Black details the involvement of Britain in global affairs up to the present. Recent issues of continuing importance include Britain as a nuclear power, the end of the East of Suez policy, NATO membership; out-of-area conflict (from the Falklands to Iraq), and the adjustment to new global roles. This wide-ranging and broadly-based account is designed for students and for the general reader.

Lawrence's England - The Major Fiction, 1913-20 (Hardcover): M. Black Lawrence's England - The Major Fiction, 1913-20 (Hardcover)
M. Black
R1,473 Discovery Miles 14 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Michael Black's third volume of commentary arrives at the peak of Lawrence's achievement: the fiction of the War years, 1913-20. He takes off from an analysis of Lawrence's writing method, a succession of spontaneous drafts, cumulatively rewritten into substantial structures of great complexity. Two surviving uncompleted drafts post- Sons and Lovers show him seeking for a theme, and also a method of representing consciousness.Substantial analyses of The Rainbow,The short stories in England, My England, and Women in Love take first an historical and then a contemporary account of the England Lawrence was about to leave. An important theme is the development of a post-Christian spirituality alongside the quest for a new understanding of love between men and women, and men and men. Black draws on the new Cambridge text, and editorial work on it, to provide new insights into Lawrence's writing.

The Age of Total War, 1860-1945 (Hardcover): Jeremy M Black The Age of Total War, 1860-1945 (Hardcover)
Jeremy M Black
R1,620 Discovery Miles 16 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is total war? Definitions abound, but one thing is certain-- the concept of total war has come to be seen as a defining concept of the modern age. Celebrated historian Jeremy Black explores the rise and demise of an era of total war, which he defines in terms of the intensity of the struggle, the range (geographical and/or chronological) of conflict, the nature of the goals, and the extent to which civil society was involved. He contends that this era (roughly 1860-1945) was markedly different from the warfare that characterized earlier periods; and that it is very different from the situation that has evolved since, with its emphasis on asymmetrical conflict and limited warfare. Acknowledging that various definitions are problematic and often contradictory, Black argues that 1860 to 1945 was an era in which the prospect of war and the consequences of it were "crucially important for human history." He focuses primarily on conflict between Western powers, including Japanese participation in the Russo-Japanese War. Trends and developments subsequent to 1945 have combined, Black asserts, to make a return to total war unlikely.

Why Things Matter - The Place of Values in Science, Psychoanalysis and Religion (Hardcover, New): David M. Black Why Things Matter - The Place of Values in Science, Psychoanalysis and Religion (Hardcover, New)
David M. Black
R3,402 Discovery Miles 34 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book, David M. Black asks questions such as 'why do we care?' and 'what gives our values power?' using ideas from psychoanalysis and its adjacent sciences such as neuroscience and evolutionary biology in order to do so.

Why Things Matter explores how the comparatively new scientific discipline of consciousness studies requires us to recognize that subjectivity is as irreducible a feature of the world as matter and energy. Necessarily inter-disciplinary, this book draws on science, philosophy and the history of religion to argue that there can be influential values which are not based exclusively on biological need or capricious life-style choices. It suggests that many recent scientific critics of religion, including Freud, have failed to see clearly the issues at stake.

This book will be key reading for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists as well as counsellors with an interest in the basis of religious feeling and in moral and aesthetic values. The book will also be of interest to scholars of psychoanalysis, philosophy and religion.

Psychoanalysis and Religion in the 21st Century - Competitors or Collaborators? (Hardcover): David M. Black Psychoanalysis and Religion in the 21st Century - Competitors or Collaborators? (Hardcover)
David M. Black
R3,418 Discovery Miles 34 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What can be gained from a dialogue between psychoanalysis and religion? Freud described religion as the universal obsessional neurosis, and uncompromisingly rejected it in favour of "science." Ever since, there has been the assumption that psychoanalysts are hostile to religion. Yet, from the beginning, individual analysts have questioned Freud's blanket rejection of religion. In this book, David Black brings together contributors from a wide range of schools and movements to discuss the issues. They bring a fresh perspective to the subject of religion and psychoanalysis, answering vital questions such as: How do religious stories carry (or distort) psychological truth? How do religions 'work', psychologically? What is the nature of religious experience? Are there parallels between psychoanalysis and particular religious traditions? Psychoanalysis and Religion in the 21st Century will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic therapists, psychodynamic counsellors, and anyone interested in the issues surrounding psychoanalysis, religion, theology and spirituality.

The Unity of Science (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback): Rudolf Carnap The Unity of Science (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback)
Rudolf Carnap; Translated by M. Black
R1,021 Discovery Miles 10 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As a leading member of the Vienna Circle, Rudolph Carnap's aim was to bring about a "unified science" by applying a method of logical analysis to the empirical data of all the sciences. This work, first published in English in 1934, endeavors to work out a way in which the observation statements required for verification are not private to the observer. The work shows the strong influence of Wittgenstein, Russell, and Frege.

Neuropathology - A Guide for Practising Pathologists (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001): S. Love Neuropathology - A Guide for Practising Pathologists (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001)
S. Love; Contributions by M. Black, D. W. Ellison, J.F. Geddes, D.I. Graham, …
R3,269 Discovery Miles 32 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In commissioning this volume of Current Topics in Pathology, the editor of the series, Prof. Sir Colin Berry, asked me to produce something "which is aimed at the general pathologist but from the point of view of the neuropathologist who knows what is not being done well." This was easier said than done. Many aspects of neuropathology are encountered only infrequently in general pathology and are best dealt with by re ferral of material to a specialist unit. Others need more extensive investigation than is practicable in a general pathology setting. Yet neurological disorders in general are common and are encountered by general histopathologists, paediatric and forensic pathologists on a daily basis, particularly in autopsy practice. In inviting contributions to this volume of Current Topics in Pathology, I therefore biased the con tents towards disorders in which the conduct of the autopsy and the initial approach to neuropathological investigation are of critical importance in making the diagnosis. The authors all have a wealth of experience and expertise and I believe that this is reflected in their approach, which is both personal and practical. Indeed, the emphasis in this book is very much on the provision of practical advice. All of the chapters contain guidelines on the conduct of autopsies as well as infor mation on the macroscopic and basic histological assessment of the nervous system in the relevant disorders."

Rhona M. Black
R1,980 Discovery Miles 19 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a revised and updated version of Rhona Black's successful and highly acclaimed textbook. Aimed at students approaching the subject for the first time, The Elements of Palaeontology achieves an approach simple enough for beginning students, yet with sufficient depth and breadth of coverage for those wishing to delve further into the early history of life. The author deals systematically with all the groups of fossilised organisms: invertebrates and vertebrates, microfossils, plants and trace fossils, describing their morphology and dealing briefly with the biological aspects of palaeontology. The relevant technical terms are clearly defined and a glossary is included for each of the main invertebrate groups. In this second edition, a chapter on trace fossils has been added, the chapter on microfossils expanded, and a section on pollens included with the plants. In each case the superb illustrations have been added to, with the inclusion of many new electron micrographs.

Programs to Reduce Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault - Perspectives on What Works (Paperback): Arlene N. Weisz, Beverly... Programs to Reduce Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault - Perspectives on What Works (Paperback)
Arlene N. Weisz, Beverly M. Black
R1,213 Discovery Miles 12 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Arlene Weisz and Beverly Black interview practitioners from more than fifty dating violence and sexual assault programs across the United States to provide a unique resource for effective teen dating violence prevention. Enhancing existing research with the shared wisdom of the nation's prevention community, Weisz and Black describe program goals and content, recruitment strategies, membership, structure, and community involvement in practitioners' own words. Their comprehensive approach reveals the core techniques that should be a part of any successful prevention program, including theoretical consistency, which contributes to sound content development, and peer education and youth leadership, which empower participants and keep programs relevant.

Weisz and Black show that multisession programs are most useful in preventing violence and assault, because they enable participants to learn new behaviors and change entrenched attitudes. Combining single- and mixed-gender sessions, as well as steering discussions away from the assignment of blame, also yield positive results. The authors demonstrate that productive education remains sensitive to differences in culture and sexual orientation and includes experiential exercises and role-playing. Manuals help in guiding educators and improving evaluation, but they should also allow adolescents to direct the discussion. Good programs regularly address teachers and parents. Ultimately, though, Weisz and Black find that the ideal program retains prevention educators long after the apprentice stage, encouraging self-evaluation and new interventions based on the wisdom that experience brings.

Lawrence's England - The Major Fiction, 1913-20 (Paperback, 1st ed. 2001): M. Black Lawrence's England - The Major Fiction, 1913-20 (Paperback, 1st ed. 2001)
M. Black
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written during and immediately after the 1914-18 War, Lawrence's major fictions - notably The Rainbow and Women in Love - trace the growth and contemplate the state of industrial England in the twentieth century. Michael Black's introductory chapters show the theoretical interest of Lawrence's writing-method, and how in discarded draft material he was seeking the narrative modes of the great novels which followed. The analysis of these finds Lawrence seeking a modern form of spirituality as well as rediscovered sexual relationships.

Courage in a Dangerous World - The Political Writings of Eleanor Roosevelt (Paperback, New): Allida M Black Courage in a Dangerous World - The Political Writings of Eleanor Roosevelt (Paperback, New)
Allida M Black
R1,077 Discovery Miles 10 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dozens of books have been written about Eleanor Roosevelt, but her own writings are largely confined to the Roosevelt archives in Hyde Park. "Courage in a Dangerous World" allows her own voice again to be heard. Noted Eleanor Roosevelt scholar Allida M. Black has gathered more than two hundred columns, articles, essays, and speeches culled from archives whose pages number in the millions, tracing her development from timorous columnist to one of liberalism's most outspoken leaders.

From "My Day" newspaper columns about Marian Anderson and excerpts from "Moral Basis of Democracy" and "This Troubled World" to speeches and articles on the Holocaust and McCarthyism, this anthology provides readers with the tools to reconstruct the politics of a woman who redefined American liberalism and democratic reform. Arranged chronologically and by topic, the volume covers the New Deal years, the White House years, World War II at home and abroad, the United Nations and human rights, the Cold War, the civil rights movement, the resurgence of feminism, and much more. In addition, the collection features excerpts from Eleanor Roosevelt's correspondence with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Adlai Stevenson, J. Edgar Hoover, John F. Kennedy, and ordinary Americans.

The volume features a collection of 30 rare photographs. A comprehensive bibliography of Eleanor Roosevelt's articles serves as a valuable resource, providing a link to the issues she held dear, many of which are still hotly debated today.

In pairs, male and female birds appear to work as a team, competing for food, defending nests, and protecting predators, but in fact, because each individual strives to maximize its own reproductive potential, conflicts can occur if one finds a better partner. So while some birds choose one mate for life, others have many partners. In this book, fourteen classic studies of bird behavior are brought together to compare the different partnership patterns from ecological and evolutionary perspectives. Particular attention is paid to the availability of mates, the selection process and the consequences of choosing one mate over another. By comparing between and within species, each chapter outlines the features that influence a pair's reproductive performance and how this interacts with ecological and environmental constraints. Introductory and concluding chapters review the latest thinking on this fascinating subject. The book is aimed at students and researchers in behavioral ecology but can also foster new insights for bird watchers and ornithologists.
