This book examines the progress made in e-enabling the HR function
and the relationship with outsourcing. The editors review and
analyse recent developments in the application of outsourcing and
ICT to the HR function and its overall contribution to
organizational aims. This text aims to fill the gap in current
literature, by providing accessible guidance on how to tackle the
e-enablement of the function and on the factors associated with
successful outsourcing. There is no single text that adequately
deals with this increasingly important problem and which has been
recognised by the CIPD as a key area of research for their forward
programme. The contributors all have leading-edge knowledge and
practical experience and aim to provide practical guidance for
organizations and HR professionals. This work features practical
case studies illustrating the developments in the application of
outsourcing and ICT to the HR function.
In contrastive linguistics of English and German, there is a
tradition of accounting for contrasts with respect to grammar and,
to a lesser extent, for lexis and phonetics. Moving on to discourse
and text, there is a sizeable body of literature on cohesive
patterns in English and German respectively - but very little in
terms of a comparison. The latter, though, is of particular
interest for language learners, translators and, of course,
linguists and researchers in language technology. This book
attempts to close this gap, based on a number of years of
corpus-based study into variation and cohesion in the two
languages. While there is an overall focus on language contrasts,
it also investigates variation between different registers
language-internally, and between written and spoken mode in
particular. For each of the five major types of cohesion
(co-reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunctive relations and
lexical cohesion), overviews are given of contrasts in the system
and of contrastive frequencies in texts. Results and methods
presented in this book are thus relevant for language teaching,
translation, language technology and corpus-based work on English
and German generally.
With the recent and enormous increase in the amount of available
data sets of all kinds, applying effective and efficient techniques
for analyzing and extracting information from that data has become
a crucial task. Intelligent Data Analysis for Real-Life
Applications: Theory and Practice investigates the application of
Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) to these data sets through the
design and development of algorithms and techniques to extract
knowledge from databases. This pivotal reference explores practical
applications of IDA, and it is essential for academic and research
libraries as well as students, researchers, and educators in data
analysis, application development, and database management.
Principles of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics: Fundamentals for
Individualized Nutrition is the most comprehensive foundational
text on the complex topics of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics.
Edited by three leaders in the field with contributions from the
most well-cited researchers conducting groundbreaking research in
the field, the book covers how the genetic makeup influences the
response to foods and nutrients and how nutrients affect gene
expression. Principles of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics:
Fundamentals for Individualized Nutrition is broken into four parts
providing a valuable overview of genetics, nutrigenetics, and
nutrigenomics, and a conclusion that helps to translate research
into practice. With an overview of the background, evidence,
challenges, and opportunities in the field, readers will come away
with a strong understanding of how this new science is the frontier
of medical nutrition. Principles of Nutrigenetics and
Nutrigenomics: Fundamentals for Individualized Nutrition is a
valuable reference for students and researchers studying nutrition,
genetics, medicine, and related fields.
This cutting-edge introduction for all modern courses in
Organizational Behaviour and Management has been thoroughly updated
for the fifth edition. New material has been added, including a new
chapter on complexity, change and development and increased
material on learning and human resource management. Informed by the
latest research, Martin & Fellenz walk carefully through the
fundamental topics with a focus on key issues - globalization and
culture, ethics and corporate social responsibility, competitive
pressures and organizational change - to leave students with a
practical and open-minded grasp of organizational behaviour in the
twenty-first century.
This book provides an overview of the design, synthesis, and
characterization of different photoactive hybrid organic-inorganic
materials, based on the combination of mainly organic molecules and
inorganic nanostructures, tackling their uses in different
scientific fields from photonics to biomedicine. There are many
examples extensively describing how the confinement of organic
compounds (i.e. chromophores, photochromic molecules or
photoreactants), or other photoactive compounds (i.e.metal
clusters) into several microporous systems can modulate the
photophysical properties and photochemical reactions leading to
interesting applications. Among (ordered)-hosts, different systems
of diverse nature are widely used, such as the, the 1D- or 3D-
channels of zeolitic frameworks, interlayer space of 2D-clays, the
organic nanospace of curcubituril and cyclodextrins or the
organo-inorganic porous crystalline MOFs systems. This volume
highlights the advances of these photoactive materials and aims to
be an inspiration for researchers working in materials science and
photochemistry, including chemists, material engineers, physicists,
biologists, and medical researchers.
An indispensable guide to visual ethics, this book addresses the
need for critical thinking and ethical behavior among students and
professionals responsible for a variety of mass media visual
messages. Written for an ever-growing discipline, authors Paul
Martin Lester, Stephanie A. Martin, and Martin Rodden-Smith give
serious ethical consideration to the complex field of visual
communication. The book covers the definitions and uses of six
philosophies, analytical methods, cultural awareness, visual
reporting, documentary, citizen journalists, advertising, public
relations, typography, graphic design, data visualizations,
cartoons, motion pictures, television, computers and the web,
augmented and virtual reality, social media, the editing process,
and the need for empathy. At the end of each chapter are case
studies for further analysis and interviews with thoughtful
practitioners in each field of study, including Steven Heller and
Nigel Holmes. This second edition has also been fully revised and
updated throughout to reflect on the impact of new and emerging
technologies. This book is an important resource for students of
photojournalism, photography, filmmaking, media and communication,
and visual communication, as well as professionals working in these
fields.

This Guide assesses the key clinimetric attributes in the
assessment of Parkinson's Disease (PD), with the intention to offer
rapid and pragmatic information on the most relevant scales used in
PD. Parkinson's disease affects approximately 4 million people
globally and is most commonly seen in people over the age of 50.
The disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system, and
presents a number of movement and cognitive symptoms, thereby
greatly affecting a patients quality of life. The use of scales for
assessment in neurological disorders such as PD arises from the
need to quantify disorders and states (such constructs as
disability, symptoms, quality of life). Assessment scales are often
categorised into two categories: generic (i.e. those scales usable
in any health condition), and specific (i.e. scales developed for
exclusive use in PD). They can have a variety of components:
single-item and multi-item or composite scale; unidimensional and
multidimensional; and as disease-centered and patient-centered
measures. The creation and validation of scales is complex, with
scales undergoing numerous studies to assess criteria such as
acceptability, reliability, and responsiveness. In the process of
validation of a scale the following attributes should be tested to
ascertain whether a scale is an effective instrument of
measurement.
