The second edition of this text shows how play and literacy can
combine to help young children develop a more complete
understanding of writing, as well as literacy more generally. In
addition to discussing the implications of the new Guidance for the
Foundation Stage, the authors use more recent research to extend
the discussion of how and why play and literacy work together so
powerfully, and provide further advice on planning and developing
effective experiences. Early years practitioners should find that
this book helps them to focus on the development of literacy
knowledge and skills.
Social work is a profession that is increasingly involved with
issues which have a global dimension. This Handbook tackles the
global/local aspect of social work in its various forms and
interrogates the key concerns that societies are facing through an
international lens. The contributors show that, with an
appreciation of commonalities and differences, local practices and
appropriate forms of international activity can be better
developed. Areas covered include: - Analysis of 'International
social work' - Globalisation and indigenisation - Social justice
and human rights - Poverty and livelihoods - Ecological issues -
Migration - Education, theory, research and practice - Social work
in different settings - Religion and spirituality - Responses to
disasters and conflicts - Life course perspectives - Regional
perspectives - Future directions With a truly international range
of contributions, the Handbook incorporates perspectives from Asia,
Africa, Europe, Australasia, the Middle East and the Americas. It
will be an invaluable resource for undergraduates, postgraduates,
researchers and academics working in the fields of social work,
social welfare, human services, and community development
worldwide, as well as service providers and policy makers in the
international arena.

A critical introduction to the Troubled Families Programme (TFP),
this book explores the roots, significance and effectiveness of
troubled family approaches in social work. An important strand of
government social policy, the TFP gives rise to a number of ethical
and political questions about assertive outreach, choice, use of
power and eliding the structural inequalities which, it is often
argued, largely account for the difficulties troubled families
face. Social Work with Troubled Families: A Critical Introduction
debates these issues, offers an examination of the systemic
framework which underpins it and looks at the initiative in a
broader context. This interdisciplinary study will be an important
resource for social workers, social work students, practice
educators and academics for its examination of practice methods. As
an exploration of social policy it will appeal to social scientists
and to policy makers along with those who seek to influence them.
