Scathing black comedy about love, sex, family, murder, incest and revenge, based on the 17th-century play by Shakespeare contemporary Thomas Middleton and transposed by subversive British director Alex Cox to a post-apocalyptic Liverpool. After ten years in hiding, Vindici (Christopher Eccleston) returns to destroy the Duke (Derek Jacobi) who murdered Vindici's wife on their wedding day. During his absence, Vindici's family fell into poverty - while the Duke, Duchess and their decadent sons acquired wealth and power, ruling over their court obsessed with transient beauty, money, inherited privilege and power. Determined to exact his revenge, Vindici sets out to gain the confidence of the Duke and his villainous heir, Lussurioso (Eddie Izzard). The film was screened at the 2002 Locarno Film Festival.
Director Mike Leigh takes a satirical look at middle-class values in the 70s. Upwardly mobile couple Beverley and Laurence host an informal drinks evening when their neighbour's teenage daughter, Abigail, throws a party. Tensions arise as bored, bitchy housewife Beverley (Alison Steadman) flirts with her new neighbour, patronises his wife, embarasses Abigail's mother Sue and drives her over-stressed husband to the point of no return.
Gideon Koppel directs this poetically-rendered portrait of Trefeurig, the small farming community in mid-Wales where he grew up. On a practical level, the isolated rural community struggles for survival as the local primary school is threatened with closure, traditional farming methods are rendered non-viable and key services disappear - but the community spirit and strong connection with nature ensure that many of the more intrinsic aspects of the old way of life are kept alive. Reminiscent of the works of Dylan Thomas in its subtle portrayal of rural life, the film combines striking cinematography with an ambient electronic soundtrack by Aphex Twin to pay homage to the filmmaker's birthplace and a way of life that could soon die out altogether.
Deric Longden's teleplay for this moving drama is based on his own experience of looking after his mother in her old age. Annie Longden (Thora Hird) is an eccentric OAP whose mind does not always operate upon logical lines. When she suffers a series of strokes, however, her mental condition deteriorates, and she becomes increasingly unable to use the correct words for everyday objects. Son Deric (Pete Postlethwaite) copes with Annie's gradual decline with patient good humour.
