John Banville's Narcissistic Fictions is an exploration of
Banville's novels from the point of view of various psychoanalytic
understandings of the concept of narcissism. It presents this
increasingly central figure in contemporary fiction as a writer for
whom narcissism is both an essential truth of selfhood and a
fundamental aspect of the writing of fiction. Though it deals with
a number of theoretical concepts, it does so in a straightforward
and highly accessible manner. The book is not simply a reading of a
single, isolated aspect of Banville's work; rather, it presents
narcissism as the key to understanding this writer, and as a way of
bringing together the various disparate strands - thematic,
stylistic and formal - of his complex and enigmatic oeuvre.
In an increasingly global society, the ability to identify a
culture's visual aesthetics helps us localize messages for better
understanding and resonance with targeted audiences. But how do we
identify the visual cues that specific cultures respond to? Based
on Web design "best practices" and data collected from close to
2000 websites in more than 30 countries over a period of eight
years, this book defines a methodology for identifying patterns - a
"pattern language" - by which one can analyze the cultural
aesthetics of a website to: (1) learn more about the visual
communication patterns of a particular culture, (2) apply what is
learned to the creation of new Web communication, and (3) identify
trends in visual communication on the Web as influenced by emerging
technologies.

USA: ""Electrochemical Techniques in Bioanalysis""
One of this century's most eminent theologians addresses the
eternal questions of the relationship of good and evil, linking the
story of Job to the lives of the poor and oppressed of our world.
In reading Banville's novels through the work of key
psychoanalytical theorists, John Banville's Narcissistic Fictions
brings together apparently disparate thematic strands - missing
twins, shame, false identities - and presents these as
manifestations of a central concern with narcissism.
This publication is based on previous documentation of the
nationally standardized Forest Inventory and Analysis database
(Hansen and others 1992; Woudenberg and Farrenkopf 1995; Miles and
others 2001). Documentation of the structure of the Forest
Inventory and Analysis database (FIADB) for Phase 2 data, as well
as codes and definitions, is provided. Examples for producing
population level estimates are also presented. This database
provides a consistent framework for storing forest inventory data
across all ownerships for the entire United States. Forest
Inventory and Analysis (FIA) is a continuing endeavor mandated by
Congress in the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning
Act of 1974 and the McSweeney-McNary Forest Research Act of 1928.
FIA's primary objective is to determine the extent, condition,
volume, growth, and depletion of timber on the Nation's forest
land. Before 1999, all inventories were conducted on a periodic
basis. The passage of the 1998 Farm Bill requires FIA to collect
data annually on plots within each State. This kind of up-to-date
information is essential to frame realistic forest policies and
programs. USDA Forest Service regional research stations are
responsible for conducting these inventories and publishing summary
reports for individual States. In addition to published reports,
the Forest Service provides data collected in each inventory to
those interested in further analysis. This report describes a
standard format in which data can be obtained. This standard
format, referred to as the Forest Inventory and Analysis Database
(FIADB) structure, was developed to provide users with as much data
as possible in a consistent manner among States. A number of
inventories conducted prior to the implementation of the annual
inventory are available in the FIADB. However, various data
attributes may be empty or the items may have been collected or
computed differently. Annual inventories use a common plot design
and common data collection procedures nationwide, resulting in
greater consistency among FIA work units than earlier inventories.
Data field definitions note inconsistencies caused by different
sampling designs and processing methods.
