Hawaiian resort workers, like those in nearly all resorts, consist of four groups. New immigrants hold difficult and dirty low-status jobs for little pay. Locals provide an authentic Polynesian flavor for guests, a ready pool of youthful high-turnover employees, and a population trapped in a place that offers few occupational alternatives. Managers tend to be middle-class, college-educated young and middle-aged men from the mainland whose lifestyles are occupationally transient. The Adlers explore some of the patterns that develop in this social space, noting both the differences in the gendered cultures of boys and girls and their overlap into afterschool activities, role behavior, romantic inclinations, and social stratification. Peer culture shows the informal social mechanisms through which children create their social order, determine their place and identity, and develop positive and negative feelings about themselves. Patricia A. Adler is a professor of sociology at the University of Colorado. Peter Adler is a professor of sociology at the University of Denver. The Adlers have worked and written together for more than twenty-five years, producing ten books and more than fifty articles.

Written by Ouyang Xiu (1007-1072), an intellectual giant of the Song dynasty, "Historical Records of the Five Dynasties" offers a compelling interpretation of the Five Dynasties period (907-979). In overhauling the existing official history, Ouyang Xiu made several notable decisions. He recast the entire narrative in the popular "ancient" style to make for a rare fluency. He adopted rigorous moral categories to evaluate historical figures, reflecting the new regimen of his day. He also annotated portions of the text to establish a methodology for future writers. The "Historical Records" thereby became the official version-the last of China's dynastic histories to be written by an individual in a private capacity. In addition to its provocative commentary and lucid presentation, "Historical Records" is an eloquent statement on the art and craft of historical writing in the eleventh century.
