Andrew Garfield reprises his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in this superhero sequel based on the Marvel Comics characters. By day Peter Parker enjoys an ordinary life, spending time with his girlfriend Gwen (Emma Stone), but by night he flies high amidst New York skyscrapers as he battles evil. The emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), a figure with startling power and malevolent intentions, poses Spider-Man his greatest challenge to date, while he also has The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) to keep under control. The unexpected return of his old friend Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) is more welcome. Together, the pair come to realise that shadowy corporation Oscorp seems to be responsible for much of the evil they encounter. Can they find a way to put an end to Oscorp's nefarious activities?
J.J. Abrams directs this seventh instalment of the epic sci-fi film series in which Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill reprise their roles from the original trilogy. Set 30 years after 'Return of the Jedi' (1983), the film follows Han Solo (Ford), Princess Leia (Fisher) and new characters scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley), former stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) and X-wing pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) as they face powerful forces from the dark side in the form of First Order commander Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his master Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis). The film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Original Score (John Williams), Best Visual Effects and Best Editing.
Double-bill of big-budget spin-offs of the classic 1960s sci-fi adventure series created by Gene Roddenberry. In 'Star Trek' (2009), the film chronicles the early years in the life of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members, including Kirk's enrolment at Starfleet Academy, his first meeting with Spock (Zachary Quinto) and their battles with time-travelling Romulans from the future. Eric Bana, Winona Ryder and Simon Pegg co-star, along with Leonard Nimoy, who reprises his role as the older Spock. In 'Star Trek Into Darkness' (2013), Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise are called back to Earth after a devastating force from within their organisation leaves the planet in chaos and Starfleet in pieces. Determined to settle the score, Kirk embarks on a manhunt with the rest of his crew including Spock, Scotty (Pegg) and Chekov (Anton Yelchin) to find the party responsible before their whole world is laid to waste.

Right after "Is it a boy or a girl?" and "What's his/her name?," the next question people invariably ask new parents is "Are you getting any sleep?" Unfortunately, the answer is usually "Not much." In fact, studies show that approximately 25% of young children experience some type of sleep problem and, as any bleary-eyed parent will attest, it is one of the most difficult challenges of parenting. Drawing on her ten years of experience in the assessment and treatment of common sleep problems in children, Dr. Jodi A. Mindell now provides tips and techniques, the answers to commonly asked questions, and case studies and quotes from parents who have successfully solved their children's sleep problems. Unlike other books on the subject, Dr. Mindell also offers practical tips on bedtime, rather than middle-of-the-night-sleep training, and shows how all members of the family can cope with the stresses associated with teaching a child to sleep.
Showcasing marbled paper, paste paper, fold-and-dye papers, and more, this book reveals a little-known arts phenomenon from its grass roots in the 1960s to artistic heights in the following decades Pattern and Flow chronicles the flourishing of American decorated paper arts beginning in the 1960s and extending to the 2000s, with an ongoing legacy today. As knowledge and skills were shared across a grass-roots community in the 1960s, decorated paper became increasingly popular, with centers for the study of the book and paper arts emerging across the United States, and artists developing new, innovative styles of paper. The book begins with an introductory essay outlining the history of decorated paper arts in America up to the 1960s, followed by a chronological narrative, which surveys the development of the field and introduces the artists working from the 1960s to the 2000s, and an illustrated reference section with essential biographical and professional information for each artist. Designed to be an immersive experience, Pattern and Flow conveys the vivid visual world of American decorated paper, celebrating the variety and variations that are key features of the art. Stunning illustrations show designs with intricate, tessellated patterns and others that flow with forms and waves that seem liquid; some explore subtle, muted tones, while others are explosive in their use of brilliant colors. Darwin's nineteenth-century writings laid the foundations for modern studies of evolution, and theoretical developments in the mid-twentieth century fostered the Modern Synthesis. Since that time, a great deal of new biological knowledge has been generated, including details of the genetic code, lateral gene transfer, and developmental constraints. Our improved understanding of these and many other phenomena have been working their way into evolutionary theory, changing it and improving its correspondence with evolution in nature. And while the study of evolution is thriving both as a basic science to understand the world and in its applications in agriculture, medicine, and public health, the broad scope of evolution--operating across genes, whole organisms, clades, and ecosystems--presents a significant challenge for researchers seeking to integrate abundant new data and content into a general theory of evolution. This book gives us that framework and synthesis for the twenty-first century. The Theory of Evolution presents a series of chapters by experts seeking this integration by addressing the current state of affairs across numerous fields within evolutionary biology, ranging from biogeography to multilevel selection, speciation, and macroevolutionary theory. By presenting current syntheses of evolution's theoretical foundations and their growth in light of new datasets and analyses, this collection will enhance future research and understanding.
What if you could dream 24 hours a day, even while awake? According to innovative psychotherapist Arnold Mindell, Ph.D., we already do. The seeds of dreaming arise in every moment of the day, in body symptoms, problems, relationships, subtile feelings, interactions, random thoughts, and fantasies. We're getting countless little cues from the unconscious every minute. All are signs from the world of dreaming. And, according to Mindell, we can be in this state of lucid dreaming all day long. In Dreaming While Awake, Mindell shows how to become aware of these "flirts" from the dreamworld and how to interpret their message. The goal, he says, is to be wide awake and lucid 24 hours a day in the midst of this unending dreamfield of information. Practicing 24-hour lucid dreaming:
Dreaming is the mystical source of reality, says Mindell. "My goal is to make the Dreaming roots of reality so accessible, so visceral, that your conscious mind will give you back your right to dream."
Herpes Simplex Virus is the fifth monograph to be published in the Bloomsbury Series of Clinical Science. It provides an authoritative review of the key issues related to this common clinical problem. The characteristics of the virus, its epidemiology and the diag nosis and management of the various forms of infection are all considered. Adrian Mindel is an international authority on this subject; he joined the Academic Department of Genito-urinary Medicine at the Middlesex Hospital in 1980 and has been actively involved in HSV research since that time. His major research interests include the epidemiology and treatment of genital herpes, the epidemi ology of neo-natal herpes and the many and varied features of HSV infections in immuno-compromised patients. The continuing aim of the Bloomsbury Series is to identify the growing areas of clinical research and relate these to current and future medical practice. In Herpes Simplex Virus such aspirations have been successfully achieved. London, May 1989 Jack Tinker Preface There has been considerable interest in herpes simplex viruses (HSV) over recent years. Amongst the many reasons for this are the introduction of safe and efficacious therapy, the recognition that HSV may cause life-threatening infections in neonates and immunocompromised patients, the observation that genital herpes is one of the commonest viral sexually transmitted diseases and the possible association of HSV with cervical cancer."
Love at first sight. During the Holocaust. Bonds as strong as steel, forged in the flames of hate. These are extraordinary stories of love affairs during the most dangerous, degrading, and deadly conditions of genocidal persecution. The extreme lengths to which two people will go to express their love, and the superhuman strength that is derived from such love, is the stuff of miracles and endless inspiration. This little-known aspect of the Holocaust, seen through the eyes of those in love, is a unique contribution to our understanding of the best and the worst qualities of human nature. This book must be read by anyone who wants to know more about life and love enduring the most horrendous conditions one could imagine.
The USS "Monitor" famously battled the CSS "Virginia" (the armored and refitted USS Merrimack) at Hampton Roads in March 1862. This updated edition of David A. Mindell's classic account of the ironclad warships and the human dimension of modern warfare commemorates the 150th anniversary of this historic encounter. Mindell explores how mariners--fighting "blindly," below the waterline--lived in and coped with the metal monster they called the "iron coffin." He investigates how the ironclad technology, new to war in the nineteenth century, changed not only the tools but also the experience of combat and anticipated today's world of mechanized, pushbutton warfare. The writings of William Frederick Keeler, the ship's paymaster, inform much of this book, as do the experiences of everyman sailor George Geer, who held Keeler in some contempt. Mindell uses their compelling stories, and those of other shipmates, to recreate the thrills and dangers of living and fighting aboard this superweapon. Recently, pieces of the "Monitor" wreck have been raised from their watery grave, and with them, information about the ship continues to be discovered. A new epilogue describes the recovery of the "Monitor" turret and its display at the USS "Monitor" Museum in Newport News, Virginia. This sensitive and enthralling history of the USS "Monitor" ensures that this fateful ship, and the men who served on it, will be remembered for generations to come.

There are places on earth where a life span of 100-plus years is common. These people are happy, healthy, energetic and free from the diseases that plague most populations. What is their secret? And how can you get it? Earl Mindell, the world's leading nutritionist, has unleashed his astounding research on the world's most powerful anti-aging food. It's called the goji berry and it is quite possibly the most powerful and important natural health discovery ever made.
In this updated second edition, the renowned author of The Vitamin Bible and his coauthor, Elizabeth Renaghan, focus on how a dog's body functions nutritionally. The authors discuss easy, flexible, and affordable ways to keep one's dog healthy, and elaborate on the different nutritional requirements of different breeds. They explain why each nutrient discussed is needed, and recommend size-appropriate amounts of them for dogs ranging from small to giant.

Another health revolution has arrived, says Dr. Michael Bonner in his well-researched new book The Oral Health Bible, and there is no longer any separation between mouth medicine and body medicine. The mouth is completely connected to the body, he says, and is a doorway to achieving peak health and wellness in all the body's systems. This informative book contains an action plan for taking charge of our oral health and it educates us and our physicians and dentists by detailing how many debilitating health problems--conditions such as arteriosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, rheumatoid arthritis, and premature and low-birth-weight babies--are intimately linked to oral health and hygiene. Dr. Bonner emphasizes the importance of finding and treating periodontal (gum) disease because, untreated, it can lead to heart attacks and strokes. He sees more gum disease now than he did twenty-five years ago, he says, largely because of the increasing availability of harmful oral hygiene products on the market. Mouthwashes, for example, are generally considered trustworthy, but in reality, they are the cause of 36,000 cases of oral cancer a year. Moreover, 500 people are killed annually from alcohol ingestion related to mouthwashes. Dr. Bonner discusses safe, effective oral health techniques and products in order to reverse gum disease with its far-reaching negative consequences. He also outlines how nutritional supplements can help deliver potentially enormous benefits to oral, as well as overall, health. In 1910, the Mayo (clinic) brothers said, "A person with a healthy mouth will live ten years longer."
To the surprise of many people, several pounds of good bacteria populate our digestive tract, help us maintain normal digestion, and protect us against stomach flus, candida overgrowth, and many other types of infection. In this concise book, internationally recognised nutrition expert Dr. Earl Mindell explains the many health benefits of probiotics and how to use them to enhance health. |
