Sketches of poetic and absolute power that are as extraordinary as
their creators. This is t he first ‐ ever publication of the
entirety of EVA & ADELE’s floral sketchbook. The drawings of
flowers, which are uncompromising and executed in a small number of
unfalteringly precise graphite lines, surprise the viewer with the
radical aesthetics of their abstraction. Accompanied by a Gertrude
Stein text, the unique sketches of flowers by EVA & ADELE are
reproduced in this book ‐ lover’s treasure trove in close
adherence to the original artists’ book. Based on photographs of
the flowers in the artists’ studi o, they in turn are the basis
of the highest level of the monumental palimpsest compositions of
the group of works entitled ADSILA. The lifelong performance of the
always smiling, internationally successful artist ‐ duo is one of
the most radical pieces of c ontemporary art. Their work has
already been exhibited in numerous solo shows from New York to
Helsinki, and it has been acquired by the most important
collections in the world, including the Tate Gallery in London and
the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville d e Paris
The paintings and drawings of Michele Melillo (*1977) enchant the
viewer with their lightness and harmonious colours. Accompanied by
an explanatory essay by Veit Ziegelmaier, this comprehensive artist
monograph reproduces for the first time works from all work cycles
by the young German painter and graphic artist.Michele Melillo
starts with historicalreferences when developing his works,
combining in masterly style motifs from the Baroque and Rococo eras
with a modern vocabulary of forms, folkloric ornaments and
classical architecture. Fauvist orgies of colour and sprawling
lines characterise the recurring subjects of his pictures: the
barque as a symbol of the Egyptian sun god Ra, fabulous creatures
and unusual animal pictures or portraits of people long believed to
be dead. After studying painting with Prof. Axel Kasseboehmer at
the Academy of Fine Arts, today Melillo lives and works in Munich.
As the monograph impressively proves, hisworks instantly fascinate
the viewer and surprise repeatedly with their profound wit.
EVA & ADELE’s work finds its raison d’être in their
permanent, lifelong performance which takes place worldwide
throughout the public space. The work group CUM (lat. WITH) is the
essence of the interactive process. It was acknowledged as early as
1997 in the Sprengel Museum with the solo exhibition CUM, and is
continued to this day in a variety of media. EVA & ADELE
requested one of two Polaroids taken by the public –
co-performers – including a signature. Based on this they created
a group of important drawings and paintings which they developed in
the subsequent artistic process and have continued until today. The
publication forms the work complex CUM in its entirety; the volume
is completed by valuable text contributions by Robert Fleck, Lisa
Schmidt-Herzog and Marcus Steinweg.
Philip Groezinger's art derives from his investigations of
future-oriented visions. With his individualistic painterly
signature he invites the viewer to join him on a surreal journey
through the pictorial traditions of the Pop culture of recent
decades. This volume is a retrospective which provides a
comprehensive overview of his outstanding oeuvre. If there were
such a thing, Groezinger's works could be classified as Virtual
Surrealism. Figures in space suits, black manikins and other
figures encounter one another in a fictional cosmos. Against a
background of abstract worlds they tell stories which follow their
own physical laws. In painterly manner, Groezinger combines lurid
contrasts with delicate, pastel-like shades. His paint application
is based on that of miniature painting and gives the cartoon-like
creatures human features as it draws the viewer into the artist's
fantasy world.
