'This extraordinary tale of rivalry and celluloid . . . has
fascinated cineastes for years.' Kathryn Hughes, Sunday Times
'Illuminating and thrilling.' The Spectator 'Absorbing, forensic
and jaw-dropping.' Total Film In 1888, Louis Le Prince shot the
world's first motion picture in Leeds, England. In 1890, weeks
before the planned public unveiling of his camera and projector, Le
Prince boarded a train in France - and disappeared without a trace.
His body was never found. In 1891, Thomas Edison - inventor of the
lightbulb and the phonograph - announced that he had developed a
motion-picture camera. Le Prince's family, convinced that Edison
had stolen Louis's work, proceeded to sue the most famous inventor
in the world. The Man Who Invented Motion Pictures excavates one of
the great unsolved mysteries of the Victorian age and offers a
revelatory rewriting of the birth of modern pictures.
This volume celebrates the 50th anniversary of the famous and
influential work of Jean Piaget and Alina Szeminska, "The Child's
Conception of Number." It is a tribute to those two authors as well
as to the entire Geneva school that pioneered the genetic study of
cognitive structures in children. Dealing with the process of the
child's construction of the notion of number -- a very important
subject for the child as well as for the teacher, the researcher,
and the practicing psychologist -- it summarizes the progress that
has been made and outlines new research directions in this area.
The book is a compilation of the work of the foremost international
researchers in this area and includes a wide spectrum of viewpoints
and schools of thought. It also introduces several new authors from
Europe, including students of Piaget, to the American academic
community.

March 29 to 31, 1999. This conference is the fourth in a series of
bi-annual conferences established in 1993.
TheEuroCOLTconferencesarefocusedontheanalysisoflearningalgorithms
and the theory of machine learning, and bring together researchers
from a wide variety of related elds. Some of the issues and topics
that are addressed include the sample and computational complexity
of learning speci c model classes, frameworks modeling the
interaction between the learner, teacher and the en- ronment (such
as learning with queries, learning control policies and inductive
inference), learningwithcomplexmodels(suchasdecisiontrees,
neuralnetworks, and support vector machines), learning with minimal
prior assumptions (such as mistake-bound models, universal
prediction, and agnostic learning), and the study of model
selection techniques. We hope that these conferences stimulate an
interdisciplinary scienti c interaction that will be fruitful in
all represented elds. Thirty- ve papers were submitted to the
program committee for conside- tion, and twenty-one of these were
accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in
these proceedings. In addition, Robert Schapire (AT & T Labs),
and Richard Sutton (AT & T Labs) were invited to give lectures
and contribute a written version to these proceedings. There were a
number of other joint events including a banquet and an excursion
to Munster ] . The IFIP WG 1.4 Scholarship was awarded to Andra s

By blending multiple strands of thought into one ideology,
Chinese Syncretists of the pre-imperial period created an essential
guide to contemporary ideas about self, society, and government.
Merging traditions such as Ruism, Mohism, Daoism, Legalism, and
Yin-Yang naturalism into their work, Syncretists created an
integrated intellectual approach that contrasts with other, more
specific philosophies. Presenting the first full English
translation of the earliest example of a Syncretist text, this
volume introduces Western scholars to both the brilliance of the
syncretic method and a critical work of Chinese leadership.
Written by Shi Jiao, China's first syncretic thinker, during the
Warring States Period of 481 to 221 BCE, "Shizi" is similar to
Machiavelli's "The Prince" in that it dispenses wisdom to would-be
rulers. It stresses the need for leaders to be detached and
objective. It further encourages self-cultivation and effective
government, recommending that rulers maintain self-discipline, hire
reliable people, delegate power transparently, and promote others
in an orderly fashion. The people, it is argued, will emulate their
leader's wisdom and virtue, and a just and peaceful state will
result. Paul Fischer provides an extensive introduction and a
chapter-by-chapter summary and analysis of the text -- outlining
the importance of syncretism in Chinese culture -- and explores the
text's particular features, authorship, transmission, loss, and
reconstruction over time. The "Shizi" set the stage for a long
history of syncretic endeavor in China, and its study provides
insight into the vital traditions of early Chinese philosophy. It
is also a template for interpreting other well-known works, such as
the Confucian "Analects," the Daoist "Laozi," the Mohist "Mozi,"
and the Legalist "Shang jun shu."
Against the Grain is the autobiography of the classical musical
instrument maker Paul Fischer. He trained under renowned instrument
maker Robert Goble in his workshops at Headington in Oxfordshire
before spending 6 years in the British Army, after which in 1969 he
began working with David Rubio making instruments for world-famous
musicians including Julian Bream. In addition to guitars, they made
harpsichords, spinets, lutes, citterns and instruments for the
Early Music instrument revival scene. Paul established his own
workshops in the late 1970s and continued to make beautiful
instruments for the next forty years. He has made an invaluable
contribution to the world of instrument makers promoting the use of
new woods as the rainforests of Brazil continue to deplete. His
autobiography celebrates his art and his supreme talent.

Eurasia's Emerging Megamarkets: Building Your Tomorrow in China,
India, and Russia by Paul Fischer is a groundbreaking book for
anyone doing business in today's global economy. Author Fischer
introduces the concept of Eurasia as a strategic entity for
long-term positioning and a viable complement to investments in
industrialized countries. The book describes a comprehensive, not
piecemeal (e.g., only China), approach to internationalization by
methodically showing readers how to leverage Eurasia's main
markets, not simply through exports, but through systematic
investment to acquire key accounts and to establish strategic
alliances. Written with business leaders, university faculty, and
policymakers in mind, and based on real project experience, the
book offers comparative information on 16 industries and proposes a
6-step approach to secure leadership. This primer is necessary
reading for anyone planning to expand into high-growth economies
that are less affected by the financial crisis.

Lernen benutzten Information herauszufiltern. UEbungen ermoeglichen
die UEberprufung des richtigen Verstandnisses beim Lesen des
Buches.
