In this book, Li Min proposes a new paradigm for the foundation and
emergence of the classical tradition in early China, from the late
Neolithic through the Zhou period. Using a wide range of historical
and archaeological data, he explains the development of ritual
authority and particular concepts of kingship over time in relation
to social memory. His volume weaves together the major benchmarks
in the emergence of the classical tradition, particularly how
legacies of prehistoric interregional interactions, state
formation, urban florescence and collapse during the late third and
the second millenniums BCE laid the critical foundation for the
Sandai notion of history among Zhou elite. Moreover, the
literary-historical accounts of the legendary Xia Dynasty in early
China reveal a cultural construction involving social memories of
the past and subsequent political elaborations in various phases of
history. This volume enables a new understanding on the long-term
processes that enabled a classical civilization in China to take
shape.

This book draws a colorful and widespread picture of global affine
hypersurface theory up to the most recent state. Moreover, the
recent development revealed that affine differential geometry - as
differential geometry in general - has an exciting intersection
area with other fields of interest, like partial differential
equations, global analysis, convex geometry and Riemann surfaces.
The second edition of this monograph leads the reader from
introductory concepts to recent research. Since the publication of
the first edition in 1993 there appeared important new
contributions, like the solutions of two different affine Bernstein
conjectures, due to Chern and Calabi, respectively. Moreover, a
large subclass of hyperbolic affine spheres were classified in
recent years, namely the locally strongly convex Blaschke
hypersurfaces that have parallel cubic form with respect to the
Levi-Civita connection of the Blaschke metric. The authors of this
book present such results and new methods of proof.
Min Li and a panel of hands-on experimentalists detail
state-of-the-art molecular techniques for studying NMDA
ligand-gated ion channels and developing assays for nontherapeutic
lead selection. The topics range from cDNA cloning to in vitro and
in vivo investigation of the channel complex in the mammalian
brain. Additional topics include the biochemical analysis of the
channel protein and the construction of various heterologous
systems for both basic research and high throughput screens (HTS)
for pharmaceutical chemicals. Although the focus is on NMDA
receptors, the methods are applicable to other ligand-gated ion
channels and with some modification may be extended to related
membrane signaling receptors. NMDA Receptor Protocols offers
today's scientists powerful methods for basic research on NMDA
receptor structure and function, as well as enormous opportunities
for clinical investigation toward the development of novel
bioactive compounds.
'It was August 1, a time when New York children are generally
wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts. My first patient was 18
months old and dressed more appropriately for late fall. When we
took off his clothes I saw why. He was covered head-to-toe with
oozing, staph-infected lesions, which he promptly began to scratch.
That explained the overdressing - it was the only deterrent to
scratching ... I had expected quick resolution using oral
medication-teas - based on my experience in China. I wasn't
prepared for this level of severity.'Dr Xiu-Min LiThus began Dr
Li's journey into the treatment of eczema in the United States,
which afflicts some 15-20% of children and 10% of adults. This book
represents years of collaboration with patients, parents,
pediatricians, allergists and dermatologists to treat disorders
that resist standard intervention, and in some cases are caused by
conventional treatment in the form of topical corticosteroids.
Chronic use of steroids by patients desperate for relief from
itching, oozing and scaling, and subsequent withdrawal can result
in severe physical and psychological symptoms.'It wasn't just the
extent of the disease. It was also the toll it took on family
quality of life. Kids were crying. Mothers were crying. They were
all sleeping badly. Most of these families also had bad food
allergies, but food allergy is a silent disease. People worry about
it, but with eczema they suffer every day.'Dr LiThis is a book of
scholarship. Dr Li, explores the literature of traditional Chinese
medicine, which has a long history of describing and treating skin
disorders, to find therapies that might benefit current patients.
It is a book of science as Dr Li and her team use state-of-the-art
technology to explore the mechanisms of disease, the therapeutic
effects of the herbs, and ways to make them more effective. But it
is also a book of compassion as patients and their families recount
their experience of illness and the road back, after working with
Dr Li's private practice.Dr Li has dual professorships in
Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology, and Otolaryngology at New
York Medical College. Dr Li and her team have long devoted to
themselves to developing novel therapies for food allergy, asthma,
eczema, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, and Crohn's disease, among other
inflammatory conditions.

This book describes the mineralization process of barite-fluorite
deposits in southeastern Sichuan, Yangtze Block, China. Mainly
through systematic field geological surveys and detailed indoor
research work, the typical barite-fluorite deposits in this area
were analyzed using a variety of analysis methods such as single
fluid inclusion LA-ICP-MS composition analysis, trace rare earth
element analysis, H-O-S-Sr isotope analysis, F element content
analysis, and Sm-Nd geochronological analysis. By in-depth analysis
of the ore-forming environment, mineralization process and
geological characteristics of barite-fluorite deposits, the
following were determined: (1) the source of ore-forming fluids of
barite-fluorite deposits and (2) the migration, concentration,
enrichment, and evolution of ore-forming sources, exploring the
formation mechanism of barite-fluorite deposits. Summarizing the
mineralization regularity of the deposit in this area of China
provides a new insight and basis for the study of similar types of
deposits in the world.

The vast majority of drugs are organic molecular entities. A clear
understanding of the organic chemistry of drug degradation is
essential to maintaining the stability, efficacy, and safety of a
drug product throughout its shelf-life. During analytical method
development, stability testing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing
troubleshooting activities, one of the frequently occurring and
usually challenging events would be the identification of drug
degradants and understanding of drug degradation mechanisms and
pathways. This book is written by a veteran of the pharmaceutical
industry who has first-hand experience in drug design and
development, drug degradation mechanism studies, analytical
development, and manufacturing process troubleshooting and
improvement. The author discusses various degradation pathways with
an emphasis on the mechanisms of the underlying organic chemistry,
which should aid greatly in the efforts of degradant
identification, formulation development, analytical development,
and manufacturing process improvement. Organic reactions that are
significant in drug degradation will first be reviewed and then
illustrated by examples of drug degradation reported in the
literature. The author brings the book to a close with a final
chapter dedicated to the strategy for rapid elucidation of drug
degradants with regard to the current regulatory requirements and
guidelines. One chapter that should be given special attention is
Chapter 3, Oxidative Degradation. Oxidative degradation is one of
the most common degradation pathways but perhaps the most complex
one. This chapter employs more than sixty drug degradation case
studies with in-depth discussion in regard to their unique
degradation pathways. With the increasing regulatory requirements
on the quality and safety of pharmaceutical products, in particular
with regard to drug impurities and degradants, the book will be an
invaluable resource for pharmaceutical and analytical scientists
who engage in formulation development, analytical development,
stability studies, degradant identification, and support of
manufacturing process improvement. In addition, it will also be
helpful to scientists engaged in drug discovery and development as
well as in drug metabolism studies.
This book represents a new and hopeful paradigm for treatment of
diseases that are spreading globally as countries adopt Western
lifestyles and standards of living. It describes the phenomenal
science and clinical efficacy of the work of Dr Xiu-Min Li across a
broad array of immune and inflammatory diseases. These include food
allergies, asthma, eczema, 'new' diseases such as mast cell
disorders, obesity, and mental health problems that are part of a
worldwide 'epidemic of progress'.The most allergic people are
caught in a cycle of medication, steroid dependency, emergency
hospitalization, and curtailing their activities and diets to avoid
triggers. Children are 'losing their childhoods.' They are fighting
a battle against diet, climate change, and environmental
degradation. Dr Li offers them hope by healing the entire immune
system, not just address symptoms. In her practice Dr Li treats
complex combinations of allergic diseases for all ages, from
infancy through adulthood, bringing relief to people who have
suffered terribly from oozing, bleeding skin, desperate breathing
disorders, and life-threatening food allergies. She uses her vast
knowledge of biochemistry to improve on the traditional decoctions
to create refined versions suitable for modern tastes and
lifestyles. In contrast with Western pharmaceuticals, which are the
study of 'one molecule's effects on one other molecule' Dr Li's
work shows the effects of multiple molecules on multiple other
molecules. Increasing numbers of scientists are beginning to see
the possibilities for their own research, with the prospects for
more collaborations with prestigious institutions around the world.
