Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: International Organisations, grade: 70, University of Cape Town (Department of Political Science), course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: A large portion of the literature that deals with the evolution of the R2P focuses on the principle's progression from the ICISS report to the HLP report, the Secretary-General's report and ultimately the 2005 World Summit Outcome Document. This thesis provides a discussion of the main events and arguments that have influenced the debate around the R2P and the principle's evolution, namely, the war on terror and the 2003 war in Iraq, the crisis in Darfur, and lastly, U.N. Security Council buy-in regarding the ICISS articulated criteria to guide the use of military force in humanitarian intervention. The thesis is divided into three sections, the first providing a conceptual background to humanitarian intervention. The second part shifts the discussion to the ICISS and the R2P, and the final section focuses on the main factors that have influenced the principle's evolution. A central theme underlying the reason for the undertaking of this thesis is the claim that the international system is experiencing a change in the writers/authors of the rules of the system. The argument is built by using the abovementioned main factors influencing the R2P's evolution as evidence - the central assertion being that the war in Iraq has weakened the moral standing of the U.S. and the U.K., and has negatively impacted on the credibility of these states as norm carriers. This has not only diminished their ability to build consensus on and commitment to the R2P, but has also engendered widespread hostility and suspicion towards the principle. The result is an international endorsement of the R2P that is substantially different from its initial emergence in the ICISS report, which by many accounts lacks much of the substance which would

Research Paper from the year 2009 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: 83%, University of Cape Town, language: English, abstract: Drawing on information gathered by means of one-on-one interviews, and supplemented and supported by a vast depth of literature in the respective field, this study aims to identify and discuss the effects of non-standard work on the modus operandi of trade unions in South Africa. The study makes use of a relative small sample of seven experts in the field of industrial relations/industrial sociology, and research interviews were conducted based on an interview schedule, but not limited to it. Although the South African trade union movement operates in much the same if not entirely same manner as it did pre-1994, a number of factors have been identified and discussed which have impacted on and affected the labour movement at both organisational and grassroots level.

Research Paper from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 76%, University of Cape Town, course: International Relations Honours, language: English, abstract: The end of the Cold War, some have argued,1 has dealt the three worlds classification scheme a fatal blow and the break-up of the former Soviet Union and the associated disintegration of the Second World has to a large extent diminished the rationale which underlay the concept of the Third World.2 Furthermore, from its heyday in the 1970s, Third Worldism has been on a path of terminal decline due to a number of factors, such as disproportionate economic development among Third Worldist states,3 political differences and the failure to establish a "common programme for international economic and political reform."4 Within the literature relating to Third Worldism, the concept of the Third World itself, and the three worlds scheme, there is a lively debate with some arguing that the concept has become an anachronism,5 others maintaining that the concept maintains significance in the contemporary era. Furthermore, while there is general consensus within the literature that Third Worldism has experienced a declining trend, some argue that there is both the need and space for a revival of Third Worldism.6 == 1 Arif Dirlik, "Spectres of the Third World" Global Modernity and the End of the Three Worlds," Third World Quarterly 25 (2004): 131; Vicky Randall, "Using and Abusing the Concept of the Third World: Geopolitics and the Comparative Political Study of Development and Underdevelopment," Third World Quarterly 25 (2004): 43; Marc Williams, "Re-Articulating the Third World Coalition: The Role of the Environmental Agenda," Third World Quarterly 14 (1993): 7; Mark T.
