First published in 1990. The book surveys of the development of German theatre from a market sideshow into an important element of cultural life and political expression. It examines Schiller as 'theatre poet' at Mannheim, Goethe's work as director of the court theatre at Weimar, and then traces the rapid commercial decline that made it difficult for Kleist and impossible for Buchner to see their plays staged in their own lifetime. Four representative texts are analysed: Schiller's The Robbers, Goethe's Iphigenia on Tauris, Kleist's The Prince of Homburg, and Buchner's Woyzeck. This title will be of interest to students of theatre and German literature.

Early productions of Kaiser's From Morning till Midnight and Toller's Transfiguration are presented as examples of Expressionism. A thorough analysis of Piscator's Hoppla, Such is Life! And Brecht's Man show the similarities and differences in political theatre. In addition, elements of stage-craft are examined - illustrated with tabulated information, an extensive chronology, and photographs and designs of productions.

This volume provides a theoretical framework for some of the most important play-writing in Britain in the second half of the twentieth century. Examining representative plays by Arnold Wesker, John Arden, Trevor Griffith, Howard Barker, Howard Brenton, Edward Bond, David Hare, John McGrath and Caryl Churchill, the author analyses their respective strategies for persuading audiences of the need for a radical restructuring of society. The book begins with a discussion of the way that theatre has been used to convey a political message. Each chapter is then devoted to an exploration of the engagement of individual playwrights with left-wing political theatre, including a detailed analysis of one of their major plays. Despite political change since the 1980s, political play-writing continues to be a significant element in contemporary play-writing, but in a very changed form.
Michael Patterson analyzes a group of twentieth century British playwrights' respective strategies for persuading audiences of the need for radical restructuring of society. He examines plays by Arnold Wesker, John Arden, Trevor Griffith, Howard Barker, Howard Brenton, Edward Bond, David Hare, John McGrath and Caryl Churchill. Each chapter is devoted to an exploration of the engagement of individual playwrights with left-wing political theatre, including a detailed analysis of one of their major plays.
First published in 1981, Michael Patterson's was the first book in any language to be devoted to the work of Germany's leading theatre director. Peter Stein's thoughtful and critical approach to a variety of dramatic texts - from Irish comedy to German classics, where his reputation largely rests - has resulted in a range of different acting and formal styles and some major textual adaptations. The rehearsing, performance and reception of these are thoroughly and vividly recreated here from interviews and archives and in the first-hand account of the workings of the theatre Stein made his own, the Schaubuhne in West Berlin. Patterson discusses the apparent contradictions between the Schaubuhne's original ideals as a model of socialist theatre and its present situation as one of the most highly subsidizes stages in Western Europe. Many productions are illustrated by photographs and imaginative reconstructions of particular scenes.
Anyone with an academic, professional, amateur, or recreational
interest in the theater is likely to want to look up details of
particular plays sometimes--perhaps to check on the author, or on
when they were first performed, or perhaps to see how many
characters they have, and whether or not they would be suitable for
their theater company or drama group to perform.

Carefully focused essays on major aspects of one of the most significant German literary movements, the Storm and Stress. Sturm und Drang refers to a set of values and a style of writing that arose in Germany in the second half of the eighteenth century, a particularly intense kind of pre-Romanticism that has often been represented as marking the beginning of an independent modern German culture. The circle of writers around the young Goethe, including Herder, Lenz, Klinger, and later Schiller, felt frustrated by the Enlightenment world of reason, balance, and control, and turned instead to nature as the source of authentic experience. Inspired by Rousseau and Herder, by Shakespeare, and by folk culture, they rebelled against propriety and experimented with new literary forms, their creative energy bursting through conventions that seemed staid and artificial. The Sturm und Drang has often been cited by those attempting to legitimate nationalism and irrationalism, but scholars have more recently emphasized the diversity of the movement and the links between it and the Enlightenment. This volume of essays by leading scholars from the UK, the US, and Germany illuminates the guiding ideas of the movement, discussing its most important authors, texts, and ideas, and taking account of the variety and complexity of the movement, placing it more securely within late-eighteenth-century European history. The main focus is on literature, and in particular on the drama, which was of special importance to the Sturm und Drang. However, the essays also outline the social conditions that gave rise to the movement, and consideration is given to different currents of ideas that underlie the movement, including areas of thought and bodies of work that traditional approaches have tended to marginalize. Contributors: Bruce Duncan, Howard Gaskill, Wulf Koepke, Susanne Kord, Frank Lamport, Alan Leidner, Matthias Luserke, Michael Patterson, Gerhard Sauder, Margaret Stoljar, Daniel Wilson, Karin Wurst. David Hill is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of German Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK.

This is a beautifully illustrated, fun story for children, at one level. At a deeper level, this is a metaphorical story about recovering from trauma. Some children, and even adults, cannot deal with trauma directly. Metaphor may be the only way to reach those who are more severely traumatized. Dr. Milton Erickson was gifted at using metaphor, to address trauma. This book was inspired by Ericksonian methods. The author's parents ran a foster home for children subjected to abuse. He has seen a number of traumatized children, in his life, and put this book together as a way to help them.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Stone was very worried. Although he had just returned from a well-deserved holiday, after helping to solve one of the country's highest profile murder cases, he suspected that his recent feeling of both personal and professional contentment would soon be shattered. He was convinced that there was an informant amongst his colleagues, who had been systematically passing information to one of London's most notorious criminal gangs. The problem was that he had no hard evidence to back up his suspicions. Now that he had returned he was eager to find out whether or not his concerns were shared by his immediate boss - but the answer was not what he expected. It would set him on a course of action that would eventually lead to him being personally accused of attempted rape and then murder and require him to seek the assistance of a most unlikely source. And then there was his relationship with Mary. Would it survive everything that was about to be thrown at him? Whilst all of this was happening, Stone and Acting Detective Sergeant Milner were trying to solve a series of metal thefts that were plaguing their community.
