A generously illustrated look at the intricate narrative threads of
three of the artist's earliest works, and their continued resonance
today Celebrated for works blending performance, video, and
sculpture, Matthew Barney has created complex narratives that
emerge across series since his earliest exhibitions. Matthew
Barney: OTTO Trilogy is the first book to trace the progression of
three significant early projects-Facility of INCLINE, Facility of
DECLINE, and OTTOshaft- and to reveal the narrative system that
links them. Titled after former football player Jim Otto, the
series explores the training, discipline, and physical limits of
the body alongside questions of sexual difference and desire.
Featuring an illuminating introduction by Nancy Spector; an essay
by Maggie Nelson on the works' exploration of psychology, bodies,
image-making, narrative, and abstraction; and a new text by the
artist, this generously illustrated volume includes previously
unpublished artist's sketches, behind-the-scenes photographs,
research material, and video stills. It is the definitive
publication on this important series, and offers a key to
understanding many of the themes that thread throughout Barney's
oeuvre. Distributed for the Gladstone Gallery Exhibition Schedule:
Gladstone Gallery, New York (09/08/16-10/22/16)
Over the course of about ten years, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Matthew
Barney met several times to discuss Barney's past work, current
projects and his plans for the future. The resulting collection of
interviews provides a rare insight into how the work and working
method of one of the most prominent artists of a generation has
developed over time, and uncovers the ideas, influences and
collaborations that lie behind his multi-layered and multimedia
creative output. The conversation covers all of his major pieces to
date, from the internationally acclaimed "Cremaster" cycle to the
somewhat less well-known "Drawing Restraint" series, as well as
looking at particular projects in more detail, such as the recent
"Khu" performance and Barney's participation in "Il Tempo del
Postino," curated by Obrist at the 2007 Manchester International
Festival.

During his long and illustrious career as a curator, Gerald Matt,
the current Director of Kunsthalle Vienna, had many insightful
conversations with the top artists of the day. Gathered here are 40
interviews with contemporary artists including Matthew Barney,
Vanessa Beecroft, Candice Breitz, Steve McQueen, Shirin Neshat,
Raymond Pettibon, Santiago Sierra, Francesco Vezzoli and Yang
Fudong, among others, accompanied by numerous color illustrations
of each artist's work. According to Matt, "The interviews gathered
together in this volume attempt to provide a panoramic overview of
contemporary artistic production modes without demystifying the
aesthetic puzzle with hasty answers. The point here is not to
exhibit shut and dried views of the world but to sketch open
systems that admit some space for continuing discourse. Allow
yourself to be carried forward by the flow of words without
expecting exhaustive help for your life. Entirely in keeping with
the motto that Raymond Pettibon wrote on one of his drawings:
'Whatever you are looking for, you won't find it here.'"
