Modern societies currently lack positive alternative visions of the
future. Many writers have claimed that the only option is a return
to free-market capitalism, in which success and survival depend on
being as competitive as possible whether as a nation, firm or
individual. Paul Hirst argues that there are viable alternative
futures and widely applicable models that can be used to structure
change. Hirst's distinctive approach to political theory reasons
from real political problems rather than confining itself to
abstract concepts. Presenting an innovative political position,
this collection of essays represents an attempt to re-state a
practical third way between the discredited ideals of state
socialism and laissez-faire capitalism.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 14th
International Conference on Cryptology in India, INDOCRYPT 2013,
held in Mumbai, India, in December 2013. The 15 revised full papers
presented together with 6 short papers the abstracts of 3 invited
talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 76 submissions. The
papers are organized in topical sections on provable security; hash
functions and signatures; side channel attacks; symmetric key
cryptanalysis; key exchange and secret sharing; efficient
implementation and hardware; and coding theory in cryptography.
Continued geographic expansion of dengue viruses and their mosquito
vectors has seen the magnitude and frequency of epidemic
dengue/dengue hemorrhagic fever (DF/DHF) increase dramatically.
Recent exciting research on dengue has resulted in major advances
in our understanding of all aspects of the biology of these
viruses, and this updated second edition brings together leading
research and clinical scientists to review dengue virus biology,
epidemiology, entomology, therapeutics, vaccinology and clinical
management.

The Proceedings of the 17th International Cosmic Ray Conference
held in Paris, July 15 to 25, 1981, appear in two sets. The Regular
Volumes, 1 to 8, contain contributed papers received at the
Secretariat by April 1st, 1981. They were issued at the opening of
the Conference. The Late Volumes, 9 to 14, contain contributed
papers received after that date, Invited and Rapporteur Talks, and
the General Index. The assiduous reader will notice several changes
with respect to the well-established traditions of the Conference.
1/ Following a recommendation of the Commission an Cosmic Rays of
IUPAP, and although an increase in the total number of papers
submitted was noticed as compared to the 16th ICRC (Kyoto, 1979),
the total number of pages has been significantly reduced, thanks to
introduction of three new rules for publication. (i) None of the
first "Preliminary" Abstracts was published. These abstracts had to
be confirmed, either by a new "Confirming Abstract" or by a Full
Paper. The Confirming Abstracts are included in the Proceedings.
(ii) The sum of the "fractional" contributions of each author
should not exceed 3 papers, and each author should not appear in
more than 10 papers. (iii) The maximum number of pages per paper
was reduced from 6 to 4. The Organizing Committee thanks all
authors who have, in their vast majority, very efficiently
cooperated by kindly complying with these new rules. The papers we
selected an the basis of the Preliminary Abstracts.
Set in Guatemala, these spare and beautiful tales are linked by
themes of magic, violence, and the fragility of existence. Paul
Bowle's translation perfectly captures Rey Rosa's stories of the
haunted lives of ordinary people in present-day Central
America.
Malaysia has the potential to be a key seaweed production player in
the region if proper management and possible interventions take
place. Chapter One analyses the capacity building programs in
Malaysia that aim to transform conventional seaweed cultivation
techniques to modern seaweed cultivation techniques by applying a
scientific approach. Chapter Two studies the marine macroalgae
thriving at intertidal rocky shores on the west coast of Portugal,
a transition zone where the combined influence of cold waters and
warmer waters may favour the development of unique macroalgal
communities. In Chapter Three, the authors discuss how problems of
environmental deterioration and energy demand could be alleviated
by the paradigm shift from fossil to biofuel from marine algae. The
chapter elaborates on the unconventional strategies developed for
the farming as well as conversion of Ulva rigida to biofuels and
biochemicals. Chapter Four discusses the incorporation of
macroalgae or macroalgal derived ingredients as a source of both
macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients for animal feed production. The
biological health benefits of the macroalgal ingredients beyond
basic nutrition for the development of functional feed in the
aquaculture, the ruminant and the swine sectors are also discussed
together with the industrial challenges of its application. To
conclude, Chapter Five provides a brief review of seaweed
co-culture and its environmental impact on coastal fisheries.
First, the current situation and problems facing the coastal
fisheries, and the plans to overcome these issues, are discussed.
Finally, the positive and negative effects of seaweed culture, role
of seaweed co-culture, and the overall environmental impact are
addressed.

More than once during his yearlong duty, thirty-two-year-old Dr.
James J. Paul wondered what had possessed him to leave the security
of a neurosurgery practice in the Midwest to experience the blood,
guts, and gore of brain surgery at a forward marine hospital during
the Vietnam War. In Blood on China Beach, Paul, a neurosurgeon from
the Mayo Clinic, shares the story of how he learned his craft in a
rudimentary hospital in Vietnam, twelve thousand miles from
home.
This memoir picks up where most Vietnam battlefield memoirs
leave off-when the choppers deliver the dead and gravely wounded to
the field hospitals and the dedicated doctors and medical staff
struggle under primitive and unsterile conditions to preserve life.
In this environment, Paul was charged with carrying out emergency
neurosurgery on those soldiers sustaining head injuries. He details
both the emotional and professional factors that played a role in
his service and provides a unique perspective to the Vietnam
War.
Insightful and historically significant, Blood on China Beach
shows Paul's reverence for life and his admiration for the bravery
of the marines he operated on, even as he questioned his own
ability to make a difference. This memoir shows Paul's evolution
from child to man and from neophyte to surgeon.
