Guarding the Pugin Flame (Hardcover): Michael Fisher Guarding the Pugin Flame (Hardcover)
Michael Fisher
R1,905 Discovery Miles 19 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When the premature death of A.W.N. Pugin (1812-1852) created a huge vacuum in the realm of Gothic-revival art and design, this was more than adequately filled by John Hardman Powell (1827-1895). Tutored personally - and uniquely - by Pugin, Powell now stepped into his master's shoes as chief designer for the Birmingham firm of John Hardman & Co. who manufactured metalwork, stained glass, and other furnishings for Pugin and for architects influenced by him. More than that, Powell was married to Pugin's eldest daughter, Anne (1832-1897) who bore him twelve children. Though rigorously trained by Pugin, Powell had a free-spirited artistic temperament, which, imbued with Pugin's 'True Principles' of medieval art and design, led him to apply them in innovative and imaginative ways. Researched from newly-discovered original sources, this book examines Powell's rich legacy of stained glass and metalwork which is still to be enjoyed in cathedrals, churches and great houses across the United Kingdom and overseas, and the ideas which shaped it. Powell's loyalty to his late Master extended to the younger members of Pugin's family, including the love-lorn Agnes and the hot-tempered Edward, and also to Pugin's widow Jane, whose social pretensions he mercilessly lampooned. Through his encouragement of artistic talent within his own family, his training of Hardman apprentices, his evening lectures in Birmingham, and his written tributes to his late Master, Powell ensured that the Pugin flame would continue to burn brightly well into the twentieth century.

R4,362 Discovery Miles 43 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Time is a fascinating subject and has long since captured mankind's imagination, from the ancients to modern man, both adult and child alike. It has been studied across a wide range of disciplines, from the natural sciences to philosophy and logic. Today, thirty plus years since Prior's work in laying out foundations for temporal logic, and two decades on from Pnueli's seminal work applying of temporal logic in specification and verification of computer programs, temporal logic has a strong and thriving international research community within the broad disciplines of computer science and artificial intelligence. Areas of activity include, but are certainly not restricted to: Pure Temporal Logic, e. g. temporal systems, proof theory, model theory, expressiveness and complexity issues, algebraic properties, application of game theory; Specification and Verification, e. g. of reactive systems, ofreal-time components, of user interaction, of hardware systems, techniques and tools for verification, execution and prototyping methods; Temporal Databases, e. g. temporal representation, temporal query ing, granularity of time, update mechanisms, active temporal data bases, hypothetical reasoning; Temporal Aspects in AI, e. g. modelling temporal phenomena, in terval temporal calculi, temporal nonmonotonicity, interaction of temporal reasoning with action/knowledge/belief logics, temporal planning; Tense and Aspect in Natural Language, e. g. models, ontologies, temporal quantifiers, connectives, prepositions, processing tempo ral statements; Temporal Theorem Proving, e. g. translation methods, clausal and non-clausal resolution, tableaux, automata-theoretic approaches, tools and practical systems."

The Marianne Williamson Presidential Phenomenon - Cultural (R)Evolution in a Dangerous Time (Hardcover, New edition): R.... The Marianne Williamson Presidential Phenomenon - Cultural (R)Evolution in a Dangerous Time (Hardcover, New edition)
R. Michael Fisher
R2,042 Discovery Miles 20 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The most important national election in U.S. history is underway. Marianne Williamson stepped-up to show she is confident to be president of the United States in 2020. She had to step down. Many people are supportive of her provocative healing vision for America, and that fan and voter-base is growing. She may run again in 2024. However, many are puzzled by her and many are critics on the Left and Right and in between. The book is a thorough case study of Williamson's speeches, writings, and interviews. It documents and analyzes the thoughts and feelings of her supporters and critics based on what they have written, performed, and published. It records history while it is being made. The author offers support and criticism of how Williamson's leadership and her team could have done things different so as to be more successful in the presidential campaign. The big idea throughout the book is to emphasize, as does Williamson's teaching, that spirituality and politics ought never be separated completely (as religion and the State), if we truly desire more than mere reforms of society, but desire a transformation to a truly better and more liberated world. The book highlights productive guideposts for Williamson and other leaders like Williamson in future campaigns. It offers Americans, and others, a view of "what happened" in 2019-20 that made Williamson an outstanding phenomenon. Students, scholars, journalists, politicians, and the general public interested in the improvement of politics will want to study this book.

Fearless Engagement of Four Arrows - The True Story of an Indigenous-Based Social Transformer (Hardcover, New edition): R.... Fearless Engagement of Four Arrows - The True Story of an Indigenous-Based Social Transformer (Hardcover, New edition)
R. Michael Fisher
R2,993 R2,778 Discovery Miles 27 780 Save R215 (7%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In times of extreme cascading global crises facing humanity, all responsible humans need to re-evaluate the dominant worldview that has brought us to this point of facing extinction. As a species we need to relearn the "good" ways from our greatest allies in Nature and from Indigenous cultures that lived in relative harmony with Nature. Equally, we need to learn the best ways to think critically and act on the holistic understanding that may guide us beyond our individual and collective trance and illusions cast forth like chains upon modern societies through elites who manipulate fear. Fearless Engagement of Four Arrows offers a unique strong "medicine" for the reconstruction of a healthy, sane, and sustainable future for all. Utilizing the form of an intellectual biography of Four Arrows (aka Dr. Don Trent Jacobs) and his daring activist life and true teaching stories, the author creates a powerful adventure into the firey philosophy, activism, and emancipatory inspirations of one of the world's great visionary prophetic educators and social transformers. Through a number of unique experiences, including firefighting, white-water kayaking, wild horse training, world-class athletic competitions, and counter-cultural activism, Four Arrows has become a connoisseur of fear and courage. This book shows how he walks a universal ethical path of Fearlessness at a time when too many remain trapped by their fears. Among other readers, high school teachers and post-secondary teachers across diverse disciplines will find great ideas, eliciting dialogues and study questions for students, who now face a globalizing world where they can take charge of the future via fearless engagement.

Verifiable Autonomous Systems - Using Rational Agents to Provide Assurance about Decisions Made by Machines (Hardcover): Louise... Verifiable Autonomous Systems - Using Rational Agents to Provide Assurance about Decisions Made by Machines (Hardcover)
Louise A. Dennis, Michael Fisher
R2,009 Discovery Miles 20 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How can we provide guarantees of behaviours for autonomous systems such as driverless cars? This tutorial text, for professionals, researchers and graduate students, explains how autonomous systems, from intelligent robots to driverless cars, can be programmed in ways that make them amenable to formal verification. The authors review specific definitions, applications and the unique future potential of autonomous systems, along with their impact on safer decisions and ethical behaviour. Topics discussed include the use of rational cognitive agent programming from the Beliefs-Desires-Intentions paradigm to control autonomous systems and the role model-checking in verifying the properties of this decision-making component. Several case studies concerning both the verification of autonomous systems and extensions to the framework beyond the model-checking of agent decision-makers are included, along with complete tutorials for the use of the freely-available verifiable cognitive agent toolkit Gwendolen, written in Java.

R. Michael Fisher
R1,605 Discovery Miles 16 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The World's Fearlessness Teachings addresses the human fear problem in a truly unique and insightful way, summarizing the teachings on fearlessness from around the world and throughout history. The author then utilizes critical integral theory (a la Wilber) as an approach to categorize the developmental and evolutionary spectrum of fear management systems known thus far. The author has spent twenty years researching the timely topic of fear and how to best manage and transform it. From this experience, he offers an educational healing vision to address the challenges of a dangerous 21st century. Fear's empire has taken rule. It is time to resist it using the best intelligence from both sacred and secular traditions, as well as the transformational theories humanity has to offer. Fisher maps out ten fear management systems that will benefit future-positive leaders everywhere.
