Biz Jets: Technology and Market Structure in the Corporate Jet Aircraft Industry traces the development of business jet aircraft from the mid-1950s through early 1993. It begins with a discussion of the technological and market opportunities existing in the period prior to the introduction of the Lockheed JetStar and the North American Sabreliner. The subsequent appearances of other biz jets -- the Learjets, HS-125s, Jet Commanders, Falcons, Gulfstreams, Citations, Challengers, Mitsubishis and derivative aircraft are treated in considerable detail. Biz Jets also covers 'planes involved in many unsuccessful attempts to enter the industry from 1955 through 1993. The study shows that while the industry has been quite concentrated throughout its history, the positions of the leading firms have always been contestable. Indeed, leaders at one point in time have often been displaced by others who succeeded in marshalling technological and market opportunities to their advantage. Manufacturers have had to undertake continuous efforts to improve the price-performance characteristics of their aircraft to gain and hold their market shares. Rivalries in the effective use of the stream of new technologies have brought forth new aircraft with both better performance and lower operating costs. At the same time, however, participation in the market has been extremely risky. Only a few companies have been able to earn profits. Entries, exits and mergers have altered the structure of the industry, but it remained decidedly unstable at least through 1992.

The Controversialist - An Intellectual Life of Goldwin Smith (Hardcover, New): Paul Phillips The Controversialist - An Intellectual Life of Goldwin Smith (Hardcover, New)

Goldwin Smith (1823-1910) was a celebrated, transatlantic writer on current events, politics, religion, history, and literature. While he made his academic mark teaching at Oxford, Cornell, and later as a resident guru at Toronto, his facile pen earned him a far greater reputation with general readers throughout the English-speaking world. Determined to rouse concern over issues that he deemed to be important to the advancement of humanity, Smith was deemed the controversialist by the Dictionary of National Biography. A study of his life and his writings provides new insight into liberalism, anti-semitism, the role of the journalist, and other aspects of life in late 19th century North America and Britain.

As a public intellectual, Goldwin Smith spoke out on a variety of issues, frequently provoking intense debate. Phillips argues that the core of Smith's thought and the driving force behind his role as a controversialist lay in his moral philosophy, which provided a sense of direction to Smith's many and sometimes disparate writings and activities. This study will also probe the serious dilemma posed by Smith's path to agnosticism in the last decades of his life. By moving to a position of virtual unbelief, Smith risked damage not only to his carefully-crafted public persona, but also to a life's work as an impassioned moralist.

Slovenia's Transition - From Medieval Roots to the European Union (Hardcover): Bogomil Ferfila, Paul Phillips Slovenia's Transition - From Medieval Roots to the European Union (Hardcover)
Bogomil Ferfila, Paul Phillips
R3,183 Discovery Miles 31 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Slovenia's Transition: From Medieval Roots to the European Union details and analyzes the history of the process of Slovenia's transformation from a socialist, self managed, political-economic system to that of a capitalist, democratically regulated, market system. The book reveals the economic development of Slovenia as it transformed. Bogomil Ferfila explores the transformation of institutions through the development of corporatism. It also delves into the political and economic integration of Slovenia with the European Union. The book evaluates the 'gradualist' policy measures taken to transform the economy and the supporting economic transition of the post communist states. This successful transition led to its accession to the E.U. among the first tier of applicant countries. Followed by Slovenia becoming the first of the new members to assume the Presidency of the E.U. Through its careful historical analysis, this book illustrates the incredible changes that have taken place in Slovenia through politics, finances, and international relations.

A Clockwork Counterpoint - The Music and Literature of Anthony Burgess (Paperback): Paul Phillips A Clockwork Counterpoint - The Music and Literature of Anthony Burgess (Paperback)
Paul Phillips
R916 Discovery Miles 9 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A Clockwork Counterpoint is the first book to examine the musical side of Anthony Burgess, an astonishingly prolific, underrated and talented composer, revealing how his lifelong involvement in music is an essential key toward understanding his life and work. Whether explaining the sonata form structure of A Clockwork Orange and the musical underpinnings of dozens of his other novels, his distinctive views on the interrelationship between music and literature, music's role in his ties to his father and wives, or what his compositions tell us about his troubled relationship with his son, A Clockwork Counterpoint illuminates Burgess's dual creative life, providing the first complete portrait of a prodigious artist whose musical accomplishments have remained largely unknown until now. -- .

Orange Groves (Paperback): Paul Phillip Peters Orange Groves (Paperback)
Paul Phillip Peters
R379 Discovery Miles 3 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

We all have secrets, every one of us. Some secrets are so precious we dare not lay them aside even for a moment, holding onto them tightly wherever we go, like the sound of trailing footsteps, as close as your own shadow. Then there are those secrets that forever haunt a place, intertwined with the soil, water, and buildings, and sometimes, even a few wild orange groves. Fleeing from such places is pointless; there is no escape- not really. Traditions are a sacred, sometimes too sacred, way of life in the South, invoked to purify or shroud all manner of sin. The murky waters of history surge with deep-rooted families and prominent citizens as if a part a great river, with currents, eddies, and backwashes. The sleepy town of Bedlam, located in rural Harrison County, Florida, is a place of such secrets. On the outskirts of town towers a high school. For three quarters of a century, it stood as a threshold of the wild orange groves beyond; but its days were numbered. After a politician's death and a notable act of God, the closing of Orange Groves High School becomes the harbinger of things best left undisturbed. For those that sit in the classrooms, or walk the halls, from teacher to student alike, it's not a time that would be easily forgotten. When the indulgences of the past catch up with the indulgences of the present, there comes a reckoning. Sometimes the past is only a few feet under the surface.

1 Out Of 10 Therapists - The Poetry of Romanovsky & Phillips Lyrics (Paperback): Paul Phillips, Ron Romanovsky 1 Out Of 10 Therapists - The Poetry of Romanovsky & Phillips Lyrics (Paperback)
Paul Phillips, Ron Romanovsky
R251 Discovery Miles 2 510 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Pioneers of the gay folk music scene, Ron Romanovsky & Paul Phillips began their career at San Francisco's Valencia Rose Cafe as the musical break for Gay Comedy Open Mic Night. Over the next two decades they toured across the nation as well as abroad and released a number of albums which are available again at their Official Web-site.

The title of this volume comes from their Official Tour t-shirts sold at concerts in community centers, auditoriums and church halls across North America. The text ("1 out of 10 therapists recommend Romanovsky & Phillips to their patients who listen to music") and teal, purple & orange colors reflected the spirit of hope and fun that R&P brought to their concerts. The volume includes 44 selections from 1977 to 2007.

""Romanovsky and Phillips came flying across the gender spectrum in brave form. Queer, feminist, outrageous, funny, tender. Congratulations on 30 years of daring work.""
