Michael Schenk evaluates new technologies and methods, such as cryogenic read-out electronics and a UV laser system, developed to optimise the performance of large liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPC). Amongst others, the author studies the uniformity of the electric field produced by a Greinacher high-voltage generator operating at cryogenic temperatures, measures the linear energy transfer (LET) of muons and the longitudinal diffusion coefficient of electrons in liquid argon. The results are obtained by analysing events induced by cosmic-ray muons and UV laser beams. The studies are carried out with ARGONTUBE, a prototype LArTPC in operation at the University of Bern, Switzerland, designed to investigate the feasibility of drift distances of up to five metres for electrons in liquid argon.

Dieser praxisorientierte Handlungsleitfaden spricht insbesondere kleine und mittelstandische Unternehmen an. "FlexPro - Flexible Produktionskapazitat innovativ managen" war ein Forschungsprojekt in Unternehmen, dessen Ergebnisse als Grundlage dieses Leitfadens anschaulich erlautert werden."

Fernsehen in Deutschland befindet sich im Umbruch. Nicht nur Programmangebote, auch Darstellungs- sowie Finanzierungsformen verandern sich durch die Digitalisierung. Digitales Pay-TV hat sich jedoch bislang in Deutschland bei der Masse der Fernsehzuschauer nicht durchsetzen koennen. Diese Studie liefert eine Bestandsaufnahme der aktuellen Gegebenheiten des digitalen Fernsehmarktes und ermittelt die Grunde fur bestehende Akzeptanzbarrieren. Hierzu wurde bundesweit eine Befragung unter Fernsehzuschauern durchgefuhrt, die die Nutzungsstrukturen und Praferenzen von digitalen Pay-TV Usern bzw. Nicht-Nutzern untersucht. Moegliche Adoptionsentscheidungen wurden u.a. mit Hilfe einer Conjoint-Analyse uberpruft.

Die Film-, Fernseh-und Video-Branche in unserem Land boomt -das belegen die Zahlen, Daten und Fakten der vorliegenden Untersuchung, die infas, das Institut fur angewandte Sozialwissenschaft in Bad Godesberg, im Auftrag der nordrhein-westfalischen Landesregierung zusammengetragen hat. Fakten, die zur Nachricht machen, was wir schon seit langem geahnt haben: Nordrhein- Westfalen ist ein Medienland. Wie optimistisch die audio-visuelle Branche ihre Zukunft in Nordrhein- Westfalen sieht, macht die infas-Erhebung deutlich: Jeder zweite der insgesamt 400 Betriebe will expandieren; geplant sind Ausbau der Raumlichkeiten, Investitionen in die technische Ausstattung und -nicht zuletzt -Einstellung neuer Mitarbeiter. Voellig neue Akzente im Bereich einer innovativen Medienausbildung setzt die Kunsthochschule fur Medien, die wir im Wintersemester 1990/91 in der Medienstadt Koeln eroeffnet haben. Als jungster, grenzuberschreitender Darsteller in der medienbezogenen Wissenschaftslandschaft NRW hat 1992 das Europaische Medieninstitut in Dusseldorf Einzug gehalten -ein neues Zentrum fur die Kommunikation und Information uber die Medien in Europa. Die Studie spiegelt Dichte, Vielfalt und Qualitat der Ausbildung in unserem Land. Sie zeigt aber auch Lucken, die wir in Zukunft schliessen wollen.

French director Pascale Ferran brings D.H. Lawrence's second and lesser-known version of LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER to the screen. Approaching three hours in length, the film explores its protagonist's emotional transformation.

Set in England in the 1920s, the film begins with our heroine, played by Marina Hands, saying goodbye to her husband, Clifford, who is heading off to war. Left behind on their grand country estate, Constance gets the first taste of the loneliness and isolation she will later become accustomed to when he returns home paralysed. Suddenly reduced to the role of nurse, the young woman cares for her invalid husband and listlessly putters about the large property, desperately dreaming of escape.

She finds this outlet in Parkin (Jean-Louis Coulloc'h), the deceptively brutish gamekeeper down the hill. Sceptical of Constance at first, Parkin begrudgingly produces an extra set of keys to his shed when asked, opening the door to an affair that will awaken something deeply repressed in both parties. Clifford inadvertently encourages his wife by dismissing her boredom and unhappiness as unimportant.

When the unspoken tension between Parkin and Constance eventually explodes into a fiery sexual encounter, the two embark on a journey of sexual awakening and personal discovery. LADY CHATTERLEY is beautifully filmed, providing an extremely detailed account of the heroine's visual surroundings. Scenery functions symbolically to show how Constance blooms in the aura of Parkin's love.

But as passionate and subversive as their affair is, the reality of their social positions is always present, with visual clues creating a sense of constant threat to the relationship. When Constance goes off on a carefree, extravagant holiday with her fashionable sister and others from her own class, homemade-style footage of her trip contrasts with the controlled way in which her home life is captured, and demonstrates just how far she is from that world. The film's ending is rather open-ended, suggesting several possible outcomes by calling into question how much the early-20th-century social structure will matter in the end.
