Teaching and Learning with Multimedia (Paperback): Janet Collins, Michael Hammond, Jerry Wellington Teaching and Learning with Multimedia (Paperback)
Janet Collins, Michael Hammond, Jerry Wellington
R1,485 Discovery Miles 14 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an introduction to the issues and practicalities of using multimedia in classrooms - both primary and secondary, and across a range of subject areas. The book draws on material from a range of case studies and focuses on areas of concern for teachers and researchers.
Using IT effectively continues to be a problem for many teachers, and there is still a long way to go toward organising this properly. The book takes a thorough look at IT in the school, discussing and examining issues such as:
* IT and the National Curriculum
* foreign language teaching
* differing curricular needs
* opportunities and constraints of groupwork
* talking books and primary reading
* ways in which multimedia supports readers.
The book also looks at some of the more philosophical issues such as the implications of home-computers and the limits of independent learning, and the notion of "edutainment" - the relationship of motivation and enjoyment to learning.
Finally, the book makes comparisons across the curriculum and between primary and secondary sectors and raises questions about the future of IT in schools, arguing that teachers should make a significant contribution to decisions about future development.

The book supports those undertaking their own social research projects by providing detailed critical commentary on key concepts in a particularly accessible way. In exploring these concepts, a wide range of research reports across many different fields are described. These include not only classic accounts, but also a broad selection of recent studies, some written by new researchers. The book will be useful for higher-education students carrying out projects within social science faculties at the end of their first degree or during a master's programme, though it will also be helpful for those undertaking doctoral research, and some entries have been written with the production of a thesis in mind. The Great War and the Moving Image (Paperback): Michael Hammond, Adrian. Smith The Great War and the Moving Image (Paperback)
Michael Hammond, Adrian. Smith
R1,172 Discovery Miles 11 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Great War and the Moving Image focuses upon the Allied war effort on the Western Front and in the Mediterranean. In doing so, the book addresses topics ranging from how carefully selected images projected a positive portrayal of ambulance trains, through film's instructional role promoting self-sufficiency on the home front, to the vital role of makeshift YMCA cinemas both sides of the Channel. With editors and contributors who are authorities on cinema in wartime Britain and on the British response to the challenge of 'total war', the volume highlights the power that the moving image had during the Great War. In the introduction, the editors consider why the First World War can be seen as the first uniquely cinematic conflict. Later, historians from Britain, Australia, and America go on to explore film's pioneering role as a powerful vehicle for propaganda at home and abroad, and its contribution to maintaining morale among soldiers on the front line as well as across civilian audiences back home. The book concludes by considering the representation of trench warfare in today's hi-tech computer games. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television.

Michael Hammond
R1,360 Discovery Miles 13 600 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Parenting young children is a challenge, and dealing with difficult or problem behavior can set up an atmosphere of tension and strife-not just between the child and the parents, but between parents as well. Parenting Difficult Children provides a method of removing that tension with specific strategies for parents of children age three to twelve who are exhibiting difficult or common negative behaviors. Young And Innocent? - The Cinema in Britain, 1896-1930 (Paperback): Andrew Higson Young And Innocent? - The Cinema in Britain, 1896-1930 (Paperback)
Andrew Higson; Contributions by Charles Barr, Stephen Bottomore, Neil Brand, Jon Burrows, …
R966 Discovery Miles 9 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together the study of silent cinema and the study of British cinema, both of which have seen some of the most exciting developments in Film Studies in recent years. The result is a comprehensive survey of one of the most important periods of film history. Most of the acknowledged experts on this period are represented, joined by several new voices. Together they chart the development of cinema in Britain from its beginnings in the 1890s to the conversion to sound in the late 1920s. From these accounts the youthful British cinema emerges as far from innocent. On the contrary, it was a fascinatingly complex field of cultural and industrial practices. The book also includes guides to bibliographical and archival sources and an extensive bibliography.

The Phonology of English - A Prosodic Optimality-Theoretic Approach (Paperback): Michael Hammond The Phonology of English - A Prosodic Optimality-Theoretic Approach (Paperback)
Michael Hammond
R1,702 Discovery Miles 17 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Phonology of English offers a new approach to English phonology. It focuses on the prosody of the language, i.e. syllable and foot structure, and does so from an optimality-theoretic (OT) perspective. The focus is on surface distributional regularities and the results presented are based on extensive searches through various computerized lexicons. The outcome is a number of new generalizations about the phonology of English, along with confirmation of some familiar regularities. All of these empirical results are discussed in detail and presented in extensive charts with a plethora of examples. The Phonology of English also offers a unique OT analysis. This provides a detailed introduction to the intricacies of the theory as applied to a significant amount of data. A number of important theoretical proposals are developed in this model, and the analysis presents the idea that certain complex constraints and their ranking can be derived in restricted ways from more basic constraints. In addition, the book also develops the idea that syllables of English can contain from zero to three moras. It is suggested that the phonology of English only makes sense if partial morphemes of the cranberry sort are licensed more widely. The book is thus intended as a detailed presentation of novel empirical results about the sound system of English, along with important theoretical results about phonological theory.

The Big Show - British Cinema Culture in the Great War (1914-1918) (Hardcover, New): Michael Hammond The Big Show - British Cinema Culture in the Great War (1914-1918) (Hardcover, New)
Michael Hammond
R2,406 Discovery Miles 24 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Big Show looks at the role played by cinema in British cultural life during World War One.

In writing the definitive account of film exhibition and reception in Britain in the years 1914 to 1918, Michael Hammond shows how the British film industry and British audiences responded to the traumatic effects of the Great War.

The author contends that the War's significant effect was to expedite the cultural acceptance of cinema into the fabric of British social life. As a result, by 1918, cinema had emerged as the predominant leisure form in British social life. Through a consideration of the films, the audience, the industry and the various regulating and censoring bodies, the book explores the impact of the war on the newly established cinema culture. It also studies the contribution of the new medium to the public's perception of the war
